So, will you be participating in "Ceasefire friday"?

Nope, only heard of it here, seems pointless really, more an admission of some guilt than anything, it's not like there's a massive outcry against games or anything.

Wait, have games/gamers been targeted that much by this stuff that now we just assume everything thinks we're to blame, like someone that got punished for something that wasn't their fault one too many times?

I'm already done with farcry and i have no desire to pickup another shooter anytime soon, so i'll play some need for speed in honor of all the drunk drivers that died on friday's.

That's why I always keep the squad of Mech Nobz near them to defend against would be melee.

According to my soulstorm campaign I've killed 4954 sentient beings thus far and the Waaagh has eliminated all races on Kaurava 2, 4, and all their moons.

I don't know about you, but it'd take me much longer than two days to kill that many in an FPS.

It's not a blame of video games.
It's saying that maybe using mass murder with guns as entertainment might not be in very good taste given recent events, and it might do some good to raise awareness that the real use of these things isn't so happy.
For me, I think I'll be playing Recettear.
Please forgive me ahead of time for getting mad about this.

Google "Syria" go to the news section, and feast your eyes.

If that's not enough, now google "Syria children", feast your eyes again.

If you can't be arsed to do that, I'll highlight a few headlines.

"Syrian refugee children are dying"

"Children in Syria are paying a very high price"

"Syrian refugee camps filled with child deaths."

"6 children killed by Car bomb"

"10 Children killed by cluster bomb."

^And all that? Took place in less than a month from today. And this has been going on for years.
I've seen literal videos of these things happening. You can search this stuff for yourself, if you can stomach it, and see with your own eyes.

So I ask you, I ask ANYONE who is taking part in this 'ceasefire'. Why now? Were you aware of what is happening in Syria? And if you were, did you even once consider 'showing respect' by not playing violent videogames?

Seems to me like you're picking and choosing exactly which horrendous tragic event to "show respect to".

I know you people mean well by taking part in this gesture. I'm not trying to attack or tear down any of you. But I can't help but look at this gesture, and feel grossly offended, because of all the tragedies of the exact same kind taking place worldwide, and not even acknowledging them.

So in my defense, this isn't me being some heartless spiteful bastard that cannot give up his violent videogames. This is me looking at this gesture/movement/whathaveyou, and thinking it is asinine.
Did you really just pull an it-could-be-worse argument? Yes that is tragic, but that problem does not invalidate the tragedy that many Americans are experiencing. How dare you use tragedy to invalidate sympathy.

But the shooter played GAMES! That's why he was EVIL!

Also we shouldn't play games to show solidarity with the victimz!

What do you mean it doesn't make sense? Of course if we don't do something we enjoy so that some of us will feel good about themselves briefly before going back to Battlefield..12? and CoD 9.

Tony2077 said:

^ thank you. I'll be refraining from being a psychotic armed lunatic on friday, to show solidarity with the victims. Like I do every other day.

I addressed this in the very post you seem to have skipped over.

1300+ word post in a forum? I bet no one skipped over any of it.

I don't think that you understand what mainstream media's power over gaming is. It is irrelevant that we don't give a shit what fox (who own IGN btw) says.

Politicians and the Public do, and they are the ones who can stop us enjoying what we like.

An admission of guilt (I will cheerfully bet you $5,000 that this is the spin that will happen), will be railroaded into the minds of people and we'll see more restrictions on games.

So this is why I refuse to participate in this thing.

Also see above for how I choose to show solidarity.

I am playing Orks... which strangely enough have the best ranged unit in the game.
Objection, a tactical marine squad armed with max. rocket launchers is the best ranged unit xD. The unit you mention, which one is that?
The Flash Gitz!

There is not one ranged unit in the game that can compare to the firepower those guys can lay down. Two (max) squads of those can gun down the non-tank super units in less than 15 seconds.

If you don't use flight units to get behind the ork lines and engage the gitz in melee, I'm not sure how you'd beat an Ork rush.
Oh god, bad memories coming back >.>. While they are counterable, nothing a squad of max. Assault Marines can't handle, it's pretty damn hard. As much as I hate going against them, I love using them when playing as an Ork.

Can you get assault terminators in that game?

Yes, we've turned a thread about playing whatever the hell you want on Friday into "what's the best way to massacre a mob of orks?"
Yup, but they're quite slow and late-tier. It'll be an all out battle where Flash Gitz aren't the worst you can face, *cough*Squigoth*cough.* Of course I'll be rocking the Land Raider and the Dreadnoughts ;).

I don't really play shooters much. I may or may not end up playing BlOps2 on Friday as per request of a friend but I don't play shooters for 90% of the days in a year. Unless 3rd person counts, then maybe it is more like 60%. Gotta say though, this is a pretty dumb idea. Everyone knows that RTS's like Starcraft is what causes violence. FPS causes rapists. I thought everyone knew that.
I hesitate to ask what third person hack n slash n gun causes.

OT: Well, it seems like a pleasant idea, but I won't be taking part. Whether I play a shooter or not will depend on if I fancy playing a shooter.
According to FOX, those are porn simulators thus causes perverts.

Eh I've seen better but yes, that is a lot of work for one model. Of course the heavy melta is only as good as the number on the dice-rolled ;). Lucky for me, Dawn of War doesn't use a dice-roll system :p.

This need to spite a perfectly decent movement with nothing but good intentions. The need to rub your shit in the faces of sympathetic gamers by saying "I'm going to play more COD/Manhunt/GTA just to show 'em" it's despicable. If you don't particularly care for the Ceasefire idea, that's fine. But to deliberately try to undermine a movement which is doing nothing but promoting the idea than gamers can be non-violent, by going out and enjoying more digital violence... can you not see what a spectacular own fucking goal you've just scored.

You've just reinforced the idea that your own pleasure derived from online violence is much more important to you than empathy for your fellow man. That you are completely unwilling, even if it means that gamers for once collectively come together to achieve something good, to forego one day's worth of online multiplayer. That one day of cheap pleasure is far more important to you than the entire gaming community perhaps making a collective statement that brings a message of positivity and goodwill.

You're reinforcing every negative stereotype that FOX News could ever throw out there about gamers: that you cannot overcome your desire for violence to show community with your fellow man. You've booted the ball, and it's now flying past the goalie's fingers into your own net.
Pretty damn much what I was thinking, eloquently stated. Well done.

Man... just think about it. Imagine if it wasn't just that one guy in that video condemning violence. I could tell he's sincere in his speaking. But just imagine if he was joined by dozens of other people. Gamers of all different kinds of ethnicity, and nationalities, all speaking together to condemn violence, perhaps in their own native languages even - All banding together because of one thing they have in common, they're gamers. How incredible would such a gesture be?
That's the idea. Millions if not billions of people around the world saying in one voice, "we will reject violence for one day". Only the celebration of Christmas has ever accomplished anything like that, needing centuries after the relevant events to impact globally. (regardless of what anyone believes about Christmas specifically or religion in general, these are historical facts and cannot be denied.)

Sadly, it is still my belief that what Ceasefire is currently aiming for, is just not enough.

Thanks for taking the time to try to make me understand, 2x. Believe it or not, I appreciate it.
Baby steps, friend. People have been trying to "solve" world violence during pretty much all of recorded history. Musicians did things exactly like this through their media in the last few generations, and authors and artists for generations before that. A group of gamers united by their art, no matter how numerous or well-intentioned, aren't going to end violence completely either. To think otherwise would be naive.

However, unlike previous iterations, ours is the first ever true global community. We can reach everywhere there is free, uncensored internet, and rally together at a moment's notice. We have the opportunity to send a very powerful message here, and this one message of peace need not be the end of a movement.

PS. ...f***ing hippies. heh.

How about instead of not playing shooters, we decide not to view any sensationalist News stories about murder that do nothing but incite panic.

Wishing no disrespect to the victims, and more so to honor them, I will be getting together with friends and playing through Left 4 Dead 2 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Community and friendship is more important, especially when gun control and mental illness and alienation are the greater problems in America.

Gotta be honest, you're right.
Media doesn't care about foreign problems, because "20 kindergarteners dead in CT" gets more ratings than "cluster bomb in Syria." As sick and twisted as it sounds, the second one makes sense to the average viewer. We hear these things and it fits our international stereotypes.
They barely tell us what's happening in Syria, because it's more profitable to show the Kardashians than a dozen children get blown up over there. There is no news of this reaching us.
Politicians and prominent people can't use the news in Syria for their own agendas, but a school shooting is a perfect example to them on the evils of video games and modern culture as opposed to their "down to earth upbringings from a better time."

No, to me this is a kind of lazy mans activism. It's like Movember. Yes, I get that it's supposed to raise awareness for colon cancer or something, but it doesn't actually do anything. We all know what it is and that we're trying to find a cure, but what the fuck is growing your beard actually going to do? Nothing.

If you want to make a difference, actually do something about it. Don't sit back and grow your beard and pat yourself on the back, because you've accomplished nothing aside from make yourself look like a douche.

The same goes for this cease fire. Telling people to not play games with guns wont change a damn thing, aside from bore people for a day. Or, in the case of this thread, cause people to be spiteful.
