So I just got acquainted with "The Boys" Amazon's adaption of a very "unique" Superhero Comic Book.

I'm pretty sure Pat Mills will have helped develop Garth Ennis's career, as if I remember rightly Mills was editor of 2000AD when Ennis was starting out in comics there. And 2000AD has traditionally been very antihero-centric.

I wonder how 2000AD is doing these days. I started reading it about 1987/1988, kept up until the the mid-late 90s and eventually faded out somewhere early 2000s.
Apparently 2000AD has done pretty well during the pandemic. Rebellion switched distribution to newsagents and corner shops rather than stores like WH Smiths to maintain the weekly sales. Their subscriptions and online sales have increased as well.

Rebellion have also released a few specials this year based on seventies comics like Battle and Action. I ordered some of them a couple of weeks ago but haven't got round to reading them yet.

Has Karl Urban's British accent improved in the second series?
Seems fine to me but I'm from New England, not the OG so... I'm not the best to judge.
Have they said how long this thing is going to be? They should do no more than 5 seasons.
They've been renewed for a 3rd season

I can't believe there is only one more episode for season 2. It's been a hoot.

I don't know how long they can maintain this kind of quality and worried they're already talking spinoffs which can water down the talent. Back in the day, a guy named Peter David, for instance, was writing the best Hulk books I'd ever read. Then they started having him write everything and quality went down the tubes. I hope that doesn't happen here.

Sucks there's only one more episode to go. It's been fun having a good weekly show to look forward to. Didn't do this since Twin Peaks 2017.

Nice to know. I have fond memories, and wish it well. Particularly at how badly its publisher fucked it back in the 80s/90s: highly profitable, but it was squeezed dry for those profits and so hugely underinvested in. Some of the content was thus bewlideringly poor.

I remember 2000AD had a mini crisis years back because their distribution deal was up for renegotiation, and their existing distributor mighily screwed up their bid so 2000AD went with an apparently cheaper rival - it's just their old distributor had missed off its bid all sorts of deals and angles it had that meant it was offering a vastly better service than its price suggested.

On one hand I've enjoyed this series.

On the other it feels so insubstantial really like a set up for seasons to come. There hasn't been huge major movements or developments.

What has actually happened this season that could be seen as a major shift:

StormFront enters the 7

Starlight has basically decided to abandon the 7

Homelander now has his son / convinced his son to turn against Bekka.

Maeve and Elena split.

Frenchie and Kimiko are starting to get on better terms.

There's been lots of stuff being set up but not yet paid off really.

This season wasn't as interesting as the last one.
This one felt like a set up really for later.

I kind of honestly wonder if this is some sort of a set up to lead into some of the events of the comics sort of now.

I think I officially hate week to week release. I'm sick and tired of Youtube knowing what I watch and spoiling the season because it thinks I want that. Stormfront, Nuewman etc twists were known weeks before it was shown up on the show. To watch a show nowadays you have to quarantine yourself from all other media.

The girl fight at the end was very cheap. And stupid. That could have been a good payoff and it wasnt.

It seems that some streaming services have opted for a weekly release so people can still talk about it for awhile. Having the whole season come out on one day, makes people forget the show in a month.

Also keeps it in the news cycle longer so free advertising for longer.

I understand the concept

You also get spoiled and have to deliberately go out of your way to try and enjoy it.

I want to watch Lovecraft Country. I heard it was weekly release so I haven't started watching it yet. I checked how many episodes are left. Just once. Now I get a whole slew of Youtube videos in my feed spoiling everything

I want to watch my show without all the incessant spoilers that happens when I look at my phone

I assumed the weekly episode drop was just a tactic to mitigate people binging the one new show they want in a free trial and then cancelling before payment.

Cant think of any other media that has a group of women kicking a woman on the floor.
Kill Bill, the Bride’s flashback has the other Deadly Vipers kicking the shit out of her. And hey, she was pregnant at the time too so extra points I guess.

I have a sort of love/hate relationship with the show. It's.."cool" I guess. I actually did read all the comics and was mildly cynical about them doing an adaptation. I think in general I'm just sort of sick of hollywood adaptations because they say they love the material and then most of the time they just write whatever they want and throw in references to the source material. I wish everything wasn't so monetarily connected that they can't just call it inspired by or a reimagining. *looking at you Monster Hunter*

While theres some similar storylines and characters, but it's not thematically anything like the comics. So it leads me to question, why even adapt it? Just do your own thing...but money is the answer.

This is not to say this show isn't good, its fine. I say fine and not "great" because it felt..familiar. Like everything about the pacing and writing makes me feel like I've seen all the edginess and drama somewhere else. Its a little like pop music. its said that pop at one point was identifiable by a consistent time and length verse-chorus structure. Thats what The Boys feels like. Like I can tell based on which episode it is when the big twist or reveal is going to happen and where they're going to jam in some scene lifted from the comics so the simspons comicbook shop nerd can feel satisfied like whenever someone turns on a light saber in starwars. Everybody goes " THEY DID THE THING" and lets go the fact that Butchers accent is hilariously bad and that Frenchie isn't french.

I will say..I didnt like the comics. They are very infantile and every page is gore porn. Thats one thing the show, an oddity, did right. Most of the time we complain about adaptations removing "all the good stuff" or toning down comic violence. In this one case, however gross you think the show is? Its practically Rated G compared to the comics. Thats oddly the biggest improvement for me.

The comics are different from the show in tone a bit, and obviously it was adapted to fit the times. Major plot and story points were shuffled around - it doesn't feel like the comic that much anymore. It's less raunchy, if you can even imagine that. I hope they will continue to lean on the two major leads (Butcher and Homelander) because their actor's performances were spot on.

Girls get it done.

Ayy they had the same scene in the comics, they were just all gender-swapped from men.

Just because you have a R rating, doesn't mean you should. Preacher focusing so much on shock value doesnt make it better.

Didn't read the comics bit knew of them beforehand. The Deep sounded like a wasted space so giving him something to do is good. It also sounded like The 7 and The Boys had no interactions til the end. I don't like that idea
