Sony: PS4 a "Great Opportunity" for Vita

Sony's Andrew House believes that the Vita could find new life as a "companion" to the PS4.

It's no secret that the PlayStation Vita hasn't been the tremendous hit Sony was hoping it would be. It hasn't been an objective failure, but it also hasn't raked in customers with its promises of console quality experiences you can take on the go. That being the case, things have arguably been turning around for the Vita recently. In Japan, at least, popular software titles have, to an extent, given the handheld a much needed boost.

That said, it still arguably has a long way to go and Sony's Andrew House thinks that its functionality with the PS4 could be the recipe for success that the company has been waiting for. "I think Remote Play offers a great opportunity for PlayStation Vita to be seen as a companion device for the PlayStation 4 - a chance, with a reasonable investment, to have a second-screen experience," said House. House elaborated that the company's research suggests that "companion" approach seems to "[resonate] in Europe," ahead of anywhere else."

Changing the portable's fortunes, however, aren't something he thinks the PS4 can do alone. House also believes that another "pillar of the Vita strategy is to have it be the next platform of opportunity for really good mobile game developers who are looking to expand their creative portfolio into something with more differentiated games interfaces, and we're seeing some success with that." Sadly, when asked about expanding the redesigned Vita's presence outside of Japan, House couldn't "talk about launch plans." That said, he indicated that the 2000-series is "selling very well" in Japan, which we can only imagine will lead to a sooner-rather-than-later North American release.

If only the PSV could get some actual GAMES for it.

Pokemon X/Y is what sold me on getting a 3DS, plus a few Atlus games, this is what the PSV needs as well.

Remote Play is a big factor for me as well as the fact that through PS+ I own about thirty games for the Vita for me to download on Christmas day.

As of November 24th there are 460 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_Vita_games] Vita games. This isn't including the huge number of PSP and PS1 titles available for the system. All I can say to you is look at the games available for the system rather than listen to popular opinion. Lots of people keep saying the system doesn't have any games, but it just isn't true anymore. If you like what you see go ahead and take the dive. Right now is the best time to jump in (if you are a Sony fan). Prices have been lowered and there is currently a $189 bundle on Amazon [http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Exclusive-Holiday-Walking-Vita-PlayStation/dp/B00G9AYVTG/ref=lp_3010601011_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1387228341&sr=1-1] that includes 4 games and a memory card.

I'm going to love the opportunity when Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn can be played remotely on my Vita. When work is slow, I can catch up on my crafting jobs and do some gathering. Or go treasure hunting with me pals, right Church?

@Toadfish1:
Opinions, we all has them.

@Church185:
I don't really count 'ports' as a reason to get a game for a system.

The main thing I see is "We really would like it if you bought a ps vita".

There isn't anything the vita is offering me I want is my problem or at least nothing visible. For me yes minecraft is coming out for it and yes it does have all the tales games I want, but I also have minecraft for pc and it's great there and I'm not spending more or less £160 for 2 games I kind of want to play. It's why I have a 3ds at the end of the day, cos that has tonnes of games I want.

I get the feeling the whole PS4 connecting thing isn't going to pan out well though. The thing is smaller than the wii u gamepad and is playing way more detailed games. I don't know if anyone has tried reading really tiny text and looking at really small things on a tiny screen, but it ain't easy. I don't see developers customising for the vita and that needs to happen for this to really work.

It's not all ports though. Though sadly, most of those non port games are only in Japan. Thank god it isn't region locked.

pokemon's not on all the platforms, so it makes it stronger overall as a system seller

not to mention that it's actually designed to be a full handheld experience to begin with, so it's tighter on that level too

These handhelds need to block UV light. You can't see the damn screens when you're ON THE GO, OUTSIDE. . . .

Minecraft may be on more platforms, but it is on one and precisely on handheld platform in a non-gimped to hell form.

Plus, Pokemon has been the same game remade since 1996 or so, so Minecraft is a newer, fresher experience.

Sony has always fallen face first when it came to advertising their mascosts and software, something which Nintendo does with a fetishistic gusto. If they advertised all the games the vita's got going for then it would probabaly turn around.

And I'm not saying this because I bought myself a Vita for Christmas (they were out of PS4's). Tots unbiased.
