So I'm turning 18...

Didn't do diddly squat. Some relatives came along, I ate cake, got some cash, was bored. Not having friends sucks.

To be honest I didn't care all that much. I'm turning 20 in a month now, and I do care about that but in a negative way.

Scared shitless about turning the big two-o'. Quarter-life crisis coming up.

You want to do something extra special? Surprise them. Let them know you care for them. Don't wait for the sun to go around the earth a certain number of times.

I was just replying to how you said you should behave as if everyday were a birthday/etc.

The regularity does help with planning though. I mean, what if you wanted to get 10 of your friends together for a party to celebrate whatever and you only text them an hour before you want them over. The case with most people is that they will be busy/unavailable/already occupied/etc. If you told people in advance "Hey, you wanna come to mine for my birthday next week?" they'd have time to prepare.

I realise it takes away the surprise for the timing, but you could always just GO somewere surprising instead?

You need an excuse to celebrate life? I guess I see where you're coming from; it's so hard to be happy and excited that you're alive all year 'round. I can totally understand marking the date on the calendar, like a chore, so you know when you can celebrate your very existence with friends.

Why is it an arbitrary number? Its the celberation of your birth and the day you came into existance and coming of age. Thanksgiven and all like it are the celebration of a bountiful harvest, chrismas is the celebration of resting during the harsh winter(all cultures have something similar to it) and why not celebrat those things? So do you celebrat life everyday intill your birthday where you sulk around and complain about it being just and arbitrary number?

OT-I did nothing on my actual birthday (waiting for ID) but when my ID came through we treated that as my birthday and went out with the lads and got extremely drunk

Had a party at my house, didnt know 3/4s of the people who showed up, some group of seedy dudes were doing drug deals whilst chilling on my trampoline, heaps of people got their shit stolen, i swear there was a group of at least 20 gay people there and to top it all off some girl had a seizure in the backyard and we had to call an ambulance... i dont remember too much apart from that

Or just say: Hey, I'm thinking we all go out next week and shout [insert name here] a [insert preferred beverage here]. Who's in?

Why wait? My friends and family are important to me.

And how is that different from "waiting for a pre-assigned day"?

And I've never said that people should only go out for their birthdays and nothing else. What's the problem with going out randomly all through the year then going again to commemorate a time in your life?

Also you may wanna talk about this with your fiancee. Is she okay with you not wanting to celebrate your wedding anniversary?

Arh yes, the 18th birthday! Big day, and congratulations on sunday. I got drunk and had a ton of fun with a lot of mates. I lived in a small town of 2000 people at the time, and we went around everywhere and made a whole heap of trouble. Good times, good times.

I got slaughtered and puked for the first time... even though I'd drank before... and my little sister was drinking at my party too - and didn't puke since she was a heavier drinker than me (experience, not mass, I'm 13.5 stone)

IT was funny because I started off with beer, went on to various cocktails, then downed a bottle of King cobra and proceeded to projectile vomit over one place in the garden.

I went out with all my friends (since I was one of last to turn 18 in my group. Damn you May birthdays!) so there was like 15 of us. Really good night. I'd suggest maybe doing a group activity. We went paintballing for my friends 18th and it was seriously awesome. Wish I'd done it for my birthday now actually....
