Sony Announces SOCOM 4

Sony's mysterious super-secret announcement didn't turn out to be a new Twisted Metal or Killzone as some people were hoping, but it should definitely make SOCOM fans happy.

There was a bit of buzz around the internet earlier this week about a mystery announcement Sony was planning to reveal a hot new game. Naturally, the internet being what it is, rumors abounded: Some called the unknown title David Jaffe's next Twisted Metal, some said it was SOCOM 4 [http://www.amazon.com/Killzone-3-Playstation/dp/B002I0K6DG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279054111&sr=1-1].

SOCOM 4 is a new tactical, squad-based third-person shooter that puts players in the shoes of a man known only as the Ops Commander. Deployed to Southeast Asia with your five-man NATO squad, you have to... well, presumably you have to shoot some suckas in the face. The SOCOM games have never quite taken off as much as some other series, but they definitely have their own fanbase who should be quite pleased by this news.

The PlayStation Blog [http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/socom-4-teaser-directors-commentary/] has a version of the above trailer with commentary from the game's Creative Director, Ed Byrne - if the game intrigues you, it's definitely worth a watch.

You mean they're making a sequel to a moderately successful franchise?

I never saw this coming.

How strangely epic-sauce.

I'm glad it wasn't Killzone 3. I will never forgive Guerilla unless they put in split-screen deathmatch with bots!

I would've preferred inFAMOUS 2, or a new Twisted Metal, or Jak and Daxter, or Sly Cooper, or Resistance, but I suppose it's better than a sequel to Heavenly Sword.

This is quite a suprise, I thought the SOCOM series was over and done with. Hopefully there's a new game engine and they've worked out all the AI problems from the first few games.

Funny, despite the incredibly stupid things that your team would do sometimes, like hiding in front of cover instead of behind it, or failing to fire at an enemy thats right in front of them, overall I really enjoyed playing the series. I love tactical squad shooters, so hopefully they've improved on it.

Should be cool to see how it turns out ;)

Since SOCOM Confrontation was a piece of crap that was totally inaccessible to newcomers to the series by being online only and having no tutorials, I'm rather GLaD that they're making one with a single player campaign.

P.S. Thanks

Wait doesn't the company that makes the SOCOM series also release MAG? If so they have a lot of hard work ahead of them making SOCOM 4 and managing the MAG community.

Though keep in mind that was made by an entirely different company, not Zipper. Just thought I should mention.

OT: I'm not a huge fan of SOCOM, but it does intrigue me. Put on some gameplay videos and let's go from there.
