Even though the quote was from an official novel, the novel does not mean it shares the exact same readers as the forums for the franchise. As such, I completely understand their ruling since they must accommodate for the whole (children and adults alike.)
This.
You could have easily written "Stupid Sh*t." It's a small difference, but it's polite.
Some forums don't mind swearing, others do. It's just good manners to censor it unless you know for certain that it's not frowned upon.
The fact that you're quoting something changes nothing.
I completely disagree. The day a forum mod asks me to censor a direct quote is the day I'm lodging a complaint and making my exit from this site. It's unacceptable that words like "shit" and "fuck" have to be censored in the 21st century.
Even if children are using the forums in question? Which century we are in is irrelevant if a parent does not want their child exposed to swear words.
Most forums will have a user base that is mostly adult and so this is not an issue, but many forums out there are likely to have people access them who are not fans of swearing, or younger then most users.
I'm wondering what kind of child is going to be using a freaking Battletech Forum. Most kids too young for swearing have probably never even heard about it. Same goes for this website. You need to be a teenager to join, and that means that you have been exposed to swearing before.
It depends on the context of the site.[/quote]

Well in that context, this is an over reaction from the mod, certainly in regards to the ban. Even if the mod had an issue with it, a PM would have done the job.

I've never heard of Battletech so I didn't know the age group it was aimed at.

I agree OP. You should not have been banned for that.

Also case in point: Geist4life's post. I do not understand why it was moderated. What rule did it break? Seriously. I don't think it should've warranted any mod action. In fact, I think it was reported by someone who had an axe to grind, which is pretty easy to do since the rules are so broad and overly subjective here.

I've left forums before over disagreements with the mods. On one, the only forum where I've ever been banned (and it was a tempban too), I left because my ban was completely unjustified and I felt I'd been treated unfairly in general the entire time. When they tempbanned me, they said I'd posted NSFW images after being asked to stop. I had neither posted such images, nor been asked to stop.

I sort of see your point. I don't understand why age-13 rules are applied to forums such as say, the TESNexus forums, when all the games it supports are rated above that, and the site openly hosts nudity and sex simulation mods.
The staff at Nexus has explained that before. And anyway there's no foolproof way to verify age. Yeah, they went and made the Supporter image share thing, but they can't do that for the mod section because it might be seen as charging for mods and run them into legal trouble.

Donno why they can't make a Supporter section of the forums with more relaxed rules though. The moderation on the forums there isn't really what I have a problem with over at Nexus. It's the moderation of the files. They're quick to ban modders for files they even think were illegal. For instance, there's the modder who made a children's clothing pack. One moderator didn't like the look of some of the clothes and labeled it child porn and banned the modder. This moderator was well known to be sexist and against any child mod in general, not to mention disliking anything that wasn't for her own hunky man mod. The second instance was a body/race mod for Oblivion that a particularly flaky moderator took offense too because she thought it looked like a child and couldn't accept that hey, not everyone develops the same way... after that incident I swore off Nexus and removed my images and decided never to ever upload any mod I created there.

It started out as a Tabletop War Game in 1994, focusing on Mech Combat. Outside of the novels and models, most people are aware of its offshoot Mech Warrior.

I think it's asinine and they should remove the warning. I dislike the fact warnings don't have a expiration date if you don't receive any more after X amount of time as well.
I'm assuming this comment is directed at the escapist (I apologize if I'm mistaken). If that is the case, I recommend you read the forum rules.
[HEADING=3]Amnesty[/HEADING]
After every 6 months without any warnings, you will drop down one level on the Forum Health Meter. After 2 years without any warnings, your meter will be returned to 0, regardless of where it was before.

These adjustments don't apply to any users that have been permanently banned, and they don't remove the history that the moderators can see on your account. Anyone that is seen "gaming the system" will be held accountable for it.

Totally made my day, man. Thanks!

OT: Sometimes, the mod is sour and pedantic. Usually, they don't stick around long.

It really depends upon the general user base of the forum how harsh the mods need to be.

If you're in a forum where kids frequent you might wanna consor it a bit just to please the gods, but i really can't think of anyone on the internet who doens't already know the basic swear words. And why is "shit" considered a swear anyways? I can think of tons of worse words than that. Won't list them here 'cause i'm not entirely sure what the Escapist CoC says about swearing.

Anyways, i think it was a way too harsh punishment, but sadly if they won't listen to you there's not much to do about it but wait until the ban lifts.

Why did Giest4life get a warning for that post above?
The administration prefers that users with complaints (normally because they don't agree with the rules in place) take the issue up with the staff instead of ranting about it in threads.
We do get quite a few threads consisting of a user whining about a probation or warning they received. It almost always turns out to be because said user did not read the forum rules. And no: you not agreeing with the forum rules is not an excuse not to follow them.
Actually, he was insulting us and the reasoning behind our actions.

Ah, yes. There's that.
Seems to me, more often than not, penalty-complaints tends to include attacks on site staff.
