I'm not sure if this goes here or in Advice, but whatever. I'm committed now.

So, I decided it would be nice to do another playthrough of Skyrim. I play for a while, everything's fine, then hop on the boat to Solstheim to find this Miraak punk. I get there, I go to the Earthstone, everyone's brainwashed and building a shrine... except they don't sound like it. Instead of doing the creepy chant, they talk like normal. I can even start conversations with them. I think, "oh well, that sucks," and move on. I move on to Miraak's temple, nothing seems out of place, reach the Black Book, pick it up for my first conversation with Miraak...

And nothing.

He doesn't talk to me. He doesn't even acknowledge me. He just stands there with his back to me. I even used a console command to get out of cutscene mode to go up to him and he didn't even have ambient conversation pieces. Just silence.

Eventually I used console commands to skip that part of the quest, have a chat with Frea and follow her as she goes to her village and... climbs into bed. She also has no dialogue whatsoever, and I can't talk to the old shaman at all either.

So, the whole questline is fucked. Nothing I've done has worked and I've only found one other person online who's had this glitch, and no one helped them, so I figured I might as well come here and see if anyone could help me.

For the record, the things I have tried are:

* Disabling individual mods.
* Disabling all mods.
* Deleting all mods.
* Deleting and reinstalling everything except my save files.
* Starting again from a save before I entered Solstheim.
* Deleting all mods and starting again from a save before I entered Solstheim.

So... anyone?

It might be something your mods left in even after you disabled them. Im mnot super familiar but they can leave code in your saves yeah? Maybe try a new character and cheat using console commands so you can go to solstheim straight away and see if this keeps happening for more experiments. Maybe you could just use console commands to build a character roughly the same as your current one and go from there. Get all your items with the testing hall, yada yada. Not ideal but might be the quickest way.

And maybe check up on user comments about any of your newest mods that nobody else has the same problems.

Its hard to say given that you seem to have gone through all the main solutions so far. Had you uninstalled any mods prior to starting dragonborn content? Some Orphan scripts may be causing you trouble. Then again the Dragonborn questline was pretty notorious for breaking in more than one place so short of having being up to date Skyrim and unofficial patch there may not be much you can do.

If you can rule out any mod specific issues especially the one you have relating to Dragonborn, there may not be much you can do. Sadly the save you have might just be fucked.

I'd make a test character as Fieldy409 suggested both with and without mods to see if its a mod or perhaps something is wrong with your base Skyrim or Dragonborn. Just make sure to use setstage rather than completequest when skipping ahead.

As others have said, the glitch might be 'baked' into your save file. In which case, there's not much you can do.

You can see if it's a problem with your game, or with your save specifically, fairly easily.
From the game's main menu, DON'T load your save, instead bring up the command console and type in:

coc DLC2RavenRock01

And you'll spawn with the default male Nord character somewhere around Raven Rock. Then just follow the quest normally (you'll have an empty journal at first, but you should just be able to retrace your initial steps if you're familiar with how the quest plays out).
You might need to god-mode your way through to speed things up a bit, as you spawn at level 1 with only a basic set of equipment.

Go to the Skyrim Nexus and install the unofficial patches for Skyrim and the various DLCs, they do a lot of good. Maybe it will help. Also I think there is an item that conceals your identity or something? Heard about it. Make sure you don't have that.I've read there are issues with an older version of an Animation mod that can cause things like this. Not sure if you ever used that. There are also some console commands for resetting NPCs.

Posting in the Nexus Skyrim forums would probably be your best bet.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. :) I deleted several mods (and eventually, all of them) and started several fresh characters, with a few different approaches. All of them had the same problem. So, it looks like the problem is with the game; or rather, with the game files on my computer. The only thing I can think of doing now is uninstalling, deleting my saves, and manually searching my computer for any leftover files that may be sticking around after the uninstall.

Or I could say fuck it and reinstall Oblivion. It's tempting.

I've been running the unofficial patches, so that's not it. I haven't tried the Nexus forums, though; I should probably try that.
