Maybe Activision is FINALLY learning that fighting dedicated fans tooth and nail doesn't help them one bit.

Overall cool of them yes, but, it's not all them being cool. His site will be free advertisement.

Kotick kept his mouth shut? This is good, maybe Activision can have less than abysmal PR now.

While I'm in the camp of Bobby Kotick being a smug asshole that has limited business sense, this move is hardly surprising and is too small for Kotick to have his hand in it.
Really? What's it like blindly hating disliking someone you can't even admit to what they're good at. Bobby Kotick = Bad PR man. Bobby Kotick = Good Businessman. He's grown Activision into the largest publisher in the industry. Wasn't long that EA was the boogyman.

A guy like Kotick knows about everything going on in EA in some capacity. He enjoys it. What this has done though is created a buzz about the site and Sierra adventure games. So rather than cut off that venue for advertisement they've said you can give people a taste of the first game in a series but if they want more they gotta pay.

The first hit is always free.

And i know you said something to the same effect in your last paragraph, just trying to explain that I doubt Kotick has no knowledge about this move.

Wonder how many of the people who came in the last thread and spouted the almost reflexive line of "**** Activision" will come in here and talk about how...ya know...they were wrong then and they're even more so now.

Good for them though. Glad to see we had a happy endin to all of this. Well...a happier endin considerin the C&D apparently was a happy endin for Kool anyway.

So much for Big Bad Activision, eh?
Its a nice PR move, however I doubt this will make people change their minds. Activision will have to do quite a bit more if they want to change the minds of everyone.

I feel a new slogan is in the works.
Activision: Not completely evil.

Hahahah, that would be beyond awesome.

OT: Well who knew? A company jumping on an opportunity to earn more cash on someone elses fan base building...how unheard of.

I guess we both agree that this isn't (obviously) Kotick involved, Activision is successful, and that this was purely a smart business move (not a case of warm fuzzies). The only thing I disagree with is the success of Activision being due to Kotick's business practices. The key of their success is Blizzard and fanboys aka great marketing with certain franchises (you know which one I'm talking about). Kotick does silly things that spurns a lot of potential customers and Activision could be much more successful. Squeezing every cent out of your fans is a good way to make chump change but the real goal for higher success is to make new fans which he isn't too concerned with.

Nice one Activision. I'm guessing you can't play Gabriel Knight on that site, right?

Otherwise I'll probably pass checking it out.

Activision's Magnanimus is growing (They may have had ulterior motives, but they've done good things.)

... God I've been playing too much Echo Bazaar.

Did you even know how they became the largest publisher?
They merge with the second largest Publisher (at that time)...
The deal was Blizzard merges with Activision, and Kotick become the COE and Vivendi (owner of Blizzard) own the whole company.

You see at that time Blizzard was almost already as big as EA (due to WoW being a big success), Activision was something like 5th place at that time.

Kotick doesn't even know some basic business, for example: leader loss, He repeatedly said he will charge some game more if he is the person to set the price.

If you want more reason why he is unfitted for a CEO see:

Wow, freaking cool. Activision has been making a lot of strides in the last year or two to really work with people interested in doing these sorts of things rather than against them. It's great that they are able to look at Sarien.net as a community project and portal to increasing their sales rather than just writing it off and threatening to sue them if they ever talk about it again.

Trying to be cooperate with their fans rather then be a bad guy to them, I hope it works out for them and we see more openess like this in the future.
