Sony Backpedals on NGP Quake Delay Fears

The NGP is still coming out this year, says a Sony spokesperson.

Despite what SCEA boss Jack Tretton might have suggested earlier in the week, the official line from Sony is that the recent earthquake in Japan will not delay the release of its successor to the PSP, currently codenamed the "Next Generation Portable," or NGP.

On Monday [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109013-Earthquake-Might-Shelve-Sonys-NGP-Handheld-Till-2012], Tretton said that the quake had added to the "competitive issues" that Sony faced with the NGP. He said that Sony was already looking at trailing Nintendo's launch of the 3DS by about eight months, and that the quake might push that up to a year. This would mean that the NGP's launch would slip from its rather sketchy Winter 2011 release window into early 2012 for most territories.

Sony seems to have significantly different ideas about the quake's impact however. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal [http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20110404-714785.html], Sony spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka said that the reports of delays were "wrong," and that the quake hadn't yet affected Sony's launch plans for the NGP. He said that Sony would continue to monitor the situation, but at the moment, the NGP launch was still scheduled for this year.

It's debatable whether the quake genuinely hasn't affected the launch, or whether Fukuoka is just doing a little damage control. It's quite possible that the launch will go ahead as planned, but that Sony's logistical costs and other overheads will be higher than it expected.

I don't think it's fair to call it backpedaling. There's a lot of uncertainty over there. The idea that it may not make it out in all territories this year is a fair assessment, if you ask me.

Also, both reports come from 2 people likely referring to their own markets and both can be correct.

Exactly, I don't care when it's coming out, but if it costs like $350 I won't be getting one so just give us a price point already!

Ah... I was looking into getting one, but I also want a PS3, a gaming computer, an iPod Touch, a new cellphone, and maybe the slim 360 because mine's acting up like crazy lately, and on top of that a few new games.

So... no, not right now, not for a while. Especially considering that I'll only get all of what I already want if I win the lottery. So whether it comes out this year or next probably won't affect me too much.
PSP2 is a PS3 you can fit partially in your mouth. (I.e. it's portable)...

Well not really but it's close. I'd rather it was delayed to be honest. I just bought a second hand psp1000 solely because I'm suddenly into Monster Hunter and I want to finish Freedom Unite before the PSP2 comes out. (I only ever play on the train to and from uni so it might take me a while)

From how Sony sounds, this things gone to cost more then I'm willing to spend. So really, it coming out now or 3 years from now won't effect me.

Gotta admit, I do like the look of it.

It's really pretty sad if the biggest worry people have about the earthquake is that their damn gaming will be delayed.

For some reason, I can't picture this thing costing any less than 300 USD. Considering how badly the 3DS' launch lineup has been criticized, I'm amazed that nobody's said a thing about the NGP's. It's supposed to be out this year, yet barely any games have been officially announced for it; those that have just seem generally lackluster.

But oh well, I'll be happy with my 3DS for the time being. My PSP will be good enough when Monster Hunter Freedom 3 comes out in the US.

I read somewhere awhile back that its gonna be 350$ for the 3g version and 250$ for the normal wifi version.

I hope it still releases on time, cause then I will hopefully have enough to get it if i'm not still playing a nonstop binge of Skyrim.

Oh this is most certainly damage control. You wouldn't flat out call Tretton "wrong" without the purpose of saving face with what I assume would be stockholders.
