Sony Nixes 3D For Next PSP

Sony has no plans to imitate the Nintendo 3DS and won't be incorporating 3D into the next PSP.

Sony might have been pleased by the 3DS [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101501-Sony-Pleased-By-Nintendo-3DS] but has no plans to use a glasses-free 3D screen for the PSP's successor. For now, it looks like the company will be focusing on 3D games only for the PlayStation 3.

In an interview with Industry Gamers [http://www.industrygamers.com/news/sony-very-confident-in-ps3-move-following-e3/2/], Sony Worldwide Studios VP Scott Rohde was asked if the company would add 3D technology into the next PSP and he replied: "No, no plans for that ... We just chose to focus on the big 3D in the home."

This makes sense considering Sony CEO Kaz Hirai amazing lineup [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101514-Sony-Boss-Talks-Down-Handheld-3D], but Nintendo's future darling handheld looks even cooler than expected.

Sony seems to be in danger of falling even further behind in the handheld space and hasn't even done anything with touchscreen technology yet. What will the PSP2 do, when will it be announced, and is there even one in the planning stages?

In regards to these questions, Rhode said: "It's just not something we're announcing right now. It's just as simple as that. It's all I can tell you." A waiting game it is.

Another one? What is this! Why can't they do like nintendo and wait a few years for their new console. Christ! There more console on either Xbox or PS3 than exclusive out! Holy.....
You can't be serious? Nintendo? If they didnt release a new console every year then what is the DSXL the DS Lite the DSi hmm? They are not the same console either
I meant in general. I've been gaming since the nintendo first came out. In fact, i was born the very same years. That sh*t is new. I've been through many systems and even Sega didn't dish them out so fast. I know that it take about 5 to 6 years before they can fully use the full potential of a console, find the quirks and push it to the limit. They didn't even make it that far and still 5 and 6 "model" of each game console has been out. Call me a old timer for all i care... but i'm not a young dumbass gamer that will buy the "new toy" every f'in E3.
No no no. Basically what you were saying was accusing sony of releasing consoles far too often and that they should do it like nintendo who has released more handhelds in the space of 6 years than anyone else. You were sony bashing really when nintendo commits the same crime.

Yeah your point is valid that the number of consoles now is stupid but the way you went about it was wrong

Yeah and no, i was referring at the old order... if i can borrow the expression. Sega did crumble because of they did to many system. I wasn't a Nintendo Kid, i never was. My friend had a Super Nintendo and i had a sega. When they disappear behind the dreamcast, i went with Sony. They had more appeal then Nintendo. And I do say disappear, I never'd heard about the dreamcast until it flop. As for now, i go Nintendo when there enough game that appeal to me... but the control system is a big turn off for me. I knock senseless my little nephew with Wii sport and the fake Baseball attachment. But when i'm refering to Nintendo, I'm speaking of 1985 to 2000 Nintendo.

Eh, I'm beginning to doubt the existence of the PSP2. The 3DS has already garnered so much big-name attention (Metal Gear Solid, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil, etc.) that it almost seems like it would be a mistake to make one.

I feel like the Metal Gear Solid title is perhaps the most indicative of those three. Both portable MGS games (in addition to the two Metal Gear Acid games) this generation were on PSP; I feel like Kojima's shift to the 3DS says a lot.

To be honest, I feel as though Sony is going to back out of the handheld industry, and Apple is going to make a new gaming-centered device that uses the already-established power of the App Store. Unless another company steps in, that's the only way I see this going.

Nintendo always seems to be a step ahead of the other guys.
3d is lame anyway. For all systems. Its not that Nintendo is ahead of them because sony already has 3d games so they beat them to the finish line but the 3d is stupid. It hopefully will be a passing fad.
Warren Spector disagrees [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101676-Warren-Spector-3DS-Changed-My-Life].
Lol. I already read that. As i said on the Forum there. It must have been a shitty life if 3ds changed it.

Also who is Warren Spector?
Your are not officially a casual game player, now and forever.

um....isn't 4d time. Check out Broken Helix. It used 4d :)
From a narrow minded perspective yes.

But to the open mind it is a demon waiting the doom of mankind by slowly poisoning the waters and manipulating out leaders. Waiting for the perfect moment when mankind is too weak to resist to fully break loose of it's confines and lead us into a glorious age of anarchy and destruction. something more.
So.....the Illuminati?
No, Religious Right

Whats Deus Ex?
Your license to comment on PC gaming matters has been revoked. Please go and do some [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex] research [http://store.steampowered.com/app/6910/] before you comment on any PC matters.

On topic: That's what they said about touchscreens, and look where that went.
2 things. 1 i HATE wikipedia. I would rather a homeless person who doesn't own a PC tell me about it then Wikipedia. 2. I HATE valve and anything to do with them....Because of Gabe Newell or whatever his name is. So the 2 links you gave me are breaking my heart lol. Also I can comment on any PC games. I missed out on a few doesn't mean i can't comment on them. Thats like telling someone Because they didn't play Chrono Trigger they can't talk about RPG's.

Sony has been acting very stange lately... They say they're pleased with the competition and now say they aren't going to challenge them?

Sony... What tricks have you got up your sleeve, you sly devil?
They probably don't have anything up their sleeve. It sounds more like they are abandoning the downmarket in favour of the upmarket.
The downmarkets are the areas that are not profitable to them, the people who don't want/need the PSP, so they are happy to let Nintendo have them since it seems they can't beat them.

It was the same thing they did when the Wii was announced. Back then they also expressed that they were sure the Wii gamers would "then graduate to a real console." Seems that history is repeating itself, I'm amazed they haven't learnt anything.
By the time the 3DS downmarket is ready to graduate upmarket to more expensive and expansive 3D solutions, they will want it inexpensive and glasses free.

The market Sony hopes Nintendo will create, will have different expectations compared to what Sony will be able to deliver.
So again a nosell, just like their supposed "graduation" from the Wii to the PS3.

I think it's crap. Sony can't resist, they will do it because they copied Wii this year, and next year or maybe the year after they will try to copy the 3DS. I am not a Nintendo fanboy, I am a dedicated PC gamer and I wanna call it like it is.

The "changed his life" isn't the point. The point is, one of the most influential game designers of all time used to think that 3D was a fad until he saw the 3DS. If his opinion can be so drastically changed, maybe it's time to rethink your utter dismissal.
That assumes that 3D graphics serve a point other than a change in presentation (just like high end graphics).
Any tech can be called revolutionary and still become a dud, no matter who is saying it.
To me, the 3DS's biggest advantage over the other 3D hopefuls is that the 3D function is an option; not a requirement. This creates new design space without restricting it to just the new design space.
For example, I could very easily make a new Advance Wars on the 3DS (a traditionally 2D game) with the option for 3D graphics.

This contrasts the Wii, where you are automatically at a disadvantage (market coverage aside) if you don't use the motion controls in your title, because that is the only thing the Wii does well compared to its competition.

That's why 3D as the basis for a title is nothing more than a fad unless it is used properly.
Not even Avatar convinces me to the contrary.

If Warren Spector changed his opinion, then I'm going to guess that he saw something that actually uses the 3D tech for something other than a shinier presentation. It's merely speculation though. Maybe he finally fell victim to the Shiny Graphics bug that bit so many PC gamers back when Crysis debuted; though I would hope not.

I for one, have not been particularly impressed with the prospect of 3D imagery as the next big thing, but I am open to being convinced to the contrary.
