The story as related by me, your lovely Queen Michael, is basically this. Dashcon [footnote]a convention for Tumblr fans,[/footnote] declared -- right as the con was going on -- that the hotel that hosted the convention would throw them out unless they paid $20,000 right away. According to the con-organizers, the original agreement was that this money "would be paid after the weekend when we had all of our money received," and when the hotel asked for the money upfront it was a change of the agreement. As far as I've been able to figure out, the pay-afterwards thing was a verbal agreement that the fine print of the contract gave the hotel right to change if they wanted.
The organizers needed $17,000 more than they had to be able to fulfill this request. They managed to raise this from the web thanks to literally tons of generous people, but many human beans[footnote]If you don't get this reference then you cannot have had a good childhood[/footnote] have started wondering if this was an actual demand from the hotel. One Tumblr user claims that he contacted the hotel, which replied that no such demand had been made.
One theory is that the hotel demanded this in order to be able to throw out the con-goers, since said con-goers didn't look like the kind of person that the swanky hotel wanted as guests. That the con-people actually managed to produce all that money was a surprise.
Another controversy is the fact that the Welcome to Night Vale cast, that were supposed to have a panel, left the convention when it turned out thay they'd get paid not right away, but rather at some point, somehow. To be clear: They'd get some right away, in cash, and the rest would be paid through Paypal... eventually. Apparently, the Paypal moolah would have to wait a little while, since[footnote]according to the Dashcon staff[/footnote] Paypal wasn't functioning at the moment.
Since the Night Vale panel cost extra, the people who paid for it will be given "an extra hour with the ball pit, as well as an entry each into a raffle where we will be giving away a framed Stan Lee Autograph, a framed Richard Armitage Autograph, a framed Walking Dead photo with the full cast autographs, a signed Martin Freeman autograph, and more! So many cool prizes!! Additionally, you?ll be allowed first come first serve places at the Time Crash[footnote]a Doctor Who-themed band[/footnote] concert tonight for what extra room we have." In other words, they're not going to refund the money that people paid for a panel that never happened. Some people are calling it a scam, and on social media people are talking lots about how those who paid for a Night Vale panel will get an hour in the inflatable-kiddeie-pool-sized ball pit instead. The word "scam" is being used a lot.
Another complaint is that the schedule didn't announce any kind of age limit on the BDSM panel, but it turns out that they did check people's age at the door, they just forgot to mention that on the Internet schedule. Granted, the age-checks weren't perfect and some people who shouldn't have made it in did.

What are your thoughts?
