Sony Reveals PlayStation Phone Launch Details

Sony has released official details on the device that is part PlayStation controller, part phone, and revealed when it'll launch.

Early this week, Sony Ericsson finally announced the official details on Xperia Play, a new Android-based smartphone that features full-on gaming controls. It's basically a PlayStation controller mixed with a phone, combined with access to Sony's gaming content.

Xperia Play will be the first "PlayStation Certified" smartphone ever. The idea is to bring the "PlayStation experience" to a phone for the first time, and to change cellphone gaming for the better. Over 50 games will be available at launch, with third-parties working on titles such as Sims 3, Fifa, Dungeon Defenders [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/trailers/2557-Dungeon-Defenders-Huntress-Trailer], Assassin's Creed, and Splinter Cell. Some games will include support for "anytime, anywhere" multiplayer. A PlayStation Network store is planned for launch toward the "end of 2011," according to Sony's Kazuo Hirai.

In addition to the capable gamepad, Xperia Play includes a 5.0 megapixel camera, a 4-inch multi-touch touchscreen, and 400 MB of internal memory with an 8GB microSD memory card for storing all those games. Battery life during gameplay will last up to 5 hours and 35 minutes.

Verizon will be the first carrier to offer the phone in the U.S. in spring 2011. Highlights of Xperia Play's announcement can be watched below. Will it become something special or just a flash in the pan?

Update: Sony Ericsson also says that Xperia Play will come with many games pre-loaded for an "out-of-the-box" gaming experience, including Asphalt, Adrenaline 6, Bruce Lee, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, and Tetris.

I was gonna get this, but I didn't know when it was coming out. Ended up getting a Windows Phone 7 and I'm happy with it so far :)

While I do like the look of this, I can't help thinking about what the battery life will be like. From experience, I've found that games on phones tend to drain the battery really quickly

I also wanted it, but ended up getting a blackberry instead. If this can play games as well as it looks I don't know why you would get the NGP, this is quality portable gaming and a phone. It will most likely be the next phone I buy when this current contract is up.

I for one, am really looking forward to this. I've been heavily considering a smartphone, but today's smartphone market is currently starting to look like the early-80's video game market.

Also, did anyone else find it rather funny that the press in the second linked video were taking pictures of this new phone, with their own phones?

Well, the trigger buttons look nice, but otherwise I can get all the gaming I need from an original Android and a game gripper. Not saying that this is a bad idea, but I don't know about trading up quite yet.

Looks cool and with the android connection could work a treat but I'm not enough of a smart phone/Sony nerd to spend the extraordinary amount they'll probably ask for it.

Well glad to see this is coming to Verizon. Seeing as Verizon is my carrier and I have an upgrade coming up in July I will most certainly be looking at this phone. I gotta think this phone will be superb for any of the multiple emulators available on Android as well as the games designed specifically for the Xperia by third party developers. This looks very promising.

Was looking at Windows Phone 7 myself... wasn't too sure on the whole facebook/contacts setup they have going with it. What are your thoughts?

OT, I wonder if it supports any sort of multi-tasking on the phone. Last thing I'd want half way through a game would be a phone call or msg to take me out of my zone =p

I'd like to know when it's coming out in Canada as I have the Xperia already. I'll just switch my phone plan. But this whole leaving Canada to wait stuff is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't take as long as it does to solidify a deal with Rogers since the Xperia is already with them.

Why is this and PSP2 not the same thing? is it going to be emulating the iphone/ipod touch model?
These are my main questions
