Ever hear the start of a song and think it's a completely different song and band altogether there, there a few songs the I get mixed up. But these two in particular always remind me of each other.

And this absolute rip off.

Well my coworker was listening to some crappy music from some guy named Lupe Fiasco and one song sounded VERY similar to "Float On" by Modest Mouse.

When the song came on the stereo at work I thought maybe his CD had finished and it had gone to something good. Sadly, I realized that it was just this talentless hack stealing sounds.

Thank you sir.
I've just played them both through. Isn't it amazing how a song about the lack of difference between different songs can have so much difference between live and recorded versions?

So many words repeated there. My brain hurts.

Every time I start humming or whistling Saria's Song [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVlqk9yZf2c], my mum somehow confuses it for the Postman Pat theme [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAYVfmSig0I].

Knowing rappers he probably just sampled it and sped it up.

Yeah I realize that they do it a lot nowadays, but as far as I know there's not even any credit given to the original artist as my coworker was insistent that Lupe Fiasco (I hate that name with a passion, btw) was some music god of originality until I pulled up Modest Mouse and rubbed it all over his face.

Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" sounds awfully like an instrumental part of John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane". Don't believe me? Listen:

(The part starts at about 46 seconds into the song)

VERY similar, in fact!

Also, the chorus to the Genesis songs "Ripples" and "Fading Lights" are damn near the same. However, since they're both by the same group, it's not like the stole it.

I'm always getting dejavu feelings when listening to certain songs

I may me mistaken but I swear whenever this next song is playing I start singing Friday I'm in Love by The Cure because the guitar riff sound so similar. Well I hope so anyway, otherwise I'm hearing things again.

To be fair, that is FAR and away one of the worst songs off of Lupe's worst album. I don't have any explanation for it; I guess it was studio pressure or maybe he really did think it was a good idea to abandon musical integrity.

Lupe Fiasco is definitely not a "talentless hack", though. His first two albums are some of the best hip-hop records ever made, and I can't think of another musician who matches his lyrical depth. He's a genuine virtuoso. One of his trademarks is to tell two or even three stories at once, using words with multiple meanings. That he can do that and have it all rhyme and match a rhythm isn't something a "talentless hack" can do.

OT: Nickelback's discography.

Yeah, a lot of pop songs (particularly rap/R&B) tend to sample older hits, for example this:

Takes a cue from this Chi-Lites song:

This recent song I've been hearing off hand on the radio copies the bass line from The Stone Roses song Fools gold:

-_- Whilst ironically proclaiming how original he is...also, here's that riff Nirvana (probably unconsciously to be fair) plagiarised from Killing Joke:

Probably a few others, but I can't be arsed to think and I really should be sleeping...

I found two songs that use the EXACT same sample tune. First, I give you Desnudame by Achillea (ignore the awkward music video, tune starts at 0:24. You only have to listen for 10 seconds or so to hear it):

Now, I give youI Know by Hybrid.

Just about blew my mind when I figured it out.

In something that's not a sample,
I swear it's the same guitar chords! I'm not referring to the beat, that'd be silly.
