So if you didn't hear about the Dashcon $17,000 debacle...

The story as related by me, your lovely Queen Michael, is basically this. Dashcon [footnote]a convention for Tumblr fans,[/footnote] declared -- right as the con was going on -- that the hotel that hosted the convention would throw them out unless they paid $20,000 right away. According to the con-organizers, the original agreement was that this money "would be paid after the weekend when we had all of our money received," and when the hotel asked for the money upfront it was a change of the agreement. As far as I've been able to figure out, the pay-afterwards thing was a verbal agreement that the fine print of the contract gave the hotel right to change if they wanted.

The organizers needed $17,000 more than they had to be able to fulfill this request. They managed to raise this from the web thanks to literally tons of generous people, but many human beans[footnote]If you don't get this reference then you cannot have had a good childhood[/footnote] have started wondering if this was an actual demand from the hotel. One Tumblr user claims that he contacted the hotel, which replied that no such demand had been made.

One theory is that the hotel demanded this in order to be able to throw out the con-goers, since said con-goers didn't look like the kind of person that the swanky hotel wanted as guests. That the con-people actually managed to produce all that money was a surprise.

Another controversy is the fact that the Welcome to Night Vale cast, that were supposed to have a panel, left the convention when it turned out thay they'd get paid not right away, but rather at some point, somehow. To be clear: They'd get some right away, in cash, and the rest would be paid through Paypal... eventually. Apparently, the Paypal moolah would have to wait a little while, since[footnote]according to the Dashcon staff[/footnote] Paypal wasn't functioning at the moment.

Since the Night Vale panel cost extra, the people who paid for it will be given "an extra hour with the ball pit, as well as an entry each into a raffle where we will be giving away a framed Stan Lee Autograph, a framed Richard Armitage Autograph, a framed Walking Dead photo with the full cast autographs, a signed Martin Freeman autograph, and more! So many cool prizes!! Additionally, you?ll be allowed first come first serve places at the Time Crash[footnote]a Doctor Who-themed band[/footnote] concert tonight for what extra room we have." In other words, they're not going to refund the money that people paid for a panel that never happened. Some people are calling it a scam, and on social media people are talking lots about how those who paid for a Night Vale panel will get an hour in the inflatable-kiddeie-pool-sized ball pit instead. The word "scam" is being used a lot.

Another complaint is that the schedule didn't announce any kind of age limit on the BDSM panel, but it turns out that they did check people's age at the door, they just forgot to mention that on the Internet schedule. Granted, the age-checks weren't perfect and some people who shouldn't have made it in did.

Here [http://shylocknotsherlock.tumblr.com/post/91588456665] is a link to some of the complaints that have been made about Dashcon.

What are your thoughts?

Well, obviously the 17 grand was a fake problem created by the Femnazis to fund their mischievous ways. With this money they're one step closer to their goal of world domination and creating a society where only women rule and men are saved for forced labor... after being castrated of course.

In reality, I see either two situations here. One pessimistic and one optimistic. The bad, some humans are greedy, selfish creatures who seek to profit off others through deceptive means. Those humans are in charge of the Dashcon and are now rolling around in 17 grand, laughing at the people who donated money to them. The good, they actually needed the money and people who wanted to attend gladly gave some more money for this to happen. I prefer and think the latter until other evidence is confirmed.

The second part, I think is bull-crap, but it is just business. Refunds are tedious and time-consuming, better to just give them some added perks. Even if the people who purchased the privilege don't want any of them. To clarify again, I don't agree with this. I just understand why.

This is... hilarious, in a quiet sort of way.

For the 17k, there isn't any question, hotels don't act like that, neither do convention centres. I would have called bull on it the moment I saw it and warned everyone about it.

For the second, I'd have to agree with both the cast for their actions (whoever came up with that plan is a moron for thinking it would work) and the fans who are pissed for not being allowed a refund on what is very much a refund worthy development. The people who organized this are cons, there's no two ways about it.

It was a convention run by people who had no idea what they were doing, and consequently boned it the hell up.

Hopefully, tumbler (Oh yah, I went there) learned something - One, check the production quality of the Con (Along with past Con management), and two, tumbler is a social media, with no inherent content or theme, and makes for a poor Con concept in the first place.

I can understand if it was a case of "work now pay later" which something people (artists and such) have to be wary of, however if it was just an issue of patience on part of the Nightvale people then that was mabye a bit dickish of them

[sub/]I also wonder if the Nightvale cast included Mara Wilson (matilda)[/sub]

If this happened around last Monday, I can attest that PayPal was down. I myself was trying to do stuff with it and kept getting a message that there was something wrong with their servers.

Anyway, this does sound very fishy. Let's hope if this was a hoax they get caught, and more importantly people get their money back. Also, I GOT THE HUMAN BEANS JOKE!

I did read about this and the convention wasn't even an hour and a half away from my house. The people who set it up with unexperienced and basically all teenagers. It shouldn't have even happened in the first place and I'm surprised no one shut them down earlier. I feel bad for everyone who donated to it and wasted money going to it.

Obviously, this is just more of 4Chan trolling Tumblr. What else could it be?
Incompetence? A scam? Nah, it's obviously 4Chan.

No, but seriously, a Convention for Tumblr? That just doesn't seem like it would work. Might as well make Twitcon, next.

I'm getting a perverse glee for seeing this

It's like the perfect combination of train wreck, internet drama and mis-management in the shittiest smoothie ever made

I feel for the people who got scammed though; that's never a fun experience

Given the absolute enormity of stuff on Tumblr, what exactly was this Dashcon all about?

Don't forget there were +18 panels that were allowing minors in them and Dashcon didn't even bat an eyelid on that.

That screams shitty organization.

A bunch of BDSM and other 18+ oriented stuff that minors think is cool apparently.

Minors at a Tumblr inspired BDSM-fest? That can't be right....

It's not the conventions fault. Kids always lie on those 'Are you 18?' prompts.

The reality was that is was basically a SuperWhoLock con or, a fandom convention, or a convention that was an 'anime' convention without it being labeled as such.

What I feel bad for, are the vendors and guests that went and ended up not getting what they promised in terms of benefits and costs being paid for. one of my favorite comic artists was there. :( Hope she's okay.

Well, I did some googling and apparently a lot of the people organizing the con were teenagers (the youngest was apparently 13 years old). So I'm not really surprised that the con was such a flop.

Here's a photo of the ball pit they had for the con:
