Erm, there was a comic series about a female spiderman. She was Peter's daughter. It was really good and a lot of people liked this. They could totally do this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Girl

That's her picture in the article.
theres also a spider woman isnt there?

OT: anyway I think this is a terrible idea, sorry but women can't be spiders, I have yet to see a female that can be a spider as convincingly as a guy
True, but I think her connections to Spiderman is a bit thin. Also she can shoot energy blasts out of her hands.

That's nice, but since the claim was that Bob insisted it flopped, that doesn't make any difference. You wouldn't say TF4 flopped, would you?
Just for the record: I tend to disagree with a lot of Bob's assessments of movies with the exception of - in some cases - "this movie is good" or "this movie is crap" in which case our agreements are based purely upon the perspective that to each movie-goer a movie is going to be one or the other. My point remains valid, though: ticket sales =/= good movie, just as a lack of ticket sales =/= bad movie. Just because TF4 was a commercial success doesn't mean it wasn't a crap movie. Shall we cross media genres? Would you say that just because a game sells 5 million copies it's therefor good?

Opinions!

I won't bother with addressing this with my own thoughts, since someone else in this topic has already said why "waiting to make sure it's done right" is better than "doing one just for the hell of it":
And since that doesn't really address the part where Marvel only seems to have issues "doing it right" with females, that was a waste of time. Hell, they're sticking out Ant Man. The Green Lantern argument is looking worse and worse.
Actually, yeah, it does address the issue of them only wanting to make sure they "do it right" with females. As Sleekit said: if they try it and it bombs, they'll be gun-shy about trying it again since they'll likely be led to believe that the super-hero fanbase doesn't have a taste for movies revolving around super-heroines. That's a silly notion, to be sure, but have you heard the kind of "logic" that comes out of Hollywood? We're not dealing with the sharpest tools in the shed, here.

The reference to Green Lantern was a general example of "They tried it, it failed miserably, now there's no interest in doing another one".

I think we need Movie Bob to weight in.
Most people that seem to believe that Spider-Woman is NOT owned by Sony since she has a HYDRA origin, is an Avenger, and has zero relationship to Spider-man.

Who owns the rights is the question of the day. I sure hope this isn't another Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch thing.
Besides, Skye on Agents of SHIELD needs to be Spider-Woman.

I wouldn't call Deadline a good source since their article referred to 'Firestarter' as a possibility until someone corrected them.

Definitely can't hurt the "Spiderman" film franchise at the moment. Could be good, could suck because Sony sucks with Spiderman movies. I am not inclined to see it just for the fact that it's a female lead though.

Also they didn't genderswap Thor. Thor is apparently more of a title given to the wielder of Mjolnir than a name. Like the saying on Mjolnir goes "If he who lifts the hammer shall be worthy, he shall posses the power of Thor" The old Thor did something that hasn't been revealed yet to disgrace himself, meaning he is no longer fit to wield Mjolnir. Now the new female Thor has taken up the hammer in his absence. The old Thor will still be present in the storyline, fighting with his old axe Jarnbjorn.
Eh... I don't think anyone believes that. They are keeping the title of the book "Thor" because they don't want to lose the audience that comes with it(probably), though they will probably lose some anyway. Thor is definitively a name of the character and a male one at that. Others who have wielded Mjolnir were not called Thor. I can't help but wonder if they didn't drop the news too soon and they plan on changing the title of the book. It would only make sense. Or perhaps, in an interesting move, they will make Thor the main character of the book still and we will see the exploits of the hammer wielder through his eyes... though I don't know if Marvel writers have that in them. Not after finally getting to read Infinity, much to my great disappointment, the writing for big events and major changes seems to have declined in the last few years.

I honestly think they best thing they can do is remove the female character from the Thor name and maker her, her own character. We have seen similar switches before and no one ran from it then. For a little while, T'Challa and Storm were the heads of the Fantastic Four, they didn't start calling him Mr. Fantastic and her The Invisible Girl. They still had their own identities. She should have her own identity or the character literally risks being stuck as "the female Thor" for all of eternity.

They want it to be sustainable? Easy, stop telling the same story over and over again. There are thousands of comics written that are unique stories they can use but they stick with the origin story and make a couple crappy sequels that were the same as the ones before the latest reboot or at least close enough to them.

Sony's actually going to make a female-fronted super hero movie?

Your move, Marvel.
Incidentally, still better than DC's track record with women in movies at this point.

OT: You know, it's a horrible sign when the creators of a movie, show, or whatever else have "no idea" about the future of their said movie, show, or whatever else. It implies they're not being told stuff and they don't have any control over what the movie, show, or whatever else has been or ever will be. Granted, we knew Sony has been man-handling the franchise since Raimi's Spiderman 3 (which is what ultimately started the expedient death of the franchise). But this is just depressing. I don't mind Sony keeping Spiderman. I really don't mind. They just need to give the writing over to someone WITH TALENT and then let them do their thing instead of trying to control everything to make it popular for everyone. Otherwise you'll just be throwing more money into the black hole that is this Amazing Spiderman franchise.

I say they should go with Felicia Hardy, and a porn star who wants to get into mainstream acting, cause the bustline required just can't normally be found in nature.

Meh, you can pack a bra. I mean, we had a 'superman' suit that gave Nicolas Cage muscles, we can make a 'chesty' Black Cat suit.

So apperently every superhero must have a sex change operation nowadays.

There is no objective way to measure good movie. The best we got is popularity (not the same as ticket sales, some people go see it and hate it afterwards).

I kind of like the idea of Anya Corazon Spider-Girl, haven't read the short lived series yet, plan to, only read issue 2 before. She's certainly aimed to be a newer superhero, girl doesn't seem to stop tweeting(?). That could be an interesting thing, and not that far it seemed from what was in the Amazing Spider-Man movie, he seemed like he was trying to lay up the super star aspect, and Anya seems to post tweets or internet posts of some sort throughout the comics as The_Spider_Girl.

'Course I wouldn't really trust the studio to deliver.

A Felicia movie could be pretty cool.

You think with this still somehow running kick of gritty through super hero movies we'll see Spidey come up against Morbius? =P

That pic... please giver her a sandwich.. or hamburger... or anything to eat...

Thats not spidergirl... thats Anorexia girl.

But seriously.. are we really going to slap tits and vagina on any male superhero now and call it an achievement for diversity?

Newsflash: Diversity isnt genderswapping.. its comming up with Female characters that can stand on their own without having to rely on the fame of male superheros and their lore.

This is just a cheap marketing gimmick with the comic industry begging to be taken more serious cause they are so respecting all genders and sexualities when in truth they just want to sucker in more people to buy their crap.

Definitely, and this kind of cheap pandering gimmicks are in themselves far more sexist than not having female heroes.

OT: If Sony keeps up their track record with superhero movies especially Spider-Man movies so far this is going to be excellent, though I think it's significantly more likely that it'll be a pandering gimmicky movie.

However, I honestly do not understand all the rage for the Amazing Spider-Man movies that goes on around here. It's like they somehow watched a completely different movie judging by how divorced most of the criticism I see around here is from anything that actually happened on screen.

So they wanna make a spider woman movie, without actual spider woman, because they don't have the rights to her.

Why did someone think this was worth doing? Geezus Sony, just give it up already so Spidey can be in the GOOD marvel movies where he belongs damn it.

But...its not a genderswap. Its Spiderman's Daughter. And most of the incarnations of her are actually pretty nicely done, with the conflict of an old peter parker having his own past butt heads with his fatherly instincts as she does her thing. And on her side, the whole 'Parents being hypocritical, but do they have good reason to warn against things they did in their own youth?' dilemma.

Oh well.

The real question if they take Spider-girl, is which incarnation, there have been a few due to the whole timeline/alternate earths business Marvel does.

Sony, please, for the love of all that's holy sell the rights back to Marvel/Disney. NO ONE at Sony has any idea where the hell they're going with the series, they're literally just spinning their tires...just throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks. Time to cut your losses and sell off the rights, at least then you can make some money off the franchise.

Considering ASM2 is the only reason there movie business was profitable last quarter (regardless of what Bob believes) I doubt that's ever going to happen.
Ticket Sales =/= Good Movie. See Also: Transformers.

And? I never said it did but selling the rights back to Marvel when the films make them money is not only not going to happen it would also be really stupid.

"But Bob says it sucks so it must suck even though I haven't seen it as Bob said it sucks"

The responses I got for actually asking some of the complainers about why they didn't like ASM2 when it first came out.

I'd rather have them quit while they're ahead, if this bombs it'll basically be the end of ever seeing regular superheroine films because movie company executives will just point to this one and say "It doesn't work".

"If we keep doing this long enough, perhaps people will like our Spiderman reboots!"

Yes Sony, you are very daring to capitalise on the recent media hubbub about feminism and female protagonists, well done(!)

The downside of it is, is that we don't expect you to make anything good out of this :p

Could be cool. Unlike a lot of people I don't mind the amazing spider man movies. There are a lot of problems but it holds up ok in my books. Honestly, having watched captain america 2 I enjoyed both amazing spider man movies more but I wouldn't call them fantastic, just a decent action movie with some occasional cool scenes, like the fighting in the library with lizard man with the classical music, or how peter Parker actually fights like a spider as opposed to just using web or the amazing lighting effects electro used.

But then again, I found the avengers to be miserably boring, tension-less and unfunny so what do I know about superhero movies.
