Sony CEO Dismisses Calls for PS3 Price Cut

thanks for making me think of how much i used to pay for a super nintendo game >_<....

sony just needs to set itself apart from the 360 in a way other than blu-ray. when two systems have pretty much identical games coming out for them, people are going to go with the cheaper system usually (unless they REALLY want to play MGS4....that is the only noteworthy game i can think of that the PS3 has going for it)

and i'm still confused as to why the reasons listed are not valid responses? most of these are actually good reasons, not "sony sucks! Xbox rules!!"

I apologize, but this is what really, REALLY steams me up. I wish people would stop the hate for the Ps3. This is hate right here.

There are hundreds. HUNDREDS of bloody games for it. Not to mention several consecutive price cuts in the past, AND they're putting Backwards compatibility in through some new tech in the near future. So none of the responses are valid anymore.

You're all frankly making excuses over and over so you don't have to buy the Ps3. You won't buy it even if it's price drops again. You'll make up another excuse.

I know you think I'm flaming, but it's the truth. I've seen it happen a hundred times.

I honestly think the PS3 is as cheap as it can be at this point in the game. Buying a 360 with a hard drive, wireless internet, and a years worth of online subscription (all of which the PS3 comes with already included) brings you to $450 according to Best Buy. The PS3 right now is $400, what is the problem here?

The problem is if you don't want all of those -- you just want a game machine.

True I don't have the wifi piece to my 360.

Too many people are taking things too personally. Step back, take a breath, and review the posting guidelines.

Meantime, remember that Activision, as a developer, wants to sell games. If they develop for the PS3, they'll need to sell enough games to cover the cost of development. Given that it's admittedly more difficult to do on a PS3, they need to either sell more or charge more to offset the increased costs.

Adjusting a game's price down may get more sales, but it's no guarantee as to whether it will earn more profit as you need to sell even more of them. Increasing the customer base, however, increases the base potential sales independant of price.

Consumers will always prefer to pay the minimum price they can. However, everyone has their 'good enough for me' point.

Sony appears to believe that a decrease in console price will not increase sales enough to justify it. Given the current state of the world economy, they may be correct. They may also be wrong. Only time will tell. Or guys with advanced degrees in economic fields with charts and graphs and whatnot.

No, MGS4 isn't and probably never will be on 360, and I still don't get why people are humping that dog all the time. What is on 360, however, is the new MGS game staring Raiden and Kojima having little to do with the actual creation for it apparantly.

I have during this whole discussion have not once bashed or supported either console. I simply stated in my posts valid points as to why a price cut would be beneficial.

As has been said many times before, console makers, I feel, need to learn to make money off the games and peripherals rather than the console itself. You make more money from a game license than you would for a console, unless the game totally bombs. Yes, exclusives come and go, some aren't even complete exclusives. Sony standing firm is a bold move, and we'll see what becomes of their choice of actions in the future.

I'm torn on this issue. Obviously the analysts and people bitching at Sony to lower the price don't know the full picture, and maybe Sony is perfectly happy with their situation. But these people obviously know something, and at this point I feel that Sony being stubborn and digging their heels in is just making them come across as dicks, and nobody wants to buy something from a dick company. Unless you're a dick.

Sony, if you can hear me, if you cut the price, I will totally buy a PS3. And I'll probably buy 5 games to go with it. And hell, by the end, I might have 50 PS3 games in my collection. Promise.

I'm assuming you're a liar and should promptly be quiet now. You hate Sony and would never buy their products. If they did drop the price, I expect you to then attack their exclusives, then attack their BC problem, and finally say you hate it because it comes in black (forgetting the others do too). 12 year olds have a tendency to do that.

So all your posts bashing us just because we don't support sony isn't making you a fan boy? I'm sorry I love some of the games on the PS3(I have disgaea 3 and I want to play it). And I haven't really seen anyone bash the PS3 on this topic, and saying us haters should have our consoles catch on fire sounds like something a fanboy would say. When I was buying a console I was going to buy a PS3, but when I was picking through the games there was like 3 games on the PS3 I wanted while there was around 10 games I wanted. I still only want 5 games for the PS3, when sony said they dropped support for the PS2 it really hurt my choice on buying one. My friend even went out of his way just for the E-PS3(emotion chip). I love my PS2 and I wanted the PS3 for PS2 support, Linux support, and disgaea 3/metal gear solid 4. But since most of my sony collection is PS2 games I fail to see the point in owning a PS3 for 5 games. Anyway just because you don't like that fact we want a price drop to buy the system, doesn't mean you should act like a sony fanboy. Because that's what you are, complaining that we hate the system when we want a price drop to BUY the system. And the save up thing, you know we have other things to buy besides games right?
