Skullgirls Dev Dismisses Cries of Sexism

I don't get what the big deal is. The video I saw had nothing sexual in it at all. The clothing is very tame for the average fighting game women, and the attacks weren't remotely sexual in nature. Unless all the other characters are super whores and this video just showcased the exception, those sexist accusations are pretty stupid.

Personally I think this game just looks fun and a little bit silly. I didn't notice any panties, and whilethough I was totally looking for them, I got distracted by her head nomnoming the crap of the other character.

Sexist? Meh, probably not, though the "A woman animated this!" argument doesn't really do him any favours.

Cheap and easy gimmick to help it sell better? Almost certainly. DOA basically built its entire franchise off of this. It's not anything new, especially for the beat 'em up genre.

Nothing I've seen has shown me that this is particularly worth a purchase though. I'll stick to BlazBlue [sub]which has at least one bouncing breast character, for the record[/sub].

Really, people crying sexism every time they see attractive, scantily clad women in a game, book, movie or whatever, need to have their platform yanked. The problem is that the media keeps giving a platform to garbage like this, so whenever someone wants 15 minutes of fame they jump on it and make a stink.

As I've been saying for decades now, what men and women find attractive and appealing overlaps heavily. You ARE dealing with idealized physical images and that is universal for both genders, just as the way men are portrayed in fantasy as having crazy amounts of muscle definition and so on.

It's sort of like someone looking at a piece of fantasy artwork, insulting it as sexist and demeaning to women, and then finding out it's by Julie Bell or another female fantasy artist. A total joke. This is just the video game version, I believe similar things have happened with some of the Anime/Manga produced by Clamp over the years as well. :)

The biggest issue I have with this article is that there is an article... assuming it's a real issue, as opposed to some offhanded promotion, with the developer itself claiming the contreversy to get attention, I had never heard of "Skullgirls" before this for example. In such a case I think it lacks class, but I suppose The Escapist has to pay it's bills and it's no worse than running any other advertising.

That is because those guys think that if they will act all pro-feministic, then they will get a few chances to get laid. That is all IMHO, of course.
If that's the case, it'd be nice if they actually went after blatantly sexist things in games, instead of just sexual women. There's plenty of it, after all. When there are still games coming out where "female" isn't even something represented in the game world alongside "male", seems super silly to get bent out of shape about an attractive woman being sexist somehow.

After watching that video of the gameplay, I don't even understand why this title is getting singled out by anyone. Your typical fighting game, as alluded to in the article, has bustier, more scantily clad women.

I actually don't like the cartoony-style art in this one bit. This isn't really anime-like art. It's more like 50s cartoons with anime aesthetic. (bouncy boobs, panty flashes, crazy attacks)

Oh and there's tons of fighters like this already out there, I think the issue here is that the makers actually are not Japanese so more people feel comfortable to confront them.

Here's something that's actually anime-like and doesn't give me the feeling of a second-hand imitation:

I would have forgiven the Skullgirls developer if he'd punched the guy out before politely explaining to the now twitching body on the ground why he was a moron and that he should go away.

It's the exact same thing about the judges who bans albums with naked babies in them. They find it sexy, stirring up their emotions so they know it's wrong in the outside world (but secretly it turns them on), while a normal sane person will just see a baby, naked, and that's that, completely natural, without any further emotions around the subject.
Not child pornography, just an adorable photo.

For me to explain why it's not sexist would require me to find a way for someone to mistake this for being sexist.

Why do people keep adding letters to the front of RPG? Does anyone realize the separation is what causes fanboys and idiots?
Nothing happened when people used Srpg to describe things like disgaea or final fantasy tactics though.

I think it's not that letters are added, it's that people who aren't into RPGs started calling those rpgs with anime-like themes and cool epic linear stories Jrpgs, to which the others replied by calling those actiony open world choice-making rpgs Wrpgs and now years later here we are.

The defense that a woman animated it may not be great, but the truth is people get way too wound up about this sort of sh*t. Let's actually think about the though process of the female animator; is it not entirely possible that in the same way male artists in both the video game and comic book industry represent their respective sex, she is simply presenting an idealised version of her gender? Simply a proposition. I won't be buying game, probably won't ever hear about it again, but I just think that this sort of reaction, that's become increasingly common I may add, is growing tiresome.

... Christ, I just realised the way I phrased that makes me sound like such a ponce.

You know, just like how it's not racist if a black person says that all blacks are lazy or if a white person says all whites are boring. OH WAIT YEAH TI'S STILL RACIST.

I can side with him. This isn't sexism, it may be a very sexualised version of women but it's hardly sexism. There's the stigma in society that women have to be kept pristine and in no way sexual by men or they're being misogynist pigs. It is shallow chivalry and people looking to cause a fuss over nothing and it's rather pathetic.

Let them continue to sexualise women, let them continue to sexualise men; who actually gives a fuck? It's hardly denying them any civil rights, we're still equal in spite of it.

Basically, grow the fuck up and stop trying to be a knight in shining white armour.

Am I the only one who think that the fight animation is so fast pace that you can't really see the panty shots? (Unless you're the type who pause the video just to get a glimspe.)
Ok I can see the big breast and skimpy dress on some of the characters (look up the character Valentine) but the overall presentation from the trailers just show these girls are a force to be wreaken with.

"We don't have anyone like [Street Fighter's] Cammy, who wraps her legs around your leg then beats you senseless with her Kegel muscles - or whatever is going on in that Cammy Super."
Now, I am no Street Fighter expert, but I was unaware that in one game Cammy actually stuck the opposing player bodily into her vagina. Or, alternately, that she had a penis. Because those pelvic floor muscles don't really move anything but assorted bits down there.

Skullgirls doesn't really bug me, but this jerkass talking about it bugs the hell out of me.

No, that's true, people just take screencaps and shout murder. It's a 60FPS game, you may get a shot for like, one twelfth of a second or something. If you're actually playing the game you'll be looking at your foe's moves so you'll be able to block anyways, not at the anatomy of your own char, so it's again moot.
