So is Everspace 2 Similar to Freelancer?

So I have ES 2 in my wishlist, and I really enjoy open space type games. But ....something about it keeps making me hesitant to play it. But, then I watch some gameplay, and my brain keeps saying "It's like Freelancer....you loved Freelance"

So, for anyone who has played it, would you say it's similar (I understand it's not like a clone or something). But I mean like, the same kind of open ended, "go be a pirate, or go be a trader, or be a star police, whatever you want as you hop from system to system", kind of vibe?

Anybody pickup everspace 2? I loved the 1st one but didn't like the rogue like element so I'm pretty stocked that they made it open world, but at the same time I'm tired of picking up space sim game and finding out I just purchased "space eurotruck simulator". I bit the bullet and picked it...

Sound like its still very much early access so it might be hard to judge.

I think the game has only 8 solar system, which honestly sounds great (but different from freelance). I'd much rather that than 10000 randomly generated (ie generic) system.
