Well I'm pretty sure I'm royally screwed here. So I've been playing Planescape Torment recently and so far I've been enjoying it. I started with 17 wisdom, 17 intelligence and 13 charisma from following the advice of Blayze the 7th poster on this link.

I started like this because writing has always been Obsidian's/Black Isle's strong-point so I figured the more dialog options the better. So I started like this and finally after about 5 previous attempts managed to find the way out of the mortuary. Then it was time to go figure out how to be a mage...where do I go? Well no matter odds are I'll run into that person later. So I ran around and ended up in the area where all the collectors are trying to find Pharod figuring I'll just go along the main story. After going into an odd cave and being threatened by someone who was in a group of collectors I ran down a hallway and found a group of hostile collectors who then killed me. After waking up on a slab used by some crazy old lady I then left and opened the map to see pharod was nearby so I ran to him. After a talk with him he told me to go into some catacombs to find a sphere, I think, and gave me permission to get the guards to open the gate there. So I ran in there and now I can't kill anything. I tried killing a group of mice but one of them uses freaking lightning on me. So now I'm screwed and I ask this.
What do I do? Thankfully I have an autosave that's not far back with me about to leave the mortuary so I can restart from there but what do I do to make sure I don't get screwed again?

I'm playing with the same stats as you, and I'm not really having trouble with anything, so don't worry about that.

The lady that teaches you to be a mage is in the middle hut in ragpicker's square, which is the area before you go into the cave and run into the angry collectors. She'll make you do some easy errands and then teach you to be a mage.

If you're having trouble, I'd highly recommend hanging around the hive and doing a few quests to level up or get some good items. If you help the crazy lady who's scared of doors that hangs around outside the mortuary, you'll get magic teeth which are very good for morte. A collectors hanging around ragpicker's square will teach you how to be a thief, and a guy in the NW corner of the hive will teach you to be a better fighter. If you've missed Dakkon, and this is very easy to do if you don't know to look for him, then he's hanging around the smoldering corpse bar, so be sure to pick him up. The alley of dangerous angles has a ton of guys to kill/loot, and the lone wolf guy hiding at the top of the area will give you a lot of exp/gold if you help him. Talking to Dakkon about his teachings will get you some extra exp and spells too.

Once you have three characters, a couple more levels, and some better spells/equipment, then handling Pharod's request is pretty simple in terms of combat, although there's a lot of little, important details or items that are easy to miss in the area. Just make sure to explore the drowned nations area that you'll come to very thoroughly.

The rats can only cast spells while in large numbers, so once you manage to kill the first couple, then taking care of the rest is a breeze. Have fun

Ok that all helps a TON. Thanks a lot for all of that advice. Granted with my stats I'll be going mage obviously but I'll be bookmarking this for the other 2. I did run into the thief guy in my run but that wasn't what I wanted to be so no point in that.
