Will Wright has been milking the Sims franchise for all it is worth. The Sims was a monumental step up in the customization process from the earlier SimCities, and The Sims 2 was more of the same, with full 3D and better graphics. With reportedly over 3,600 traits for your Sims and thousands of objects and construction tools to customize, will the Sims 3 be the best yet? Or will it shit the bed if customization goes too far?

You know, Will Wright left the project a long time ago. Long before Sims 3, to work on Spore.
He, Maxis, and possibly half of the world now belong to EA, so it's EA that's screwing over the series, in my opinion.
From what I've heard on some Sims forums, Sims 3 will be awful for me and my Sims-addicted sister. You may be able to go around town, but
other people will grow up without your control, and possibly choose their own life paths. This sounds good, but that means players with multiple families will have the game play itself half the time, as their 5 other families are CPU controlled. Not to mention that you can't place your own lots, and in fact, they will move around without your help whatsoever! This sounds like it's taking away
useful customization, i.e., putting houses, making legacies. This I don't like, since I like the ability to make albums of stories completely under my control, not having lots and people change willy-nilly.
Also, Wants and Fears will be replaced. I liked that system, I thought it was simple enough, but apparently, Rod Humble, the leader of the Sims development is getting rid of this system, stating that:
Humble adds that few players even care about -- or notice -- their Sims' Fears. When Fears triggered, players would often wonder if the bad thing that just happened was a bug.
This is just sad because
they explain wants and fears in the GAME MANUAL. When I saw that my Sims feared fire, I try my best to keep a fire from happening. If they are in the house when a fire occurs, or they're house is burned down, they lose aspiration. This makes sense, and seems fair enough as a life simulation to me. If my house burned down, I wouldn't have too much 'get up and go' either.
Now they have a system of Dreams and Promies, which seem dumb to me. Dreams replacing Lifetime wants, and Promises replacing wants. This seems to provide a customizable want list, but still with a Lifetime want chosen by the game. As much as I wanted to complain, this doesn't seem all bad thus far.
"Learning from that, we have a system in Sims 3 called Dreams and Promises," says Brown, "which are a lot more nurturing -- and a lot more contextual. Your Sim might walk past a cute Sim on the street and think, 'I'd like to get to know her better.' And you can Promise that you're going to make that happen. You can basically 'sign up' for that." Anything can trigger a Dream at any time, and a new Dream is represented by a thought balloon over your Sim's portrait. Buy your child a telescope and he may Dream of being an astronaut after a few nights of stargazing. Promise to make his Dream come true -- even if you can't until the day before he dies -- and he'll gain a significant mood boost. A Dream might also be as simple as wanting to buy a book -- inspired by walking past the bookstore downtown, learning how to cook, or simply sitting idly on the couch with nothing better to do.
Not to mention the moodlets the OP was referring to I think. That's the another thing I can approve of, since it resembles the 'buffing' I see in RPG's, excetp that instead of casting Shell to keep from dying of Flare attacks, you hit Brush Teeth to get Minty Fresh Breath. It sounds like this means by doing some simple actions, you can make your day to day life interesting. Otherwise, I can't see the reason to brush you teeth in the Sims at all when you can raise Hygiene by taking a bath.
Also, your personality is no longer 'Neat 9' or 'Nice 0'. You have individual values now that sometimes oppose each other. That is say Good/Evil, Social/Reclusive, from what I gleaned in the article. You can even choose how you get ahead in jobs, with Work Tones.
I really wanted to complain about it, but all in all, this game only gets two major gripes from me.It seems to play alike to an RPG, which I really tend to like. So all I need are some custom FF and Xenosaga skins, and I'll be a very happy Sim fan.
....Even if I won't be able to afford the game for years, not to mention the fancy schmancy rig you need to run it.
BY THE WAY. If you wanted to read more about the Sims 3 and changes, this is the source site.
