What do you get when you mix a stolen priceless 86 carot diamond, a Jewish Jeweler who might not actually be Jewish, unscrupulous boxing promoters, Brad Pitt as a next-to-impossible to understand gypsy, a crimelord who feeds his victims to pigs, a Russian gangster, a tough as nails guy with bullets for two of his teeth, and a trio of bungling amateur robbers? If you guessed the plot of Snatch, you would be correct. Snatch basically entails the mad chase for said diamond that turns modern day London all upside down, quite hilariously if I might add. It also concerns the crazy adventures of Tommy and Turkish, two under-the-table fight promoters working for the crime boss Brick Top, and their rush to not get cut up and fed to pigs when the Gypsy Mickey knocks out Brick's prized fighter Gorgeous George.
This could be one of the simplest plots to a film I have ever seen. Yet, at the same time, it is one of the absolute craziest. I really can't think of any other way to describe it, it is loopy, zany chaos, but somehow everything in the film all melds together, and it all makes for a very fun ride. Usually a movie with this many characters and that has this much going on is just a recipe for disaster. Often, such a film will lose track of what is all going on and just end up getting tangled up in itself, resulting in a large mess. But Snatch not only doesn?t fail at this, it pulls it off beautifully, I and just have to give it points for doing something most movies wouldn't even dare try. Everything flows together smoothly, and all the different characters tie in very nicely.
The actors from top to bottom were great. Everyone seemed to really be into the minds of their respective characters. Whoever was Brad Pitt?s dialogue coach (assuming that there was one) did one hell of a job, because Pitt does an amazing job with whatever accent he is using. I thought I was going to need a translator to understand half his lines, which just made them that much better somehow. Jason Statham shows off more of a humorous side as the wise-cracking Turkish. Vinny Jones hits a home run as Bullet-tooth Tony, and Alan Ford as Brick Top is just the perfect villain for this scenario, snarky, sadistic, and just a real fun character. The trio of Vinny, Tyrone, and Sol were worth all kinds of laughs on their own, and had to be some of the most bungling crooks I have ever seen. I really got the impression that all of the actors really enjoyed making and being involved in Snatch. The cast was very solid.
To go along with a very well rounded cast, the writing was just stellar. Almost every line of dialogue is solid gold. I could probably fill almost an entire page with memorable and funny lines from this. I think Turkish and Avi really delivered some of the best lines though. Turkish is just a complete smart arse, and makes a witty retort to almost everything his partner Tommy says. Avi on the other hand, pretty much wears his disgust for England right on his sleeve. Though to his credit, Brick Top is a character who is funny as can be on screen, but would just be a terrifying individual in real life. Also, never trust anyone who owns a pig farm. You will probably be quoting lines from this movie months after you have seen it. It is just full of wit and clever humor that occasionally has a somewhat dark twist to it. Easily one of the funniest films I have seen in years.
Also, I thought that the cinematographer, Tim Maurice-Jones did a very good job filming. This was especially so during the various boxing scenes. It was evident that a significant amount of attention was paid to detail. The camera?s would zoom in at just the right moment, catching all the detail as blood and sweat was knocked from someone?s face. It really helped add an intense visceral feel to the bare-knuckled fights, which are intense and visceral by their very nature. Everything just runs and flows very well.
Overall I thought Snatch was a great film. It was just so witty and clever, and not what you would expect from your usual jewel-heist film. All of the characters compliment each other and tie in to one another very well. The writing was crisp and refreshing, and just some very good dialogue all throughout. This film is just funny from start to finish. As I said earlier, it will stay in your mind long after it is over. Easily one of the funniest films to be made this decade. I absolutely recommend adding Snatch to your personal video library.
