Sony Japan Could Shut Down to Save Energy

Sony's Japan offices could be taking an extended vacation this summer to conserve energy in an increasingly power-desperate nation.

The people and nation of Japan have started the long and arduous process of rebuilding their country after the devastating Tohoku Earthquake last month, but things aren't completely out of the woods yet. The damage the earthquake dealt to Japan's power plants - particularly the crisis at Fukushima - have resulted in a nation increasingly strapped for energy.

To do its part (and presumably reduce costs), Sony Japan will be complying with the government's energy-saving targets and exhortations for large corporations and manufacturers to reduce their power consumption. The electronics giant is considering a plan that will rearrange its holiday schedule, moving two weeks' worth of holidays into the middle of the summer, when power consumption will be at its peak thanks to it being really friggin' hot.

Sony has also considered moving its work hours of operation earlier "to cut electricity usage on a day-to-day basis as well," representative George Boyd told the Beeb [http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/13075977]. Sony employees will be expected to make up their sudden summer vacation later in the year, when the nation's power situation is hopefully in a better state.

However, despite previous comments from Sony that the Tohoku Earthquake would not delay its new NGP [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109052-Sony-Backpedals-on-NGP-Quake-Delay-Fears], it's hard to envision a situation where a two-week shutdown wouldn't stall the NGP launch - if only for a couple of weeks.

Good on ya Sony. I'm going to pretend that it has nothing to do with business.

Yep, the next power-saving strategy will be to upload all their employees' 'ghosts' into the Net.

Clarification: (That's 'ghosts' as in Ghost in the Shell, otherwise, sh*t, that could come across as really bad)

sony shutdown = less money coming into the country

I live here in Tokyo and everyone is more worried about what the A/C situation is going be this summer than more earthquake or radiation.

Basically we all expect to be very sweaty and smelly as a city.

You know, I have never even considered the possibility of not having enough power. We just use it constantly that it's never sprung to mind.

No, by no means. Also, NGE fans might get their Neo Tokyo 3 one day.

Now if only Sony of America would follow suit and shut down Jack Tretton's office. Permanently if possible. They really need to get rid of that guy and his mouth.

Yeah. As it says in the article, the employees get to make up the time later. Basically some of their holiday time for later in the year just got taken away. Whether or not that's a ripoff is up to each person, I guess. It's not happening to me so I can't say either way.

Ok... weighing odds Anon takes credit for this. Probably gonna take credit for the tsunamis too.

Shall we start at 3:2?

My prayers go out to the people of japan. I can't even begin to imagine how to live though a triple wammie like that, Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear meltdown. On top of that now they have to try to rebuild and move on with massive energy shortages.

Standard business practice. If they are going to shut down for a while, it's usual for businesses to use employees holiday pay to keep paying them. Employee can opt to not get paid if they want.
