Sniper Elite 3 Unveils Ridiculously Graphic "X-Ray Killcam"

The Sniper Elite 3 "X-Ray Killcam" sets a new benchmark in high-definition bone-shattering, blood-spraying, dude-murdering excess that borders on self-parody.

I've never played a Sniper Elite game so I have no idea what it's all about, although I assume it has something to do with putting bullets into people at extremely long ranges; and also, now that I've watched the new developer diary video, rendering the results of said bullet insertion in excruciatingly graphic detail.

How excruciating? Rebellion Developments says enemies will be composed of five unique "layers" - skin, bones and organs, which were present in Sniper Elite V2, plus newly-added muscle and circulatory systems - which react in visceral slow motion to the impact of your round when you make a particularly skillful shot. Bones now fracture dynamically at the point of impact while globs of blood will spurt in real 3D, resulting in a killcam experience that's dramatically improved over the original game.

"The money shot, the killcam, is that final bullet impact, and we really worked to get across the breaking of bones, the splitting of organs, and that tearing of muscle and sinew," Lead Audio Designer Nick Brewer, who seems rather excited about the whole thing, explains in the video. "So we took a little trip down to the local grocer's and bought all manners of fruit and veg, and spent a few days snapping them and twisting them, breaking them and squishing them between our hands to get the squelchy and cracky noises that we needed for all of the bones and organs."

The net result of all that effort looks cool in the video, but it's also kind of crazy, isn't it? The whole thing has a vaguely psychotic edge to it, like a parody video made to tweak the noses of fervent crusaders against video game violence. And yet it's not a parody; Rebellion has given these enemies skeletons, organs, circulatory systems and more, just so it looks more "realistic" (which is to say, cooler) when a large caliber bullet smashes into them.

Yeah, that's a little nuts.

Sniper Elite 3 is currently slated to launch in the early summer for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC.

I was a big fan of V2, and the X-ray cam was a great feature. Looking forward to picking this up :D

Sniper Elite 2 was a pretty average game, but that X-ray kill cam was absolute money! While trying get a headshot on a soldier firing a mounted machine gun I accidentally hit the ammo feeder and it exploded. What i got then was an X-ray of the explosion shattering the soldiers rib cage and bursting lungs. Yuck! Never did get a "nut shot" though.

I wonder if the testicle shot will make a comeback in V3. If it does I certainly hope that shot doesn't get anymore visceral.

It's difficult for gore in games to make me cringe. That definitely did the job, though.

I saw a related video in which a guy hit both of Hitler's testicles with one bullet, as someone with jewish ancestry I feel required to get the game just to make that shot now.

OT: That's extremely impressive, nasty yet impressive. I like it, wonder if it'd work if I used a submachine gun.

now this is "innovation" that I don't mind, screw those fucking waggle controls and motion control shit.

I think I played the first game a bit, didn't quite hit the spot at the time but I'll keep an eye out on this game.

I remember playing V2 with my friends and using it as the game to get them all to stop obsessing over mortal kombat fatalities, and it worked! It was a fun game and great spectacle to see who could get the best shots. I hope this one is even better and by the looks of it, it just might be!

And in V4, we'll get to see the memories of poor Schultz's little daughter playing on the swingset being destroyed in slow-motion as the bullet pierces through his highly rendered brain.

I've never been a huge fan of the X-Ray cam. It doesn't quite make sense for the genre; it's a silent sneak-'em-up shooty game. If this was in some kind of C-movie, pulp-inspired, dank horror-esque thing - like Painkiller - I'd be on board, but it just takes me out of the a game like Sniper. It's not quite camp enough to pull it off.

Don't give them any ideas ._.

I really don't see the point in this. I mean i love gory movies, heck, my favorite movie is the Thing (1982), but this is just so pointless.

I played V2 and really like it. There was just one major flaw with it.

The Xray kill cam showed up with EVERY. SINGLE. SHOT.

The first hour it was fun, after that it jut felt like a waste of time to see every bullet fly.

It should be a rare occasion for those perfect 1km shot, not even i happen to hit someones brain at 100m.

That said, i still look forward to this one.

If I remember correctly you could change the frequency of that slow mo kill cam, I think it was "never, sometimes and all the time".

I didn't play much of the second game but I remember it being rather generic and it's gimmick was this kill cam, hell of a fucking gimmick though.

Lining up a shot and then the anticipation of where it was going to go and what it would look like, then the pay off when the bullet did finally strike.

Yea you're right, and i figured that out later on, let's say 4 hours in. Problem was, it was standard (with me at least) on the max, show up every time, level.

Also, the fact that you could set how much you want to see it isn't really appealing to me, like i said, i'd prefere it if this mode was reserved for the REALLY awesome shots.

Thing is, how do you programme an awesome shot kill cam to activate on an awesome shot? Can't just base it on distance 'cos you could be pinging mile long shots all day with how easy the aiming can be set to. Where the bullets lands isn't very good 'cos like I said the aiming is so easy with that little red diamond that the awesome headshot is commonplace

I never much liked Sniper Elite V2 as a whole. For a game that proclaimed sniping as its core mechanic, there was far too much sneaking around and being forced to take out all your targets from behind at point blank range with that terrible silenced pistol. Not to mention the times when the game glitched so that I'd snipe a guy across the street with a shot to the head, see his brains splatter against the wall, only to have him raise the alarm then turn to shoot back at me.

However, when the kill-cam went off, that really did save the game, and gave me one of my favourite kills in recent memory. There was a time when I came across 5 soldiers lined up and facing me way down one street while an officer paced back and forth in front of them, chewing them out. No one saw me somehow, so I lined up a shot, waited til the officer was in the right position, then fired. I got the xray kill-cam as the bullet passed through his skull, but what happened next was the fun part.

The camera switched to a side view of the soldiers, facing the officers back. The bullet exited his skull, flattened and tumbling straight towards the middle soldier's face. Because it was in slow motion, this soldier spent a good two seconds glaring directly at this bullet hovering in the air in front of him with no change in expression before it struck him in the nose and went straight through. No xray kill-cam this time, but that expression, as though he was challenging the bullet to hit him, was just priceless.

Funny world we live in where its ok to show someones brains being blown out in X-ray vision and no-one raises an eyebrow but a a little softcore sex scene can lead to media hate campaigns...

Agreed. I wished they would focus more on gameplay than little cinematics. Not that I don't think they're neat though.
