So A Teacher At My School Was Just Fired...

Showing students Jackass 2 was probably enough to warrant a suspension at the least but based on his reputation and, how involved he is with the school in general I don't think it should have been an outright sacking. As for the B plot of the article: the power point about strangely dressed people in Wal*Mart, I don't see why it needed to be mentioned at all. It's somewhat immature to make fun of people based on their dress sense but I know of many places where people-watching is considered a great past time (and Wal*Mart really is one of the best places to go for that depending on the area you live in).

I'm hoping your petition works but I wouldn't count on it based on how draconian the public school system can be in terms of punishment enforcement.

High school? They've seen much worse than that and some probably done. Even if not, he wasn't forcing them to watch that. If someone has some serious trauma or anything like that because of this then alright, I understand the reaction.
However, it's just people who have decided that the video has done some damage to the kids. We don't know what the kids think about it.
He put it on the projector during class time. It's not as if the kids could just walk out without risking punishment. So yes, he essentially forced them to watch it. Sure, they'd all probably seen worse in terms of explicit material, but I'd still be pretty fucking pissed if someone essentially forced me to watch that stupid bullshit when I could either be doing something more productive or more enjoyable with my time.

Many apologies. I took a bit of a look at the situation, and gave your petition a sign. Probably won't mean anything, but still.

The one time one of our teachers was fired was when the police found a load of child pornography on his computer. Last I heard he was serving a year in prison. Obviously no one protested about it because it was a bit creepy.

Every teacher knows there are things you just don't show in class, and R rated movies are one of them. This guy may be a cool teacher, but he's an idiot for showing it in class. Your school board and police don't care if he is a nice guy or not, if he is showing an R rated movie in class (even if its just Jackass 2), then they'll assume he'd be alright with showing porn or 2 girls 1 cup.
You know there was at least one student that was "mommy! we watched Jackass 2 in class! I shouldn't even tell you that, but I am a fucking idiot and will anyways!"

Should he be fired? Probably not if this is an isolated incident. Should he be reprimanded? You bet your ass.

It doesn't matter if you've seen worse in school before or if the kids that he showed it to watch Jackass on their free time, the fact of the matter is that he showed it without consent and it is R rated.

Ok, the choice of movie was a little... odd, i would say, but here's my thing, When i was in high school, we watched movies all the time, We where allowed to, because they had something to do with the lesson, hell, we watched the MATRIX one time, and it tied into the lesson because the subject of the lesson was "The view we have on normal every day life" the lesson was about Neo, a man who lived his life like everyone else, breaking out of the norm, becoming something others viewed as odd, weird, stuff like that. im sure there where other movies that could have done that better, but this teacher i had knew that his students would like this better, and by god, everyone in the class got good grades on there papers because of it.

I was in ROTC too (Calm down anti military people, the only reason i say that is because the last time i said I was in ROTC here i got a crap load of hate by a very vocal group of people) our teacher, Sargent Norman, He was a bro tier teacher. He treated us like students, but also knew we where teens, and in a military like class, he talked to us like students AND how a soldier, this guy was one of my favorite teachers of all time, i remember, we where doing drills outside one day, and a army guy, could not have been older then 20, came up and talked to sarge about another ROTC teacher, after drills, one of my classmates asked Sarge what that was about, ill never forget what he said.

"He was just talking about his Sargent, yea, I might be an Ass, but that guy is an Asshole."

I laughed so hard, but it just goes to show the type of man he is, I tried to join Drill Team once, just to dick around, and he looked at me and started to laugh. "hehe, Yea, ive seen your grades." I know what you must be thinking, what a jerk right? But no, it did not feel like a teacher talking down to a student, or a Superior officer berating his Soldier, it felt like two friends talking, thats the type of guy he was, and He was one of the most respected teachers there.

Fuck. That'd be a teacher I would actually respect.

I myself study microbiology and medicine. Imagine discussing what would happen if a poisonous snake would bite ones scrotum with the class.

God forbid a teacher make class fun. That'd be so bad. The kids should be miserable. If they're not tearing their hair out, weeping, cutting themselves, or cursing your name and flipping you off every time you turn around--you're not teaching correctly. What a jackass. He totally deserved what he got.

And honestly, like those kids haven't seen that sort of thing before. What kind of idiot ignorant parent actually thinks that, in this day & age, their 13-year-old hasn't seen all kinds of crazy pornography? You can get porn on your phone, on your laptop, computer, tablet, from magezine stands, you can probably read extremely obscene shit in the bathrooms, and every kid has access to at least one of these resources. Unless he was teaching 8-year-olds or something (was he teaching 8-year-olds?) I think people are overreacting. It's just a dick in a sock. And the kids asked to see it. It's not like he just walked in and said, "Hey, kids! Who wants to see a man's dick get bitten by a snake?"

Whilst I think he's probably a good teacher and the kids have seen it before, them's the rules and I can totally understand why action has been taken against him.

Keep being vocal in your support of him, even if he doesn't get reinstated the protests will look good for his future employment elsewhere.

Seems unreasonable to fire him as far as I'm concerned, but the question is: does he have a history of doing this kind of stuff? I'd also like to point out that just because kids like him doesn't make him a good teacher. Kids like teachers who are fun, and often don't give a shit about how much they actually learn in the class, so teachers who spend all class showing jackass episodes and powerpoint presentations making fun of people for what they wear will be popular but should still not be hired. That said, I don't know how frequently he does this stuff.

Well, if this was a one-off occurance, then sacking him (if it comes to that) would be overkill. Yeah it should be balls on the chopping block for six months to remind him that he fucked up and really should think twice.

If this has happened multiple times with complaints from parents, then I think sacking him would be understandable.

So not the Point.

Yes Class should be more fun, but don't forget your also supposed to be teaching.
What did anybody learn from that class? It's alright to dick around at work?

Schools just not the place for that kind of behavior. Sure kids have seen worse and can swear in more colorful tones than probably most people over 30. That doesn't make it okay to subject kids to that kind of norm.

This was DUMB, even he knows it was wrong. It's really just a matter of principle, it doesn't matter what he did for the school or even if he's this super great guy who helps old Ladys cross the street and occasionally fights crime at night.
If the school said, okay slap on the wrist "bad teacher, stop that", they'd have to put up with the discussions that aren't really worth the effort to defend his platant mistake.

It's just best for him and everyone involved to move on from this.

I think it was a moronic thing for him to do , never mind the fact he broke a law or maybe 2 in the progress. Showing a movie in any class is a nono. just hope the owners of the movie dont jump on him to Would not put it passed them :)).As for the content, he should have used his brain.

Absolutely stupid. That's no reason to fire him. I mean, seriously, even if you don't like the fact that he did that it's not bad enough to fire him.

He wasn't just fucking around, the students were given their assignment.
he WAS fucking around. just because he's not giving a lesson doesn't mean he doesn't have work to do: course prep, correcting homework, grading tests, etc...

even substitutes usually have work-related shit to fill their time.

my mom was a substitute teacher for 30 years, sitting around watching a movie or reading books is not what they get paid for.
There's not much to suggest that he wasn't doing both. I multitask like that all the time. Especially if he was correcting homework or grading tests.
