I purchased Star wars: Republic Commando yesterday due to the game's reputation as being overlooked and underestimated. It had an overwhelmingliy positive reputation on Steam. Short story, I disagree and am exceedingly disappointed. The game having outdated controls I kind of expected and I can live with it being linear. But what the hell?!

I enter a large open room with a bridge. Barely anything to snipe, so I move out and get ambushed by genosians including an elite for the first time. The regular enemies respawn endlessly so there is no point in taking them down first, and my squad can't manage to focus on the elite while being bashed by sticks.

New try, place out sniper and defend around a bacta tank. We manage to kill it, the squad talks about it while being harrased by genosians. No problem I think, they will stop spawning now that we have taken down the boss. But they continue and another elite shows up and kills us.

So now that I have concluded that there is and endless respawn of not only regular genosians but also the elite ones, I press on like an idiot and barely reaches the next check point. NOW they will SURELY stop spawning right?? Nope, more of them and I get hung up on a new part right after. My sniper keeps getting killed when genosians land on him, I am out of ammo and my squad doesn't seem to be able to keep their act together.

Check walkthrough. OH, there is a bloody turret someplace! Huh, if only the game had informed that there are turrets in the game and that I should use it. Like a squadmate informing me of the turret, since I didn't see it due to well, endless waves of genosian warriors!!

My feel for the game is that it is like fire warrior but somehow manages to be waaay worse. There is one thing I do not accept in shooters and that is endless spawning enemies. It takes away all sense of tactics and actual thinking and replaces it with blind running and gunning. There is not even objectives to turn of the spawning, it just keep continuing! I really thought this was a semi-tactical FPS but I seem to be mistaken, easy mistake though seeing as it a squad based game with "Commando" in the title.

/Ragequitting rant off

So how did this game get such a good reputation again? The concept is great, the style is decent and the mechanics make sense but the gameplay is just downright horrid. There is no other way to put it. Is this related to Battlefront II and there being some rule that all Star Wars shooters must have endlessly spawning enemies until the player ragequits?

It's been a little while but I think your supposed to close the windows that they fly in through to stop them spawning, I believe you can hack a terminal in each room to do it.

Personally I loved Commando, it was such a nice break from shooters where your some kind of supersoldier that can take on an entire enemy army solo. I liked having to use my squadmates and I found them fun to use. Not sure what else to say. It's an old game and is a bit harder than most modern shooters but if you can get used to using your squad as your weapons and how you interact with the level then it's pretty fun.

If respawning enemies are a deal breaker then stop now because the game has a lot of areas where enemies spawn endlessly unless you stop them, usually with droid factories you need to destroy.

Well having only played the demo of the game all I can say is well, what did you expect? When it comes to star wars you're not dealing with a small terrorist group you are dealing with an entire army that spans many worlds. As a republic commando it's your job to get behind enemy lines and perform your mission objective or die trying. There are millions of troops out there who depend on you to take down whatever is in front of you. You didn't receive advanced training for nothing.

OT Yeah you pretty much have to use cover the most that you can as you dodge enemies. Although it seems your still at the beginning and this game does have allot to offer if you get further in.
