Smell-O-Vision Possible Thanks to Science

A prototype device attached to your TV or cellphone can produce over 10,000 different scents. I can't wait to smell CSI!

If Smell-O-Vision sounds like a failed 1950s technology, that's because it is [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smell-O-Vision]. The ability to add the sense of smell to the sight and sound of a storyteller's palette might have been a breakthrough, but the system was plagued with problems and a hokey presentation. The idea has staying power, however, and a group of scientists at the University of California in San Diego, funded by Samsung, might have developed a device to make smell-o-vision a reality. The team believes that they've stumbled on a unique way to reproduce varying scents with a 100 x 100 grid of small pockets containing a solution with a particular odor. Wires heat these pockets, releasing the scents that mix in the air to form specfic odors. Imagine the marketing possibilities of such a device attached to your TV or phone.

"If people [in the show] are eating pizza, the viewer smells pizza coming from a TV or cell phone," said Sungho Jin, a professor on the team. "And if a beautiful lady walks by, they smell perfume. Instantaneously generated fragrances or odors would match the scene shown on a TV or cell phone, and that's the idea."

Not only that, but the device might be able to provide the scents of different perfumes. Jin tested the device with two commercial perfumes, "Live" by Jennifer Lopez, and "Passion" by Elizabeth Taylor. Each tester was able to identify the different fragrances at a distance up to 30 cm away from the device.

While the implications for such technology is pretty cheesy for TV or movies - I could see it as more viable in advertisements. Want to smell like this? Buy this perfume! Doesn't that burger smell good? Eat at Joes!

If used correctly, videogames might actually be the best application for Smell-o-vision. Imagine smelling the dust of the Earth in a gritty shooter, or the tang of ozone when the mage casts lightning bolt in the next RPG from Bethesda. Yeah, that could be pretty cool.

Had to be done:

I'm slightly concerned about which programmes they're going to connect it to though...I don't really want to smell dead bodies.

I don't think smelling the after effects of a Fireball on an enemy in Skyrim would be a pleasant experience.....

I saw this coming, or at least some form of it. Maybe this could be useful, or it could flop once one of the shows mentioned above me are on (Bones, CSI, etc...eugh, the body farm episode...). I'm kind of iffy on the video game applications, too, given games like Dead Space or anything featuring the undead.

Ahhh, imagine the applications!

Calumon: Wait, so if I watch me on the TV, I can smell myself? o_O

What could possibly go wrong? [/sarcasm]

Thanks for the link mentioning the past attempt at this, as it's the first thing that came to my mind. As for practicality, well... I can't see it being very valuable or helping with immersion. Imagine all the other scents that exist in a person's living room that this would have to mask. And how would these scents be gotten rid of once secreted? Also, if a guest decided to stop by while a particularly pungent scent was being used, imagine what would happen to the viewer's reputation.

Smell-o-vision in videogames?
With all the rotting corpses, zombies, sewer levels and junkyards?

It sounds silly in theory but many said the same about rumble in controllers. Who knows? Heaven help us if it's used with porn though.

But that would be awesome, imagine that in a game like Elder Scrolls (it doesnt really matter but go with it) you find a dungeon and it smells terrible, while you know that there might be something there you will think twice before going there. Your character may be strong enough to take care of the monsters but you will be fighting yourself to handle the smell. They could have some special items to protect you from those smells.

It would be cool to immerse yourself and I would like that they didnt abuse it to avoid making games unplayable(the case that I described would be good to abuse since it would repel the player from the dungeon until he had the item).

OT: Does it mean that I would have to buy the solutions to fill those pockets if it runs out? Also, does it run out? That is very important for what it is, it would be cool for games but for the TV it sucks.

It's funny how every time this idea is mentioned (I first came upon someone claiming this was just around the corner about 15 years ago), they go on about how they can mix any scent from a few different basic scents...

But as the link to wikipedia demonstrates, this is not a new idea. And... As noted from those early experiments, the real problem seems to be getting rid of odours afterward.

Because, if you create one smell, then create a second, you won't create the correct effect if the person is still smelling the first odour.

And notice what gets glossed over here?
They mention their ability to create unique smells, but don't give much thought to getting rid of existing smells so that they don't start to conflict with each-other.

In other words, the real problem is being ignored, while they continue to improve the 'quality' of these systems in a way that while impressive, is completely useless if you can't solve the more fundamental problem.

And I literally cannot think of a TV show, video game, porn movie, advertisement or...well, anything else I ever interact with on tv or computer that I want to smell. So, no. I would not buy this.

I don't know about you, but the game trying to put me off with a stench is the opposite of immersion, if you ask me.

Oh yes, indeed it did.

However, smellovision will be of no use to me. I CAN'T SMELL!
