Sony: No PS3 Install for God of War III

Good news, God of War fans: The final game in Kratos' bloody revenge trilogy will completely avoid the dreaded scourge of PS3 games - the hard-drive install.

If the powerful PS3 had just one hardware weakness, it would probably be the system's need to install data for most of its games before you get to actually jump in and start playing. Devil May Cry's 20-minute install time may have been the extreme exception rather than the rule, but it's still a bit of a mood-killer when you take the shiny new game from the package, put it in, and ... have to sit for a few minutes before getting to play.

Some games are managing to get around the issue thanks to some technical wizardry, such as the mammoth God of War III [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/95648-No-Installation-for-Final-Fantasy-XIII-PS3] won't require anything beyond a simple 5MB install to save your game.

This information comes from Sony Santa Monica technological boss Christer Ericson, who Tweeted [http://twitter.com/ChristerEricson/status/9498460113]:

"God of War 3 does NOT do a HD install. The 5MB listed on box back is for save game only."

Good to know, chief. Next step: Get rid of installs entirely!

Also, am I the only one who feels weird seeing "5MB" to save your game when PS2 memory cards back in the day clocked in at 8MB total?

I prefer to install my games. An uninstalled PS3 game runs louder than an installed 360 game. We should have the option whether or not we want to wait the 5 - 30 minutes.

I agree, after having to start installing games on my PS3, it feels weird when the game loads right up without such a single thought afterwards

I don't mind waiting, honestly, well, mostly, I just wish we could background download games so I could do something else while waiting, like surf the web or look up porn upcoming games ^^

Well, as long as it dones't translate in loadings that creep up your back and bite your neck every 5 minutes, like for Bayonetta.

I remember the good old days of deleting everything of my PS2 memory card on a week by week basis...

Still 5 MB isn't to much to ask

That's strange. Well let's hope the loading times won't be longer than the ones in Crash Bandicoot for the PS2.

5MB for just a save file? Holy hell!

At any rate, glad to see it doesn't have an install. Good incentive to buy it in a few months. (Not really a big fan of the game. Rather a fan of the story)

That's pretty cool I guess. I never really had a problem with the installs. Though it does mean I won't have a massive install when I get it

5MB for a save isn't that much. My Bioshock save was at about 11.5MB by the time I was finnished.

I'd much rather have the option to install games onto the ps3. So many games I have run better if the system does not have to look for the important bits to play it. Star ocean runs kind of smoothly after the 1.2 gig install.

As a gamer coming from the PC originally, I more or less expect games to require an installation before playing. To me, it doesn't matter that much if a game requires an installation before running. Should I ever run out of HD space, there's probably a few game installs that can be removed because I no longer play the games (but who am I kidding, 120gb lasts forever!)

Damn, that usually means longer load times between screens. I don't mind the 10 minutes of install if it means I can avoid two-minute load times. Though, at 40GB...that's a pretty hefty game. That's a whole third of the memory...I hope it doesn't sacrifice load times at the expense of install, though.

I am with most everybody else here make it an option for every game I think if I could install fallout 3 it would be so much better.

I presume, from such melodrama, that this install takes 3 hours AT LEAST.

If not, what exactly is the problem with installing anyway?

Consoles run quieter with games installed don't they?

Well. At least don't need to wait ten years before you play! Question now is how bad is loading lol

Nope. However, I was amazed when I upgraded from the PS1 to the PS2 and saw the difference in memory cards. Besides the size of the memory, the amount of games I could get on one memory card was amazing. You're games were small if you were able to get to the fourth row of that memory card (I think it was 4 slots per row) and yet the PS2 had me scrolling down the card for some slots when I was cleaning them out.

I never really had much of a problem with the install times*. The games load quicker afterwards, don't they? If people hate them that much, surely Sony could make them optional.

[sub]*Unless you count the Orange Box install; that just wasn't funny.[/sub]

I don't have a problem with hard drive installs at all. I'd rather install to hard drive then punish the disk platter. I finish the game, I delete the data, bam simple as that.

To be honest if you can't wait like a minute for a smoother running game then you can just go die...

5mb save for GoW3 ? how is that even possible. gow2 needed about 300k. (15 times more)
i think they just got lazy and put unnecessary data on save file.
