There were rumors, but nobody was expecting another mainline Sonic game to come out this year. I know everyone is still bummed about the Sonic Mania Team being screwed over. I 1000% agree, but I am willing to give this game a chance.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I have yet to enjoy a 2d sonic game. I like the look, I like the music, but I never like the gameplay. I didn't even like Sonic Mania, played it enough to beat it but at best I just thought it was ok.

Sonic Mania I always found okay and really over hyped by people (Matt Simmons, Pat, and Yahtzee) who don't like 3D Sonic/Team Sonic games. I like mania, but my main problem was that it's spends too many times rehashing old levels for half the game. Sure they are done with interesting twists, but you're still reusing old levels. You can blame that specifically on the executives at Sega. The Mania Team wanted more original levels, but the executives wouldn't budge. I do wish for this one to be good and I have an interest in playing.

I guess really when it comes down to it, the only Sonic game I've really enjoyed was Sonic Adventure/Battle 2 and I wouldn't call that a good game.

Kinda weird that I absolutely love Freedom Planet 1/2 considering how 2d sonic adjacent their gameplay is.

SA2/B is a good game. Some parts have not aged well, mainly the sound mixing, but it's better than SA1 (that game has aged even worse), Sonic Heroes, Sonic Unleashed (the HD versions), and the Sonic Story Book Duology.

Nothing wrong with that. It makes sense as Freedom Planet was a Sonic fan game at one point. I have yet to play any of the FP games at all.

BTW, for you.

Yeah and the Taxman helped them with Freedom Planet 2. If you like 2d sonic games then you need to give them a shot. But... I do wonder what a sonic fan would think of them, as I said, I don't like any of the 2d sonic games so maybe the difference in how they play wouldn't translate for a fan.

I do know majority of Sonic fans love the Freedom Planet games. I rarely hear any complaints from them on either title.

Reviews are rolling out. They're fairly mixed, averaging out to about a 75 on the review aggregators as of this writing.
Most liked the general gameplay, visuals and new level themes, but the multiplayer features a recurring point of criticism.

Also bit worrisome all the reviews were for PS5 and major Nintendo focused outlets like Nintendolife did not receive review codes, but

Aside from the obvious visual downgrade, it seems to run quite well.

I don't pay too much attention when it comes to critics reviewing Sonic games. Most of them have an axe to grind to begin with.

That on the other hand is concerning. I'm glad it runs well, but I really wish Sega would stop doing stuff like this.

Sonic Advance 2 (The one with Blaze).
That's Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure. Blaze is not in any of the Sonic Advance games.

How does it compare to classic Sonic?
So far Superstars is up there with Sonic 2 and Sonic3&K. It feels like the true classic Sonic 4 everyone was waiting for. Though some fans call it Sonic 5, as Sonic Mania acts as Sonic 4 to certain fans. I do admit it's a little early, but I enjoy this game so much more than Mania. Mania wasn't bad, but there weren't enough original levels, and everything felt rehashed. That can be blamed on Sega and not the Mania Team.

Superstars actually has original levels with interesting gimmicks, and feels like an expansive version of 3. What I like are quality of life improvements to the Genesis Trilogy (even compared to modern ports that added additional convivences and improvements to the player). It's a bit easier to enter special zones to get Chaos Emeralds, there's no lives/game over system and just checkpoints when you do die (something Sega took from the Rayman games since Forces), level select at any time, and getting a Chaos Emerald nets you a unique power up. So far I've gotten three of them. My only gripe with the powers is there being no quick select options with the shoulder buttons nor triggers. You have bring up power wheel with the R3. You don't have to press it, but it's awkward when running and you usually have to stop when brining it up. Another problems is the game felt slippery at times, so I turned the sensitivity to 3, and that solved the issue for me.

I've been only playing as Sonic, but you can select whatever character you want, as soon as you start the game or re-entering the save file. There's 5 save, files by the way.

Music is good too, but I have not completed the game yet to get a full assessment. I just stopped at the Pinball Stage last night and will play more later today.

Seriously though, this game is the Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze of Sonic games. Otherwise, I like this game more than Frontiers too.

Mhm, mhm. Sounds promising. Ok. I'll give it a try later.
