Ugh, I got Neverwinter Nights 2 on Steam and I can't stand it. Firstly there's the fact that they decided to convert the D&D 3rd edition system as directly as possible, but make it real time. Now that worked quite well with KotOR, but that's because they didn't try to convert all the combat mechanics that really don't work with a human DM, like the spell system...

Actually I just realised that you weren't asking what people thought of the game itself, so I'll just stop there rather than ranting.

Not all that sure if it will run on Windows 7, i've never tried.
just to verify, played and beat the whole game on windows 7 running flawlessly.
Now about this, my computer runs Windows 7. It's nothing special, but it can play Half Life 2 and Dragon Age: Origins perfectly smoothly with quite high settings. But when I try to play NWN 2 on anything other than the lowest settings (or quite close to them, anyway) I get pretty horrible lag. I normally don't mind turning down settings for smooth performance but this game looks ugly as sin on low settings.
i can't remember exactly but there was ONE setting that did mess up absolutely everything for alot of people, i think if you turned on detailed shadows or water reflection, can't remember if it was both or either or, but it would turn anyone's game into slideshow galore/freeze tag. so just curious if you maybe had those on?

Okay, so I might need some help. There's not laggy animations so far, but there is one big issue.
About every 5 minutes or so the screen goes black, the game minimizes, and then comes back. After about 5 of these in one session, it quits. Meaning that it took me nearly an hour to complete the harvest fair, when that should have taken, what, 30 mins max?

Any help?
Well never happened to me personally, but from what I hear its either the graphic card or some kind of antivirus shutting down the program. So getting new drivers for the graphics card or turning off the antivirus while playing should theoretically fix the problem.

Well, I heard about that before, and while the driver update did nothing, I'll give the anit-virus off a shot.
If this works I will love you forever.

Hope it helps, it really is a good game with all the technical issues aside.

Ack...now I face a dilehmma.

Neverwinter Nights 2
Knights of the Old Republic I(or II)
Gothic Collection

What do?
Been around a decade since I last played Gothic, so dont really know what to tell you on that one. Now between NWN and KOTOR ... its largely a difference in setting rather than gameplay. If you like star wars you should probably try KOTOR first, if you like fantasy/D&D more then NWN2 is rather nice and has that spirit of classic RPGs instead of what passes for RPGs these days.
RPG Genre has been fucked up by developers trying to pass their crappy hack n slash action games as RPGs.

Games branded as RPGs nowadays are mostly advanced statistics simulators, with hardly ever decent story or choices. I mean without the RP part its just Gs, and how can there be any RP if your influence on the game goes nowhere beyond deciding how to best kill stuff. Just because something has stats doesnt truly make it an RPG, BIOS and Task Manager have stats but noone seems to call them RPGs.

Well, it delayed it for a bit. I was able to get to the point where you have to leave for the swamp and then pow. Crash.
Guuuuh, I'm this close to giving up on this game.

Have you got all the patches? That made a big difference for me, when i was playing it? Maybe put all gfx settings down, and see if that stops the problem?

Well, if you haven't installed the latest patches then you should, also I recommend saving your game every time you try to travel to another area. Besides that, there really isnt much more to do, try doing it loading and traveling again a couple more times (the swamp, castle and tavern are a bit famous for causing crashes), if it works save and forget about it, you'll never see that wretched swamp again (you'll see other ones). If after several times it still crashes then its time to find something less buggy.

(Game version should be 1.23 and you should have DirectX 9.0c, maybe try running it in compatibility mode if all else fails)

I'm not sure if the main game is worth the effort to be honest. The expansions on the other hand, were alot better, less glitchy if I remember correctly too (didn't have any of the problems I had in the main game with Mask of the Betrayer or Storm of Zehir).
