Apparently the playable character in the next COD game will have a face:

Does anybody have any thoughts on this? I personally prefer it when a FPS character doesn't have a face and a voice; it lets you construct your own character in your mind, even if you don't do it consciously.

Soap McTavish did get a voice and a face, and I don't really think it was that different.

So, while I do enjoy silent protagonists, I think this might work just fine.

Yes, but he got an appearance after you played as him. You got the impression that so much had happened between COD4 and MW2 that he had turned into this unprecedented baddass, and that was represented on screen. But you're right, and I had totally forgotten about that.

I think it's different when you have to play as a specific character though. The game is telling you what he looks like, what he sounds like, how he acts and reacts in situations, and you're playing through him, rather than as him. I don't know, for me I think it makes a difference.

Yes... it might work... and that confuses me. It confuses me a whole damn lot. I am on the other side of the fence of the modern day shooter franchise, and Black Ops and all that talk about identifying with a character is putting notions of purchasing it into my fragile head.

I'm scared...

Personally, I hate it when the character you play as doesn't speak at all. No one in their right mind would be silent when they witness a helicopter crash land 50 feet away from you.

Now I make a few exceptions to that rule (i.e. Gordan Freeman), but I like my character that I play as to at least have some type of personality. Silent protagonists are something that have been held over from the 20th century, in my opinion.

Why give an exception to Half Life though? Because it's Half Life? I think the point of a silent protagonist is so that you as a player react, rather than watching your character react.

I'll totally help you.

[small]It's Call Of Duty, buy it. Then buy every single game of the franchise.[/small]

No, I'm just kidding. The part about "indentifying with the character is going to be decent at best, arbitrary at worst.

Call Of Duty is not a drama, it's a Holywood flick. If films like The Rock never interested you in the slightest, neither should this.

In Half Life, I think the secondary are more interesting than Gordan Freeman, hence why I tend to focus on them more. That and Half-Life is more gameplay oriented Plus, giving Freeman a voice would just be weird. Kind of like how they gave Samus a voice.....

Man, you are not helping. The Rock is one of my favorite movies. You just made this worse...

Freeman worked simply because of the way Valve designed the scenes.

Black Ops can make this work too, if handled correctly.

Someone mentioned a helicopter crash: I wouldn't want to listen to my character say 'shit' twenty times in response to that.
(i.e. most obvious response)

Really? Then buy it.

It's going to be a Hollywood flick, just like Modern Warfare 2 was (my favorite game of all-time), just like The Rock was (my favorite movie of all-time). Loud, explosive, well-orchestrated and with good music.

Okay, um... then wait for the reviews.

It's Treyarch, after all. Solid coop guaranteed and the multiplayer's probably going to be fine, too, but the SP might just be a frustrating mess.

But when you're playing something where you are the character and not playing through a character, and that helicopter crashes, you (the player) are the one to shout something outside of the game. You might shout something or at least think something in reaction. "Wow! That helicopter just crashed and exploded!" ... or expletives.

They don't really need the player character shouting as well do they?

Because co-op is pretty easy; because they just steal Infinity Ward's multiplayer; and because they have to do that bit themselves.

Why would anyone want to steal Infinity Ward's multiplayer?

Because it made three-hundred-and-ten million dollars. In one day.

That was extremely good marketing, not extremely good multiplayer.

It doesn't matter, they're not gonna argue with over a billion dollars total worldwide sales.
