It might be bullshit, but if this story is be believed, a lot of Parler's users and their data are about to get exposed to the world, including LEO agencies like the FBI, NSA, ATF, etc.

If you wonder why that's significant, Parler is apparently where a lot of the Right Wing Radicals(including Bugaloos and Proud Boys) have been congregating since Twitter and Facebook have actually been moderating their shit and Parler apparently isn't. Considering how these chuckleheads have bragged about their "Patriotic behavior" and livestreamed themselves attacking the capitol, it's not hard to imagine this might end up being a font of evidence and arrests for the FBI.

I know this isn't what you meant, but one wonders how many of those agencies were active users themselves who may be held accountable for vile rhetoric.

Ok based on the information I've seen online.

Not a hack.

A data scrape.

Hypothetical user: What's the difference?

Ok so lets say some-one ran a scrape on this forum and kept running it. They'd be able to scrape all our posts, Usernames and if they kept running the scrape they'd get old copies of posts before people edited or deleted them too.

Hypothetical user: So no personal info?

Not really but some info can be used somewhat to track some individuals. You see some videos uploaded there were geotagged which Parler apparently didn't bother stripping out after processing so some video on there if users hadn't disabled it contain Geo tagged data to give the longitude and latitude where the video was taken (note a few years ago Twitter or Tumblr didn't used to remove such data either and some adult content creators on the site had their locations leaked before the Tumbr porn ban by using said system).

So far, No emails, No street house addresses, no phone numbers, No SSI numbers are in the data because they were basically on non indexed areas of the site that crawlers wouldn't have access to.

I didn't even know what this app was until now. I don't get why anyone would give out such private info to this. Just like...make a discord or something?

Remember those big riots in the UK about 10 years ago? Bunch of people took photos of themselves posing with the stuff they'd nicked and put it on Facebook. Didn't exactly end well, as you might expect.

No cuz most of the time it wants your phone number. I don't use social media or apps like these for security reasons.

Was this app decentralized?

Yes. I'm always amazed by these services who say "Give us your phone number for increased security".

Sure bub. Right until you guys get hacked or otherwise lose a load of your customers' data, or sell it to someone.

And many times they'll point to their ToS that say they'll never sell the data.

...right up until they modify the ToS without warning or notification.
