this has got me thinking

after tradgic stuff like the london riots and the norwegian shooting you often get (please excuse my langurage) self rightious twats calling for the banning of violent videogames, one hilarious comment on a site "should we ban this stuff? just in case"...yeah sure not big deal...here take my video games I really dont mind, you obviously know better

(by that I dont mean peopel who are perhaps upset and looking for an answer...I mean annoying idiots who keep popping and want to ban videogames because they have problem with them)

anyway back on topic, lets say though if they did ban games with certain levels of violence, Im not realy sure what the criteria would be......could this actually be agood in a way?

now dont get me wrong, I dont think it would be good, I dont think a medium can really grow if its got rediculous restrictions on it

BUT on the other hand do you think it could make devs a little more creative in providing an experience? like more Portal and less call of duty?

OR would we forever be doomed to casual fluff and more mario games?

I believe if they took away the violence I cause in video games I would direct that violence towards the bastards that come to my house to take them.

You can take my life, but you'll never take MY VIDEO GAMESSSSSSS.

I do apologise to any Scottish people reading this I just couldn't resist.

There are plenty of non-violent games which are awesome. However, if they did get rid of all the violence from games we'd not have Shadow of the Colossus or Devil May Cry or Deus Ex or Metal Gear Solid.

I think that banning violent games would do nothing to lower the level of public violence. I mean you might as well start banning certain books and movies. And paintings. And music.

Sad thing with your scenario is that they'd still allow violence in movies and TV.
Because you're not 'actually killing anything' with those forms of media or some other rubbish.
And sure, maybe you would get more Portals, but that also means you'd get no more Half-Lifes.

If they ban violent video games then I would be expecting them to ban anything else that contains violence such as books and movies.

Performance art will always be more violent than gaming and disturbing so i don't think a ban could ever happen. (sowing an ear to you arm any one?)
but it wouldn't turn me off gaming if people were still making good games.

i would give up from career as a scientist, and start political activism to ban the bible, as it contains: suicide, incest bestially, sadomasochism, violent sexaul acts, murder, morbid violence, use of drugs and alcoho, voyeurism, revenge, undermining authority figures, lawlessness, and human rights violations and atrocites.

either free speech or no speech, fair is fair

IF violent videogames were banned, we'd probably see a large increase in teen and young adult murder/suicide rates.

All those people with homicidal tendencies wouldnt have an outlet for their anger/rage/destruction. And there would probably be more riots.

Dont get me wrong, a riot every now and then is a good thing. It helps keep the government in check. But a constant stream of them is counter productive to the idea of order.

((Please note, i do not endorse, nor believe riots in the name of pointless things is good. Nor do i believe murder is a good thing))

As well as an ironic increase in violent crime, if violent video games were banned, we'd barely have any video games.

I always found this double standard amusing, and yet in this day and age if someone does something "the voice in their head" tells them we lock them up and give them psychiatric help.

I'm sure william wallace would be fine with the use of the quote, if you think about it, if they did ban violent games, us gamers would be alot like the scottish from their times, where the big man (england in his case, the courts in ours) is trying to suppress us, and take away the things we love (their country in his case, our games in ours), so actually, I think he'd approve of the use.

Casual stuff already sells like crazy so it wouldnt be much of a surprise if videogames in the absence of any adult content would very quickly become simple childrens toys.

Especially considering lots of people already seem to think they are... seriously theres something wrong when I go into "toys r us" to help my friend buy a birthday present for his little brother and boom theres a freeking Xbox and ps3 section

actually I think we have graduated from "childrens toys" to "imature entertainment" not that thats much better, its still not taken seriously by some mainstream people

Did his copy of the constitution have a typo, with his need to show off his right to 'ear arms'?

Yeah, You gave FOX a copy of Portal and in 10 minutes they'd have a video montage entitled 'videogame torture porn being sold to YOUR kids' and it'd just be 30 seconds of forced deaths of the main character into fire, lasers, acid, crushers, spikes and the like.

Mario can be spun to be animal cruelty, and probably already has by those wacko fucknuts at PETA. It is after all, a step by step (pun not intended) guide on how to murder turtles by stamping on them.

We allow them to take away shooters and Mortal Kombat, and they'll just shift their target onto lesser crimes, until Pong is being discussed in Congress for 'encouraging combatative behaviour patterns in youths'.

Just as if we managed to completely eradicate the C word and F word, all the 'family values' groups would instantly redirect their efforts to ban shit, piss, tits and cock. Give em a year and we'll be calling our bottoms 'the devil's underside'

There are plenty of violent games that can be found free on-line, stop by any large flash portal and there are scads of them. There's no good way to regulate these games so kids would still have access to them - and of course there would be absolutely no regulation of them at all.

I think people in the industry would be able to point this out and convince lawmakers that they'd be better off with regulated mature games rather than the scary scary internet.

Unless of course government goes the other way, and attempts to regulate the internet instead.
