Sony Reaches Shipping Target Numbers at Home

Last year, Sony announced plans to ship 2 million PS3 units worldwide by the end of 2006, and it reached its million unit target in the U.S. on schedule. According to the AP [http://finance.comcast.net/www/news.html?x=http://www.comcast.net/data/news/2007/01/16/563150.xml&cvqh=itn_ps3], Sony announced today that it has reached its shipping target of 1 million PS3 units in Japan about two weeks behind schedule.

Sony admitted falling behind schedule, but remained confident that it would meet the goal of shipping 6 million PS3s worldwide by March 31, even though reports from Japan have indicated sales of the PS3 have been lagging behind expectation.

The success of the PS3 is still in question, due to a lack of available games and the dominance of the Nintendo Wii's sales figures this holiday season. The PS3 is becoming more important to Sony's bottom line, due to other setbacks in its electronics sector.
