Skyrim and Killable Children

Ok, so I know I'm a little late to the party, but I got Skyrim recently and just wanted to weigh in on the killable children mods.

I think the moral issues should be considered, and it is exactly FOR the morals that I think children SHOULD be killable. Sure, you'll have your wave of people playing a super evil bastards who wipe out entire towns (and with the killing kids mod, ENTIRE towns), which is fine, because that's the character they're role-playing as.

But the morally outraged out there seem to think that this the only reason that people would want a killing kids mod installed. You want to know why *I* want a killing kids mod installed?

To add some realistic accountability.

Imagine, if you will, a scenario where a dragon attacks Riverwood (Still early game for me, so this is the only town I know of that doesn't exit the main world). You're all like, "Heck yeah! Kill that sucka!' You're firing off massive lightning spells like a boss, and take that ugly lizard down.
After the chaos has died down, you realise that some stray fire from your spells has hit, and killed, the blacksmith's daughter. You know it was you, because it was a fire-breathing dragon, and she has clearly died from lightning-related injuries.

Oh god....what have I done? I should have been more careful! I was trying to protect the town, and now look what I've done...

As I'm playing a fairly righteous character at the moment, THAT would be my reaction. The reaction, I'm sure, that most heroes in Skyrim, or anywhere.

Or perhaps, you didn't kill the dragon quickly enough, and the dragon ate her. There's a multitude of reasons that would have the same emotional reaction.
Maybe the town would be in mourning thereafter for a full in-game year, with the townspeople wearing only black and generally being sad. Perhaps the game would then place a small memorial shrine within the blacksmith's house, and every time you spoke to the blacksmith, or entered his home, you'd be reminded either of what you'd done, or what you failed to do. Which would add another beautiful layer to an already incredibly deep game.

Accidents happen, and THAT'S why the morally outraged should chill out, or better yet, have killable children as a vanilla feature. To NOT kill children.

I know that this topic is probably overdone, and I'm probably not making a point that hasn't already been made, so feel free to let this thread die. I just wanted to have my say, and share some thoughts.

TL;DR? Not all of us want killable children to be evil psychopaths. Now go read it, lazy. :)

Yeah, I don't really think people want this mod just so they can kill kids. They just want them to be able to die.

Why didn't they just call the mod something like "mortal children"? Well, because nobody on the internet seems to have any tact. Not a god damn one.

There was a thread about this over on Gamefaqs, in which an engineer in the military discussed how morally "wrong" the idea of killing children is for the sake of realism. It turned into a heated debate, and got ugly.

While I don't care either way, the scenario you mentioned felt more like a movie then an actual game. Don't get me wrong, TES is incredibly immersive, but I just couldn't see me freaking out because I killed some A.I's daughter.

I killed children once... and then I took an arrow to the knee.

Sorry, couldn't help it. xD

Anyways, I agree with Irridium. The fact that people want children to die isn't because they want to kill them. It simply breaks the immersion. And while Yahtzee had good points in his article on the topic, I just think it's a little ridiculous that I can massacre every citizen of Whiterun while the children just run around playing tag on their bodies. Just sayin'.

Exactly. I have no interest in killing children. I have no interest in killing ANY town folks. But I still have child death mod. So that if something happens to a town there aren't just a bunch of creepy, annoying, children wandering around an otherwise decimated town.

I've said it before on another thread but i'll say it again. I don't really want/need/desire to kill kids, I just want the ability to smack those twats who make fun of me ALL the time. Especially that brat from Dragonsreach.

OT: Yes killable kids do add to gameplay. I like OP reasoning, in fact I'm more mindful of my spells when i have a follower around. Hint: Never conjure a flame antourach in small spaces.

Consider this.

You go into a town and kill all of the adults, take all of their cheese and meat and then leave. Now the children have no providers or care takers (and probably buckets on their heads). Every night their dreams will be filled with the images of you murdering their family and having your way with their cattle. Every day for them will be a sad and miserable hell on earth while they slowly starve to death, possibly even taking their own lives.

Not killing the children is probably less cruel because it's quick and painless. I mean otherwise they're left to relive the death of their parents every time they close their eyes.

I think it's that old tried and true, bittersweet thought that so long as you don't pull the trigger you're not killing them or that because the children die off camera it's out of sight out of mind. It's like if you play as a pacifist but you use soul gems to recharge your staff of calming. YOU didn't kill the animals in the soul gems but the more you buy them the more there is a need to restock the soul gem inventory which means that some where out there things are being killed to feed your demand for more calming spells.

It actually DOES portray a moral quandary because it asks at what point does your responsibility end and are the events that you set into motion no longer your fault? Even if you only take partial blame don't you still have a part to play in the entire issue? After all, it's not the kid's fault they're too emotionally scared to find help or food, is it?

Besides Mayor Maccready wants to die, I mean why else would he be such an abrasive ass hat to a guy pointing a tri-beam laser rifle at him? NOT killing him would be cruel and insensitive.

He's also a bit of a hypocrite because he moaned about not being able to kill children in his fable 2 review.

And yeah, i agree the reason people want children to not be invincible is because it breaks immersion, they dont WANT them to die, they just dont want them to be invincible.. its the same as why alot of people moan about adults who are marked as essential and cant be killed...

People are outraged because it trivialises child death... but whats more trivialising than seeing someones face get melted off by a dragon and then they do not die? If the stupid people who believe that gaming causes violence because you can just 'hit the reset button and everything will be alright with no consequences' ... how bad must shooting 50 arrows into someones face without even needed to reload the save be?... The people who have the children are able to die mod WANT consequences, not to advocate killing children.
