There's no shame in saying Mortal Kombat 1995 is a good film. It is good and one of the best. Glad to see another fan. I admit that I've warmed up to this trailer a bit more. It definitely looks better than the first trailer of the first movie. As long as the human characters are not in as much, I'll consider watching it. The main focus should be on Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Dr Robotnik too, but that should be the sum of it. Maybe Amy will get a cameo towards the end or after the credits. That I don't have a problem with.

I think we're at least at a stage where a video game adaptation is longer a guarantee to be bad.

I say just go ham on the whackiness Sonic is known for. Like my perfect post credit scene is Eggman angry being defeated again like flips over a book case in some Jim Carey way but by movie magic finds a journal from his grandpappy Gerald and opens it with the first page reading "Project Shadow"

That would be one hell of a coincidence given this movie's continuity (in the games, they more or less treated Sonic and Eggman's family as from the same world, unlike the movie).

Me personally, I prefer they adapt Sonic CD for the next movie after this one, but that works too.

Tails sounds like Tails. Sonic doesn't sound or speak anything like Sonic. Have the filmmakers even looked at an echidna? The toon and video game version of Knuckles have hair better resembling the needles than the fury hairs in this CG design.

WTF are all these hairs? Still bland, the hyper detail of the CG designs. I thought that first movie was bad.

Why they couldn't bother getting Roger Craig Smith back to voice Sonic is beyond me. The newer guy is okay, but it's because I've gotten used to him. Besides, Sonic has always sound different. It's just a matter of who you are used to hearing, and how their performance stacks up. I still say dubbing of Sonic and Tails from the OVA has the worst voice by default. They sound like they both have nasal allergies.

For the couple of seconds we see him, Knuckles actually looks good in motion. Idris definitely has a fitting and intimidating voice. I'd say the CG photos here don't him justice.

Agreed. There was no reason for it to take place in the real world; let alone Montana! I don't know why Hollywood continues to take characters that were never meant to be in the "real" world or realistic keep doing this. Rocky and Bullwinkle, Underdog, Woody the Woodpecker, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Smurfs, and now Clifford too! We want to watch the characters in animation of 2D or 3D in their respective worlds. Not in our boring fucking world where the same cliche happens and all of these scripts are stealing from each other!

The sequel looks better by comparison, but still will come off as (slightly above) average at best. Just take place in Sonic's World or Mobius! The Sonic games actually do take place on Earth (lore and backstory from the Japanese versions of the games. Sonic Adventure 1 was when they made it official in the US and Western releases), but with way more abstract and fantastical elements. If and when the third movie gets produced, should they actually put it in Mobius and adapt Sonic CD! I'll actually whoop with joy! Hell, I wanna see a planet that bends time and space! Anything is better than having these characters run around Montana or some other American metropolis.

I've just never heard Sonic sound so... comedic and goofy. Even Jaleel White managed to make him sound cool and smug. I didn't even really like the things he said. Like the humor that will be irrelevant in ten years or admitting to being lonely and stuff. That whole sad part of his character felt so antithetical to Sonic, and weirdly serious.

I know they used photographic Earth because average moviegoers would find Mobius too alien and weird. Most would prefer to watch things that are familiar. But yeah, it all made the movie much blander than it could have been and made the CG design of Sonic stick out more. I'm not a fan of any of the tall, long-haired versions of Sonic anyway. Sonic used to be drawn like a kids cartoon character, not unlike Mickey Mouse. The end credits were a sore reminder of that.

This is an artist.

I can't even find the character designer of the first movie. So there's the equivalent to Mister Yuda, a bunch of executives and twenty different designers, not one stopping to ask what a cartoon version of an echidna should look like. Really furry needles? Get the fuck out of here.

Which I think is a bullshit justification producers and executives use to be lazy. The audience can handle it, you guys and gals at the top are just stupid and greedy. With all the crazy shit that happens in the Marvel films, and both Guardians of the Galaxy movies (one with a talking sentient planet!), most people can handle Mobius or the Earth from the Sonic Adventure games. A little abstraction ain't gonna hurt the kids, teens, or adults. Unless you're an insecure douche or philistine. Abstraction is a bonus at times; especially for films aimed at kids. When used right of course.

I will give credit for trying to use more elements from the games: The characterization of how Knuckles started, a more blend of Sonic Adventure, and just how the action looks. They're definitely putting in more effort at least. This movie I will give a chance, so I'll pray for the best.

I don't think the movie or the games are terribly concerned with making Knuckles look that much like a real echidna.

In fairness, the Earth in the MCU is pretty normal, with the superhumans being the things that stand out the most. So, the Sonic is kind of like that.

Granted, people can accept settings that aren't Earth as you mentioned, but that is a huge gamble if you're not part of a major franchise like Star Wars or the MCU.

It's a dilemma.

Mister Yuda came closer, though. You can see what he intended with Knuckles' hairs as a cartoonist. Sega didn't call them a hedgehog, fox and echidna for nothing. Paramount's needles are covered in so many wiry hairs that they don't even look like needles.

Not that normal; especially this late in the franchise now. Also, there is a reason why I mentioned the GoG specifically. You have a talking tree and a mutant raccoon, they were already taking risks when that was first brought to the silver screen.

It was not much of a huge gamble in the 80s and 90s. The mid 2000s...somewhat, but it did not last that long. Paramount can do it, they just want to out of laziness. Not because the audience "wouldn't get it". It's fucking Sonic! Nearly everyone at least has some idea of what kind of world he inhabits and interacts with. They don't have know every single lore and detail, but even the average kid that is a casual has an awareness of what his world is like. Most Sonic fans are adults or have kids now, I know they can handle a non-Earth or more abstract version of Earth fantasy.
