Smash Ultimate: ...Ok, I'm starting to get into it.

Read, I didn't say "get it". Because Holy Shit, is this vastly different than any fighter I have ever played.

It hands down needs more precision than any other fighting game I've played. There aren't the same type of combos in other fighters, but simply lining up a proper strike towards your opponent takes accuracy that will not be seen in other fighters. I just came back from Florida, and during down time, I was unlocking characters.

I'm maining Cloud/Ryu for now. I just got my last unlock, so I'm going to go through the rest of the roster and see what fits me.

I'm enjoying myself. But I really do not think I'll be ready for a real player for a while.

Weird question, though. This game modes fostering a Turtling style, and I don't get it. How come there isn't a mode where you need to be the first to hit a number of stocks to win? Like the first player to get 5 stocks wins? I've been sitting back and letting the CPUs beat on each other. It promotes such a lame fighting style.

I get it, pride and all. But winning is more important. Why not have a mode that actually rewards the best K.O.er in the game? I've lost matches where I had 23 K.O.s and the next closest was 8. I just self destructed too much. Again, not being precise with Cloud's Up+Special. Double tapping and all.

And if there's a way to make that a custom mode or I just haven't seen that mode, please enlighten me. I think that's the only curiosity preventing it from being a Ten out of Ten for me.

I'm not sure where the setting is cause the last one I played was 4 but there deinitely is a mode where each player has 3 stocks (lives) and the one who stays alive last wins. You can prolly alter the stock up to 9 but 3 is tourney standard I believe. Just look through all the options modes and whatnot and I'm sure you'll find it.

Yes - that definitely exists. I think that playing with a timer is lame; I exclusively play with stocks whenever I get the chance to play with my friend on his Switch.

However, looks like the OP is referring to a mode where you win by getting x amount of kills. I'd think that that is in the game, but I'm not certain. Traditional stock mode is more about the last man standing.

Yeah, this.

With K.O.'s really not mattering in a direct facet, as in you need a certain number of K.O.s to be the winner... I'm just staying out of engagements and peppering the melee with my projectiles. I just need to be the last one, so it feels like I don't need to fight. I just need to run. That isn't a great way to set up your fighting game.

But of course this is mainly a big problem in Team battles. In 1 v 1 you must fight. But the biggest allure to people like me who play traditional fighters is the whole fighting a big group deal.

Smash is it's own genre of platform fighter. There's just a whole other host of fundamentals that go into playing it, ones totally alien to other sorts of fighters. If you go it trying to do blazblue things you won't find much to it though, for sure.

It's prolly harder for someone with an established notion of what to expect in a fighter at first but I'm sure if you can manage other stuff you can manage this too. I just don't have much deeper insight cause my only exposure to the competitive side is when people play it during my airdasher locals and I observe. A whole lot goes into dashing and dodging and air mobility, much less than in the attack buttons.

That's my exact problem with Smash since the start, same with battle royale games. Both Smash and BR games, you can avoid fighting and do well. Good multiplayer games will have some sort of objective that forces you to come out and fight or you simply just lose the game. Basically, campers must be punished or nothing stops them from camping. With shooters it's easier to have objectives, I guess Smash could have some sorta area control mechanic to it or something to punish those that just jump around. It's the reason Smash has never been more than a party game to me because playing to win is lame instead of fun. My friend's pre-teen daughter has pissed us all off playing the new Smash because she wins just by not fighting.

And this is the issue. I don't need to be the best Smasher, I need to be the Best Dasher. That's why I'm frankly surprised there isn't a K.O. tally mode. I would likely feel like I should be pissed at your Friend's Daughter, but she's doing it right. She sees what to do to win, and she's doing it. It's like being mad at those players in Halo who made a mad dash to the Rocket Launcher and Sniper every round. Those are the tools to win. They get it. It feels 'cheap', but the game is played to win.

This is why I am starting to Get the game, but not get it. The mechanics other than this large one are sound. Every character does feel different. I am using Ryu almost like I would use him in Street Fighter. That's an Amazing Feat. But the thrill of being the best doesn't happen when to be the best, you just need to stay out of the way and let everyone else deal with it.

I don't really hate her as it's 'hate the game, not the player' and all. I just don't feel Smash is a sound game because of the core issue with surviving being the way you win instead of fighting. Playing to win should be skillful and fun. At least in Halo and other shooter with power weapons like that, it was a fight over that area of the map and it's kinda your fault for just letting other players take that stuff without anyone contesting them. Though, I was never a fan of those type of games with power weapons laying around, I prefer taking map positions because of their strategic value vs cuz there's an RPG there.

Ehm, are you playing four player mode? That's fine, but that always did feel like chaotic party game mode (especially with the items). If you want to get into it more, I recommend playing 1v1, no items, small simple maps. I know some people mock it as being boring, but its the way the game can remain engaging after the novelty of smashing pikachu into snake and the joy of chaos wears off. People still play kind of campy in 1v1, but if you pick a character with decent air mobility like for example yoshi, you can play as aggresive as you like.

There is a mode that has you play on time and has the winner win by absolute KD ratio, which I recommend for various reason over stock mode unless you are playing 1v1. But a mode that just rewarded kills would be insanely unbalanced because of characters like Bowser and Ganondorf who have kamikaze moves and janky forward smash kills, with other characters focusing on damage output over time or not trading.

The CPU AI isn't set up to go after campers.

Rest assured, any half decent human players aren't going to let somebody sit aside and camp the whole match. That's just inviting everybody to gang up on the camper.

If you want to practice characters, you 1v1 the CPU. If you want to play the game, you need other people to play with.
