The town feeds off of characters’ trauma and guilt. The more they have, the more fucked up their stay is. The little girl is fine because she’s too young and innocent for it to affect her. The other thing about James’s apparent indifference to it all is it’s kinda like a bad drug trip for an addict. To anyone else it should be obviously something to avoid, but in his mind it’s just more business as usual due to his already broken psyche, so very little is externalized to the player.

Finished Brookhaven Hospital (Otherworld) and got up to the prison. Definitely wasn't expecting Maria to die right in front of James, and that's definitely where what you guys have been saying about his muted reactions is in pretty clear focus. Based on my read of James's character, it'd be weird for him to suddenly cry or yell about it; seeing him just collapse is a lot more in-character. I also managed to dodge that particular spoiler until now, so, yay me I guess.

Also, I kinda mentioned it before, but there's something seriously wrong with Eddie. He's gone from crying in the bathroom to eating popcorn and watching a movie a blank screen, to making off-color jokes that feel like he's trying to hide how fucked he is behind 'I was joking'. Having him wandering around on his own is... well, if the game had a habit of side characters appearing outside of cutscenes, I'd be a lot more worried about him jump-scaring me.

Finished the prison and the boss fight immediately afterwards, and gained a bit of insight into Angela's previous interactions with James. His inability to keep his foot out of his mouth definitely hasn't been helping him at all, though it's easy to sympathize with him because we've been following him around so much. As for Angela... I don't feel like I should say anything. I don't know anything about that kind of situation; I don't even consume a lot of fictional media where it comes up.

What she said about Mary, though, reads to me less like she knows anything firsthand and more like she's just lashing out at James. Could be either way, but that's where I'm leaning. And I'm not saying that to put any kind of blame or aspersions on Angela, it's just an observation.

Decided to just finish the rest of the game, since I felt like I was pretty close. It was a couple of play sessions, still, but I got it done. Got the Leave ending; I feel like that's pretty normal, though I didn't notice anything that might have influenced it. I'll probably look up the ending triggers for my next run, that being the case.

This is just the opinion of someone who never the original, but this game is amazing. And I can't think of another game in this generation or the last that's quite like it. If it had to be called 'Silent Hill 2' to get released, I think I can live with that, especially if this team's next game is this good too. I'm probably not going to play it again for a while, though. I'm not ready to go through that again.

I have no idea what the deal with the Labyrinth is, but I think I get Lakeview Hotel at least.
