"It's difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don't look at their console as being competitors," he said. "They're a different world and we operate in our world - that's kind of the way I look at things."

So they ignore anything they can't bullshit their way through? Sony shut up and try to sell the PS3, don't try to stop the other consoles geting sales.

Its not just this interview eather, they keep beating the same dead horse.

Well, the PS3 is good for the consumer, but not good for Sony. Since I'm the consumer, I'm happy.
DING DING DING DING DING! This sums things up precisely. I couldn't be happier with my PS3.

I honestly don't think Sony will make profit off PS3. At least not a whole lot. They released it too late, they overpriced the hell out of it at the beginning, they got rid of backwards compatibility for the cheaper one. That's a whole lot of fail.

as an example, my work is giving us bonuses this year and we get to choose what bonus we want. two of the choices we have are the 360 elite and the 80 gig ps3, i have a ps3 so i'm not getting one, i'm taking golf clubs as there's nothing really great on the 360 i want, however several ppl are picking the ps3 because of the blu-ray player and it has video games and no one i know of is picking the 360, one guy is getting a second ps3 instead of a 360. kinda says something about the value of the system
...Or it could say that people realize that the PS3 is more expensive and has a Blu-Ray player and are thus jumping at the chance to get one for free.

I'll assume that the article you linked to was the wrong URL, as it links to an article about Google. I also don't know what FUD means, but astroturfing is a quite a bold claim to throw around, especially as Sony has done its fair share too. [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0G0LlXv-nyI] ( Some more here too. [http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20051229/playstation_ads_051229] )

Can you provide any examples on Microsoft's part? None spring to mind, but I'm willing to be proved wrong.
No, it was the right article, as you obviously gather what my point is: MS engages in provable and documented shadow campaigns against their competitors. They are not above stealing code (see Video for Windows 1.1d and the Indeo codec), they have been caught more than once codifying and making FUD corporate policy (the Rick Jelliffe [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween_documents] spring to mind), and they happened to be the target of one of the largest anti-trust cases in US history, and they were actually convicted of such in the EU.

Your examples are failed attempts at viral marketing. They aren't even completely owned by Sony, they are the product of a hired marketing team that thought they could pull one over. It's not even the same ballpark.

So, what I'm saying is, yeah, on the subject of failed viral marketing, Sony and Microsoft share some similar bad marks. But on the overall culture of doing anything to win, including lying to your customer and the media, including stealing code from your competition when they are beating you, that's something Microsoft owns. Sony doesn't even come close to the level of plain old dirty pool that those guys up in Bellevue excel at.
You somewhat sidestepped my question there.
I directly responded to your question. You said you didn't understand FUD. You also asked, "Can you provide any examples on Microsoft's part?" I assumed you meant examples of behavior like that mentioned in my original Google link, examples of FUD and astroturfing, behavior that is contributory to believing they are capable of engaging in the same behavior in the game market. If you meant examples of failed or exposed viral marketing on behalf of Microsoft by paid advertising companies, no I didn't look for that because that's not what I meant by FUD or astroturfing. I addressed that in my second paragraph above.

So, which question do you believe I sidestepped? I'm providing examples of manipulative tactics that are beyond what is considered marketing. This is contributory to my assertion that I'd rather see out in the open combat like Kaz is displaying as opposed to whisper campaigns and soft bigotry like Microsoft has been caught doing just about everywhere it does business. Again, see evidence of this behavior above.

That would be what I'd do, and I hate the PS3....

....controllers.

Anyway I don't see why people are defending PS3 here, nobody has said it was bad (I'll even say the PS3 is cool). People are just pointing out the bitching coming from sony is annoying.

As for the Nintendo Sony line [http://www.wii.com] that it's not actually competition at all. "It's difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don't look at their console as being competitors," he said. "They're a different world and we operate in our world - that's kind of the way I look at things."
I nervously clap for Kazzy here, as finally people get that Nintendo is doing their own thing and Sony/MS are doing their own thing.

wii - group play for old and new players always coming with new ideas and not being draw to one thing!

ps3 - blu ray....sing star....erm..

360 - doesn't care just play and enjoy

why is it so hard for them to gasp that people just want to play games? all sony do is talk =/ a little less talk and more action.and i know the 360 has had its flaws but at least microsoft are making up for it lol.i really think the only people that are winning here are nintendo because they just shut up and get on with everything....

I consider it big words for sony to be saying this sort of thing when the Wii and Xbox are more popular at the moment. Especially the Wii.

As for longevity....that may hurt in the long run....next gen will cause it problems because people will still be getting used to the idea of the PS3 not being stupidly expensive and maybe having games before they are forced to release another console.

In the end, none of it matters. Console fanboys need help. I chose the 360 because it had the games that appealed to me most as a gamer...at the time the Wii I thought was a little too family-oriented and the PS3 was far out of my price range and had no games that appealed to me.

Long...long story short. The PS3 won't 'outlast' the others....at the moment it should be aiming to compete with them.

You know what? Nevermind. I've gotten myself into a three page argument over a throw away comment. I'm just going to agree to disagree, and walk away.

Make of that what you will.

Well for the 360 console itself, his statement is absolutly 100% true, in my case and all my friends who onw 360's as well, they have all had the red ring of death!
Oh my... you appear to have caught the stick by the wrong end... He means the longevity of the technology, as opposed to specific consoles. Also i know about 30 people with 360s and not a single one has had RROD
You now know 31 :D
All iw as doing was pointing out, that he says all his freidns have had RROD, but i dont know ANYONE who has, so people he knows, dont reflect the general trend. Also he missed the point totally, as the PS3 will be outdated, and be inferior to whatever microsoft put together for the next gen, because theyll have the full advantage of new technology, wheras, the PS3 will stay exactly the same

Last time I checked, they've never had a console that's been on the market for more than four or five years and we've committed to a ten year life cycle, so you do the math.
That's because the Xbox was Microsoft's first console. The PS1 didn't last 10 years before the PS2 came out. It's kind of an unfair attack.
Read my mind.

Why does Sony keep talking smack? Last I checked they're the only company that's hemorrhaging money with their console.
They're not talking smack, they're responding to poorly thought out criticisms that are commonly leveled at them.

What's strange is people still believe nintendo and microsoft are going to be able to release something that can compete with the Ps3 without access to blu-ray.
What's strange is people still believing the HD market is going to explode all of a sudden given the current economic situation. Or indeed that the HD market was suddenly going strong. Face it, not even Blu-Ray alone has sold enough PS3s right now.
You seem to have misunderstood me, what I was saying is that until microsoft and nintendo can come up with something better or equal to blu ray there isn't going to be a next generation console from them (or at least not anything that could be called an improvement).

What you also have to understand is that it was the Ps3 selling blu-ray that sony really needed.

There is no bitching, sony has simply started doing what it should have been doing all along.
ADVERTISING and informing it's potential customer base.

Then to be blunt, they are doing it wrong. As all but the PS3 owners have said they seem petty. If they talked about the strength of the PS3 then it would be normal, but they mainly talk about the shortcomings of the 360 and ignore the Wii.

Both of those things are bad.

In that quote, I'd say he's dead on with what he said. The wii is in competition, at least generally, but in terms of specifics it's doing it's own thing that's noticeably separate from the other two consoles. Kaz knows this, so thank god he actually said "They're doing their own thing, we're doing ours."

That's one thing I'm crediting him for in this interview right now.

A ten-year lifespan? Ten years ago, I was using a Pentium MMX 166 with 16MB of RAM. By the end of ten years of the PS3, the PC will make the PS3 look like an armless, legless cripple in comparison.
WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT PC-

Ehem, sorry, we're not talking about PCs here. Seriously, we've been over these PC/Console stuff a billion times already. There's no point in even trying to mention this stuff since the PC will always be like this.
