No you're not alone. I too have been left out of the "Gem is a stupid name" stuff.

Its not a meme. Its a joke on an old TV show called Jem [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jem_(TV_series)]. There was a movie made called Jem: Truly Outrageous.

And the only reason I know this is 'cause of a Robot Chicken sketch and Wikipedia.
