So does Samurai Jack and the Power Puff Girls take place in the same universe?

I just saw this one Facebook: http://www.icanhasinternets.com/2012/04/is-samurai-jack-set-in-a-post-powerpuff-girls-universe/'

and it got me wondering whether it was just an easter egg because the same guy created both series of if it was really meant to hint at an in-universe apocalypse.

What do you think?

Not entirely sure about samurai jack but I know Dexters Lab takes place in the same universe as the power puffs.

Technically thanks to that KND crossover with Billy and Mandy, it had also linked with several other CN shows-

Well, um, Genndy Tartakovsky was executive producer for Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory, then supervising producer for Billy and Mandy and Powerpuff Girls. In other words, the idea of a grand, shared universe is really cool to think about, but it's easier to just say that these characters and Easter eggs appeared in these different cartoons because they share production members. Sorry, but that's life.

I think that's correct. I doubt Mr Tartakovsky sat down with a pen and paper and decided to create a giant shared universe which to populate with shows. As evidenced by the fact that each of the shows doesn't really have a universe. Heck, the most common of settings are mutable across episodes (say, in Dexter's Lab, the house stays consistent in a very general sense - rooms are upstairs, Dexter's one is somewhere to the right, Dee Dee's is sort of opposite direction, the other details change otherwise), let alone having the same shared universe.

No. It's just the crew hiding Easter eggs in the show that longtime fans will recognize. I'm sure there's a wiki out there that details how every Cartoon Network show is connected (or at least the ones from that era), but it's not meant to be taken seriously. Like when Madam Foster is shown in the opening of My Little Pony. It's a nod to another show made by Lauren Faust, but it doesn't mean that Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends takes place in the same universe as My Little Pony.

Personally, I wish more shows would do this. Use their characters in cross overs. Sadly, I think copyright laws have become so insane that the odds of this happening are extremely low.

I am pretty sure it's an eater egg. Aku began taking over the world in a feudalish era, while the Powerpuff Girls is clearly set in a fairly modern time. So for the Powerpuff Girls to exist without Aku being a major point of their plot, the world would have to be largely ignoring Aku's centuries spanning campaign for world domination, or Aku(having just defeated the main force opposing him) just decided to lay low for a long ass time.

What if Him is an agent or variation of a latent Aku?

While most of them are Easter Eggs, Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls always seem to take place in the same universe to me. There's even an episode where the PPG team up with Major Glory, along with Val Hallen and a bunch of other super heroes, which goes beyond just a simple cameo and outright saying that it's a shared universe.

Then you have small things in the Powerpuff Girls, (Dexter cameos aside), like a Quackor cameo or Bubbles and Dee Dee having the same imaginary friend.

As for Samurai Jack, I think it could possibly take place in the same universe if you view it like Back to the Future 2: when Aku sends jack to the future and he reigns over the planet for centuries, this would be one alternate reality where it's very possible that neither Dexter nor Professor Utonium (and by extension the Powerpuff Girls) are ever even born.

If we were to ASSUME that Jack does eventually go back to his time and successfully defeat Aku, then reality would return to normal and centuries later Dexter and the PPG would be having their adventures in modern times.

Mindfuck. Seriously. That reminds me of the Worlds within Worlds Big Picture episode.

This is a very good thing. Everything Hanna-Barberra created was and is still fucking horrible, it pleases me to know that these insipid characters all died horribly, the rest of humanity was a small price to pay.

Oh come on man! Without them we wouldn't have this particularly well-written and witty little show!

Seriously, their insipidity was forgiven the moment Grape Ape was shot because the cops thought he kept on calling himself "Rape Ape".

Unfortunately the death of one Harvey Birdman is a sacrifice that needs to be made to make sure that the likes of The Huckleberry Hound Show, The Flintstones, The Yogi Bear Show, Jonny Quest, The Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, and The Smurfs are wiped off the face of the planet.
