If you want cosmetics for any of the free DLC heroes you'll have to shell out $10 for the battle pass to get the ability to earn cosmetics, and every character has their own battle pass, so it's $10 per character.

That might be the most money grubbing thing I've ever seen, even if it is just cosmetic.

I'd say I wasn't going to buy it now, but I was already planning on never buying it.

Originally it was just because it looked bog standard and boring(the wierd off-brand looking faces didn't help either) but now it's reaching into being a grab bag of shitty corporate practices as well.

I am not surprised in the slightest. I hope you're reading this @CriticalGaming. This is the shit we were talking about. It seems you're the only one I could rely on now, Miles.

To steal a post from another board;

"The developer goes on to say that if you reach the maximum tier, you will eventually earn all of your Credits back. These Hero Challenge Cards won't be replaced either, meaning you have all the time in the world to unlock everything they have to offer. Theoretically, if you complete all of the six Hero Challenge Cards for the base superheroes, you won't have to spend any money on Credits for a significant amount of time."

So the base six are free and earn you credits which you can use to unlock others....which will then earn you more credits to unlock others....and the characters themselves are free.

That's kind of better? Still completely disrespectful of the players time.

I don't really have a horse in this race though.

I guess SE have to make up for not doing so with FF7R, but then again they did have that Nestle tie-in where you had to buy a bunch of candy bars to get dlc items.

The game always had a funny smell to it, and it’s not surprising it’s a generic AF looking thing banking on its movie tie-in.

This is just another example of pushing the boundaries to see what customers will put up with and put out for. Not long ago you were encouraged to pay to skip the grind, now they want you to pay to just unlock the grind...otherwise you gotta super grind to unlock the grind. That's so videogames! (Also this very much explains why none of the loot has any visual change on any characters; they want you paying extra for that shit.)
Obligatory reminder that the artificially split-in-two narrative of Deus Ex had its conclusion binned for this cynical tripe.

Edit: am gonna edge in on Brawlman's turf while they're not around at mo and link the topical Jim video to this (just send payment in the post, no rush needed!)

Hey when they announced Costumes feature mobile service companies like verizon and at&t I knew this was going to be Microtransaction dogshit.

Then playing the Beta, I knew it was going to be microtransaction trash.

I still think that if Spider-man being Sony only was the only thing they were doing it would be fine. I hold myself to that.

But the rest of this, and top it all off with the gameplay actually sucking ass, yeah this game is a dumpster fire.

No worries. Someone must spread the word.

God, it's like they are following every cash-grabbing trends.
  • Console exclusive contents? Check
  • RNG loots? Check
  • Battle Pass? Check
  • Microtransactions? Check
I wonder what's next? Lootboxes using Stark Industries name, $10 extra for a next-gen upgrade, or subscription model that would even further paywall people?

Ok I'm going to step in and play Devil Advocate a bit. I haven't pre-ordered the game. I advise people read reviews and watch others play and make up your mind after launch

This is based on what I've heard

Actually kind of good news
  • Battle Passes are NOT timed. You have infinite time to complete the Battle Pass so in this context it's actually not forcing you to play to or lose that possible content.
  • Each of the 6 characters (Thor, Ms Marvel, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Iron Man) will have a FREE premium Battle pass track unlocked for users
  • Each of the 6 FREE premium battle passes will have as their final reward enough credits to buy 1 Premium Battle Pass for another character.
  • Each post launch Hero will be FREE for everyone but will come with a Free track and a Premium Track Battlepass.
The Actual bad stuff
  • From people who have Played the BETA the motion blur is awful
  • Possible performance issues
  • Possible netcode issues
  • Gear system
  • Gameplay balance and class system E.G. as some-one put it (I forget who) "Something feels wrong when I can punch something and the hulk and only do the same damage and Black Widow punching it" like I get there's going to have to be some balancing so no-one feels they're getting screwed over by their character choice but it feels like they might have an issue with making the characters powerful in their own ways like say maybe Black Widow does less damage but can pile in hits quicker or use gadgets to aid her more or something
  • Sony exclusive Spiderman
  • No auto looting you have to find and open the chests etc rather than just run by them by the sounds of things.
Look I'm dubious as to how the game will go but the way I'm looking at it and thinking the plan might be is this is trying to be a sort of Marvel version of Warframe and if they pull it off and if the game actually is ok to start with then it could really do well.

I mean, thats there two biggest problems there.

Taking the Warframe example. Avenger's big problem is none of the characters stand out beyond the flying ability on a couple. Everyone plays like a basic brawler outside of their ultimate (if they're lucky).

And the gear is all basically invisble background stats, Its got the rubbish Destiny "average power level" mechanic, other then maybe high power level won't just be downscaled like Destiny's is (couldn't tell in the beta cause there's not enough ranges).. It doesn't modfiy out the characters gameplay options in any way.

Even to scrape *up* to Destiny's level. They'd have to do some kind of variants on heroes or something. Like different suits for Iron Man with different abilities, the varying incarnations of Thor, etc. Which is a tough job when you get into some of the potential roster who haven't had too many unique incarantions to pull from.

My interest in this game has basically been a rollercoaster.

I was excited when it was announced, but a bit confused that it was Square Enix.

I was disappointed when I first saw the game, because it basically looked like bargain basement MCU - which is a sentiment that I still hold.

I was actually very excited when they revealed the content in the beta, and to the game's credit, it actually looked like a lot of fun.

Then basically as soon as they announced that Spider-Man was going to be a PS4/5 exclusive, it has gone downhill from there, and now it is at rock bottom.

I got early beta access, because of that strange promotion with Verizon/Virgin Media, but when it actually came down to it, honestly, I was just so pooped out, and I couldn't be bothered.

Now there is this, and well, whatever.

The game itself actually looks like a lot of fun, but there are so many behind the scenes deals and handshakes, and then there is this whole microtransaction bullshit, and it has just ultimately compromised what could have been a very fun Avengers game.

Its a shame, really.

I wonder - is anyone actually still excited for this game?
