Sony Announces Playstation Eye

The next generation of Sony's Eyetoy is dated for the PlayStation 3.

Scheduled for a summer release in Europe and North America, Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed the release window for the new PlayStation Eye, a new iteration of the PlayStation Eyetoy designed for the PlayStation 3.

Key features announced for the system include:
[li]Four enhanced microphones that incorporates multidirectional voice location tracking, echo cancelling and background noise reduction that focuses on the spoken word for more accurate speech recognition[/li]
[li]The ability to capture videos and audio directly to the PS3's hard drive[/li]
[li]Improved compatibility with low-light conditions[/li]
[li]A range of different capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse[/li]
[li]Faster frame rate for improved tracking, responsiveness and smoothness[/li]
[li]The lens can zoom for close-up and full body shots with 56 to 72 degrees of view[/li]
[li]A software application called EyeCreate, which allows users to save and edit photos, video and audio clips[/li]
[li]60 frames per second at 640 by 480 resolution and 120 frames per second with 320 by 240[/li]

The first game to be confirmed [] for the Eye is The Eye of Judgement, a card battling game planned for this worldwide launch fall.

David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe commented, "Playstation Eye is a great example of how we have moved forward so significantly with our technology. Playstation Eye has four times the resolution, twice the framerate and double the sensitivity of its predecessor EyeToy USB Camera. With the technology that we now have at our disposal we will be able to dramatically improve the communications experience enjoyed on PS3."

Richard Marks, research and development at Sony Computer Entertainment America added, "With the release of Playstation Eye we will be able to dramatically enhance the consumer's PS3 experience. Beyond audio/video chat and the ability to save videos to your PS3 hard drive, Playstation Eye opens up a whole new world of entertainment options and adds a new dimensions to games across multiple genres."
