I'm using a guide to get the neutral ending of Shin Megami Tensei IV, and, without giving any spoilers, the guide involves getting the first choice every time it gives me dialogue options. Does that also include choosing whether or not to have Burroughs give you tutorials in the beginning?

Tutorials have no such repercussions, nor do non philosophical questions on bosses (bosses will talk to you during battle and they will affect the battle depending on how you answer, but have no alignment value) Any questions asked on the field usually do, so always choose the first. Also, when you reach Ikebukuro, do not talk to a women who asks if you are a demon or a human, it heavily alters alignment, if you do, reload a save, she is behind shutters.

Pick the first response for questions whenever possible (except boss battles)
Do NOT talk to the woman behind the shutters in Ikebukuro (it will manipulate the alignment by too much)
In the "question corridor" in Tsukiji, go left for all the answers (the ones Walter approves of)
Go with Jonathan when the path first splits (go to Naraku to meet Jonathan)
Choose "destroy the status quo" when prompted to in the story (choosing to preserve will likely lock you into Law, which can be fun if you make a second save)
Personally, I say play and get what ending you get and just enjoy, but its up to you.
Some quests will alter your alignment, those quests are as follows:
"Slaying of the Dragon of the Lake"
"Hunter Tournament Prelims"
"Sunset for a Demonnapper"
"Banquet of Flames"
"Hunter Tournament Finals"
"Demon-Haunted Man"
So avoid those, do any of the others as you see fit. Make a second save file once you are prompted to go to Ichigaya and if choosing to destroy the status quo doesn't lock you in, try preserve and that might do the trick.
Gotcha, thanks. By the way, what's your views on the Digital Devil Saga duology? (I've been thinking of getting them off the PSN).
