Sleeping Dogs Walkthrough Takes Cues From John Woo

United Front Games' upcoming open world crime game has a few new tricks up its sleeve.

Open world crime games are nothing new - hell, GTA alone has been going for fourteen years now - so to stand out from the crowd you have to deliver something special. Developer United Front Games is pinning its hopes on Hong Kong action reminiscent of John Woo's gun fu, and the walkthrough trailer released today, Mrs Chu's Revenge, shows off its unique touches. If you've ever wanted to leap from car to car mid-chase, or slam your opponent's head in a car door for a bone-crunching hand to hand takedown, this could be the game you're looking for.

"Welcome to Hong Kong," the game's website proclaims, "a vibrant neon city teaming with life, whose exotic locations and busy streets hide one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world: the Triads." Your character is Wei Shen, an undercover cop trying to penetrate the organization - another heroic bloodshed trope beloved of Hong Kong cinema - and in the walkthrough mission, you're helping a poor old lady track down the goon who killed her beloved [mumble mumble]. Poor old lady? Yeeesh ...

The driving and goon-tracking work more or less the same way as in other action games, but the combat - particularly the hand-to-hand combat - is pretty fun to watch, and there are plenty of overblown action touches, as with the aforementioned mid-chase jump from motorcycle to car. It reminded me slightly more of some of Woo's scenes can be. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_To]

Sleeping Dogs is the title Activision abandoned and Square Enix, not believing its luck, snapped up [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117473-Square-Enix-Activision-Was-Crazy-To-Drop-Sleeping-Dogs]. It was originally part of the True Crime series, but Square Enix only had rights to the game, not the name. Sleeping Dogs is due out for Xbox, PS3 and PC in August 2012.

Funny thing, I saw a Q/A session at MCM expo about this game in May and one of the designers said that the project was actually unrelated to True Crime originally. Thinking it would sell better, Activision had it changed to True Crime before they dropped it, and Square Enix picked it up and the name Sleeping Dogs was made. I think the original name was something to do with flowers and the colour purple, I can't quite remember.

Also, this game looks really great. I really hope it doesn't suck, as when I saw a live demo of it at MCM and played a bit, it was great but rough around the edges. Framerate dropped at times and I saw a lady surfing on her Motorbike. But the combat? Damn satisfying, especially when using the environment.

Calumon: That video wasn't about sleeping dogs! That wasn't about dogs at all!

I find it tough to believe it didn't start out as a True Crime game. It has the slo-mo, and has a reference to the Gulag from Streets of LA. Shame it doesn't have the good cop/bad cop system, though.

I can't help but notice it looks a bit...unfinished. Character animations are rough, the car noises sound plastic-y, and the driving physics look bad to me. I suppose, so long as it has the same kind of ridiculous twists, upgrade system, and great sense of humour the True Crime series had, it'll be just as good.

It's true, it was an original IP. I actually decided to look it up and it was originally called Black Lotus (Purple's a dark colour, made me think of it). It was called and green lit as that but Activision put the True Crime label on the game to help it sell later on. Considering development apparently started in 2008 and the game was announced as True Crime in 2009, it happened early. Changing the franchise of the game late in development would have been a bad idea.

A source, if you want.

I wouldn't also put your hopes up for this being True Crime, not too much. By the looks of things, they were making their own game, but Activision just wanted the label on it to help it sell.

Calumon: It's not about flowers either! D:

As a gamer from Hong Kong, I've been setting my sights on this game since it was announced two years ago. I nearly wanted to kill Bobby Kotick after he decided to can it 2 months before its original Activision release date, but I was hyped again after Square Enix took it up.

No, it's not the best game in the world but it's a freaking open-world game set in my own hometown with driving and combat mechanics better than GTA IV. The fact that it's a free roaming game that DOESN'T take place in Los Angeles, New York or London (or an expy of those cities) is great enough, but it's exciting for me to have your own city featured in a GTA-style game for the very first time.

The only downside is that I have to complete the whole game before leaving for college six days after the release date.

I really don't get the hate everyone loves to throw at the driving mechanics. Are people really expecting GTA4 driving mechanics? I keep having to remind people that GTA4 had THE WORST driving mechanics of any open-world game ever. It was literal PHYSICAL PAIN that resulted from trying to drive around in Liberty City.
