So when I'm running in my dreams...

I have to run on all fours. It's fairly common to be unable to run at top speed in your dreams, I've heard plenty of people say that... But somewhere around age 13 or 14 I think, in one of my dreams I just sort of leaned forward and ran on all fours... and I was finally able to run at full speed in my dreams. I'm 20 now, and in every single dream since then, if I have to run from something, I run on all fours.

So I'm interested in A) hearing if anyone else has experienced this, and B) what you guys make of it. It's always sort of intrigued me, and I'm the only person I've met who has experienced this although I've read about some others who did. But it seems odd... I've passed various theories around in my head...

-Holdover from evolution? An animal instinct that says I'd run faster if I could utilize my arms?
-Holdover from being an infant? Seems less likely to me, given the nature of crawling but.. eh.
-Metaphorically, that I've developed better methods to running away from my problems? That sometime around age 13 or 14, I figured something out that made me better at escaping? Doesn't sound healthy if that is the case.

I should also mention that I am a huge fan of dogs.

Well running usually signifies the desire to be liberated from a nagging problem. Do you play AvP a lot?

See, the molasses thing was how it used to be, before I discovered this.. running on all fours thing. Somehow running on all fours fixed the molasses :/

I'm familiar with the general reasons for running within a dream but... not so much running on all fours within a dream.

This reminds me of a manga that addresses a similar situation called Bouko no Tyrano-san. I'm not sure of the spelling, but it involves the consciousness of dinosaurs travelling 65 million years forward to our time and finding themselves trapped in human bodies. The protagonist is Tyranosaurus Rex named Sam or Steve, and he is trapped in the body of a high school girl.

o_O

is all manga that weird?

^which, I realize sounds a bit... facetious coming from the guy who runs on all fours but.. I mean, dinosaurs in human bodies? One can't help but recall Step Brothers... "Stop being a fucking dinosaur and get a job!"

As a psychology student, admitedly one who didn't do that well, but still, I should point out that dream interpretations is remarkably inexact and possibly useless. Much of Freuds theories in fact have that kind of label. So yeah, it may mean absolutely nothing. Just mah 2 pence.

I tend to hover. (I assume this because there's no feeling or sensation of foot-motion.)

i made an account just to reply :p i am now currently 21, but a while ago, maybe a year or so, in a dream i was running from a lady who collected big cats, and i stumbled, and thought it would be a good idea to keep running on all fours, to reduce downtime from correcting myself. that opened a door i guess, cuz after that i would run on all fours a lot. for instance, last night, i had a dream i was trying to save my dream father, and i was running as fast as i could, on all fours.

I'm a fan of giant/wild cats myself. maybe they have some influence. anyway, glad to know of others experiencing this :)

also, ive noticed all the dreams in which i do this are never a negative experience. i always enjoy whatever had just transpired.

That always happens me in nightmares, when I'm trying to run and hide from someone, and I can't go fast enough to get away from them, or other people are always effortlessly faster than me. I have rather lucid dreams after a spate of nightmares involving the Scream knifeguy when I was young; if you keep dreaming about the same thing, sooner or later you'll recognise it as a dream. Maybe I should try the all-fours thing.

I also am able to run on water in most of my dreams, which is always cool.

I've never run on all fours in my dreams. The few times I can recall running at all in my dreams took no effort, I could quite easily run at full speed but on both occasions it led to my death, once by falling in front of a train and the second time by running out in front of a car. I've no idea what could cause someone to run on all fours during a dream, the mind gets up to some weird stuff is all I can say.

See, I had a witty response prepared but then I saw your post and completely forget it in lieu of the sentence "Holy shit, there's a Jeff Goldblum joke in there somewhere..."

Seriously, how the hell do people come up with stuff like that?

EDIT: My dreams... yeah... I don't ever remember them. No, really, I don't remember any dream I've had for a very long time. If I do remember a dream, it will be hazy and the memories will run away from me as I try to grasp them. It will all just disappear. I hate it and at the same time it's a bit of a blessing, considering how actively my own imagination hated me as a child.
life...er, finds a way.

Well, I don't really know what's going on with your dreams, but until such things start to bleed into reality, you're not mad. Hell, you should see my dreams. I rarely run in my dreams, and if I do it's usually towards something, not away from somewhere. And if I do run away, it tends to be from myself. That's the point at which things get really complicated.
