Well thankfully both of my parents now can operate a computer in the capacity that they need. Which is to say "email and Internet, maybe Word". This took years of careful tutelage though, and they still don't really trust me when I make improvements. Paradoxically I'm apparently the only one who can set up a computer or computer accessory (which I always say is basically just plugging things into the holes they fit).
They always used to blame me when computer problems arose. But since I've got my own laptop I always say: "I download and run more stuff on my computer than you probably ever will and it always works better than the computers you use." Being rational people they see the facts.
My brother isn't much better, but at least he knows how to install something and navigate the file system (and uses Firefox).

A little standard here, if someone's not a teenage boy/young man they either can't do shit with computers/don't know shit OR they (like my dad) can do stuff, but are slow as hell at doing it, always picking the most complicated/stupid/unnecessary way to do it.
Seriously though, that's how I feel it's like. My grandma for example couldn't read all that was written in mails she got, so I checked it out. It was just that the window had been moved a bit out to the side so all wasn't on the screen. Another example was when me and my dad were to help them fix Skype. Ever tried to find a still working version of Skype for WINDOWS 95??? At least we found a really old version that still worked... BUT STILL, 95??? And they had problems with finding stuff in folders and such. And they're using 95... =.="

Buying your parents a Mac is a bad thing? My mother loves her Macbook, and instead of using a computer only a few times a month, she uses it almost every day now. Not to mention, its a lot harder for the computer illiterate to mess up a Macbook with viruses 'n what not. I've never had her have any trouble with trying to use PC programs; most anything she wants to use has a mac version.Sebenko said:

Someone in my church thought her computer would explode (literally) if she was missing a cable. The missing cable was a VGA cable to the monitor from the tower, and she had the DVI cable plugged in so the the VGA cable would be redundant.

My dad, while generally pretty tech-savvy, uses the "hunt/peck" method of typing and it drives me up the wall to no end. (Then again, we can't all be the 90wpm elite like me...)

I am kinda the same way in my own family. Though usually the only thing I've ever had a problem with is the strange attraction to IE. I've tried for years to get my mother to use Firefox, but she believes in IE. I don't understand why IE is still being used, just the other day I "overheard" someone saying that IE is the most stable and fastest browser. The person talked about how insecure Firefox was, and how glitchy Chrome is. I was utterly speechless, and I had thought I was overhearing a Microsoft salesman talk. Nope, it was some middle aged women who was acting the part of computer genius to her friend.
Back when I first used a computer, I went into a weird folder and deleted some stuff to "make it look all tidy."
... I deleted some stuff in the main folder. After we turned it off it wouldn't start up again properly. xD We had to reset it to factory settings somehow.
My bad...

I had a friend do that, he somehow managed to delete system32.
I am a computer engineer, so even my school teachers ask for help. The best time was arriving 30 mins late because my motor bike broke down, and he let me off for helping him with his laptop issues. I simply told him to get a new one.
It really annoys me though that people will come running straight to me without even trying the simplest of actions. Most of the time its as simple as CTRL-ALT-Delete

I once spent 30 minutes trying to teach my grandad how to double click. It was a brutal hell...First three times he clicked the right-mouse button. The rest of the time his finger either slipped off the mouse or he clicked wrongly. It was fun but irratitating.

He manages to screw it up even more than windows. He's had it reformatted twice in the couple of years he's had it. I must admit, the thought did cross my mind. Thing is, it would not have been tactful to do so. A random stranger coming up and correcting a friend, would have had no base of influence. Who would her friend believe? A random stranger, or her friend. It just wouldn't help anything in the end.
