you can't show penetration or a "stiffy!".

That's classed as hardcore pornography and as such you wouldn't be able to sell the game in any high street shop.

Forcing gamers to go into seedy xxx stores! (like they've not seen the inside of one of those before!)

It was usually just that, but IIRC every now and again it did show the director watching bits of it over a television. It even hinted he was masturbating to it sometimes.

EDIT:

There was one in the first Dragon age (maybe the second one too, I ain't played that).

Of course it was the usual cringe-worthy Bioware sex scene, with them dry humping each other in their underwear, so I don't know if that counts.

Yeah I guess it's the sex.

Most games are America-pandering prude media. You couldn't market it otherwise.
Look at Hollywood, and then look at European movies. That's why.

Good thing we have the Internet to sell unrated products on now, eh?

Well, Medal of Honor (2010) showed us that it still considered inappropriate to allow people to play as the Taliban in the multiplayer, and I'd imagine the same goes with anyone that America has fought within the last ten years.

Rape also seems to be a very taboo subject, given the uproar that was given after the Tomb Raider trailer. Then again, that came during a spike in the discussion about sexism in games, so I'm not sure if the issue was blown out of proportion as a result and people would have been otherwise fine with it.

I also imagine that there are certain subjects that would stir up controversy. Trying to make a game that accurately depicts pre-Civil War America or the Holocaust in all of their horrors would likely create at least some controversy, but I doubt any of them would get censored.

It all depends on the rating. I haven't played Far Cry 3 yet, but do those scenes show full on mother effing hardcore penetration?
Nope, not even sex. Just a topless character grinding the main character, that is wearing pants... he was very likely rapped but they dont show that part.

There is a diferent guy there that also gets raped by a man but you never see it.

OT: Most stuff that isnt allowed is related to sex. Then theres the "playing on the other side" of shooters.

Most games still don't allow for children dying, RE: Skyrim controversy.

I'm sorry, but if no one is 'off limits' in movies (or even TV shows), I don't think it should be the same for games to have this extra boundary. I know people argue:
"Why would you want to shoot a kid, are you a sicko?"
And to that I say "Why would you want to shoot anyone?". Doing something in a video game isn't evidence of approval for said action, and if it was, well, then you're still a fucking murder, considering the digital body count the average CoD produces.

I don't want to kill digital kids, but it is very jarring that you can kill most/all NPCs in the game but them, and it makes it stand out. It also kind of bothered me in Dead Rising you were at a shopping mall with playgrounds and toy stores everywhere, but there were no child zombies. That would have been a cool variation of enemy.

The first AAA that allows for the children to be as vulnerable as all other NPCs will receive a mental award from me for just having balls, if nothing else.

Bioware has explored that area pretty well in their 'set it up, then fade to black' style of depicting people (and aliens) getting it on.

I'm sure if they attempted to actually show something it would cause an uproar from groups like 'one million mums'.

As far as I know, it's sex and anything where kids aren't being happy go lucky little snots.

I don't know how often kids are shown being used for slave labor in gritty games, but that could be from the modern thought that kids should never do such dangerous things like cleaning around working machines or mining. http://www.continuetolearn.uiowa.edu/laborctr/child_labor/about/us_history.html Kids were maimed or killed, yet it was considered normal at the time and is rarely mentioned today.

Sex is also taboo, but probably because it's just awkward to look at with pixels and sex is still considered private (at least until you see how people dance in clubs). Not to mention that game companies don't want to exclude a chunk of their paying consumer base by making games for adults only, even if kids will find a way to watch the sex scenes anyways.

There's also a bit of a fuss about playing as the Bad Guys, but that may come from wanting to save the world rather than destroy it. Or simply not liking how the Bad Guys tend to be shown as ugly and dirty compared to the Good Guys. Or diehard patriots who don't want to see things from the other side.

Given enough time and these things won't be quite as controversial.

So... I'm confused. Where is the line drawn at this point? Does one even still exist for what can be put into a game? What do people besides myself think?
There should not be a line to draw. you should not be able to censor creativity.

However, in reality, there still is. A graphical sex scenes are a nono. altrough some games like Mass Effect seems to go there (havent played Far Cry 3, wont, after FC2 fiasco im not touching it). Same-sex sex (god that strange construction) is still very new thing most developers refuse to show.
and of course there is that one big thing that haunts every artistic medium there is - children. you cant harm them. people go out of their way to get offended for anything close to resemble any form of hurt for a child. remmeber the contraversy of Skyrim killable children mods? nothing new, same thing happened with fallout, the original mind you, 1998.

Yeah, how time flies. I once recommended a game from 2007 to a friend, dont remember which game, and he was like "oh im not going to play such an old game", and i was like " old? its a new one". then oh wait, its been 6 years.... wow....

10 years ago, Halo was controversial for the FPS factor.
What the heck are you talking about?

GoldenEye 007 solidified the fact that FPS could work on console, in 1997, FOUR (4!) years before Halo was released, in 2001.

What Halo did was make the Xbox attractive and prove that an American made console could do well enough to be competition to Nintendo and Sony.

I don't know about this one, it would be pretty hard to do considering Al-Queda is working very hard right now to recruit western looking people for "surprise" attacks. Speaking of which, I don't think you can get away with insulting anything muslim.

Just went on their website to look at the current "issues" they are campaigning against. Here are some excerpts:

"'Suits' Uses Jesus as a Curse Word!"

""666 Park Avenue" has been canceled after only 7 episodes! ABC announced that "666 Park Avenue" will not be coming back for a second season.

This is a HUGE Victory! The ABC series "666 Park Avenue," which is known for its controversial title and satanic content, will not be renewed. Glory to God."

"Oreo - No Longer Favorite Cookie

Send your email letter to Oreo (Kraft Foods) now! Ask that they remain neutral in the culture war versus promoting the homosexual agenda."

"Please send DC Comics (Warner Bros. Entertainment Company) and Marvel (Disney) an email urging them to change and cancel all plans of homosexual superhero characters immediately. Ask them to do the right thing and reverse their decision to have sexual orientation displayed to readers."

Sorry, just thought those were particularly idiotic 'campaigns'

OT: As it's been said before, full on rape, violence (sexual or otherwise) against children, and touchy events such as 9/11 and the Holocaust. It's OK to murder all the innocent Russian civilians, but God forbid you murder the innocent Jewish civilians in WWII. The 'pick and choose' mentality to violence, and the fear of any sexuality in games totally disgusts me.

Still can't kill kids, which is probably a good thing. Not that killing kids whill make everyone evil, it just will give idiots more ammo to claim games are evil.

There was a mod of some game a while back, I think in the Source engine, that was supposed to basically be a school shooting simulator where you play as the shooter. There was so much outcry against it that the mod was never released. So, in respect to violence in video games, it seems the line is drawn at a game being solely dedicated to slaughtering innocents.

Rayman Origins, all the new Zelda games, all the new Mario games and all the Lego games would like to disagree with you. :p

As for the actual topic, yeah, "porn". As in, genitalia. For some weird reason the idiotic "moral guardians" are completely okay with murder, torture, genocide and everything else evil imaginable in the media (not just games), but you DARE to show a penis or even a nipple, and they will lynch you for some misguided, semi-religious reason. Really, it is quite fucked up if you ask me... -.-
