Been thinking about getting a PS3 for a while. Does the controller still have those uncomfortable marshmallow triggers?

Brilliant, now I can buy the damn thing. Can't have a trilogy without 3! (I own a Wii and 360).

Hope it still gets the (alluded to) backwards compatability. Then I'll have no reason to not buy it.

Because the only reason I would consider buying a PS3 is as a *replacement* for my PS2. I don't want to have two systems taking up space. A *huge* part of the reason I bought a PS2 was because of all the PS1 games that would run on it in addition to PS2 games. When there's a choice of a platform that has 10 decent games on it and one that has 70, guess which I'll choose.

When Sony originally announced the PS3, I was excited at the prospect. I thought I'd be able to replace my PS2 and still play all my games. Plus, there would be the added benefit of HD output that could, theoretically, make the old games look marginally better on my HD tv.

I was hugely disappointed when I found out from reviews that PS2 games actually looked *worse* on the PS3 due to anti-aliasing bugs. Then when Sony scrapped BC altogether, I lost interest.

Maybe you're happy spending $300 on a system that does nothing but play current-gen games, but it sounds like a huge waste of money to me.

As to your Halo 2 remark- I think that's one of the strongest selling points of the 360. If it weren't for all the RROD problems, I would have already bought a 360 for precisely that reason. I'm still strongly considering it- just waiting to see if the new chipset really fares any better.
Jesus Christ, do I need to spell this out on a fucking chalkboard for you?

1. If you see no interest in any PS3 games, don't buy a PS3. No one's forcing you to. That said, your disinterest in games like InFamous, LittleBigPlanet, and Disgaea 3 (games I personally consider to be really good) does not entitle you to declare the whole thing as a waste of money. If you really need to replace your PS2, whether it's dying or otherwise, but you only care about PS2 games, here's a better investment: a new PS2. Sony hasn't stopped making them yet.

2. The anti-aliasing bugs were patched. PS2 games now look and run better on a backwards compatible PS3. Odin Sphere, a nearly unplayable game due to excess lag at points, now runs perfectly smooth. I would know; I happen to have a PS3 that is backward compatible. If backward compatibility is what you want, find a used 80GB system, make sure it has 4 USB ports, and it's probably backward compatible. Done.

If you can't find one, and space is REALLY so much of an issue that a slim PS2 + anything else is too much, then you need to readjust your living space so there is room. I mean, I could fit a large PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii all on a table that's not even two feet wide, and still have enough space for cooling reasons. I don't see how just a PS3 slim and a PS2 slim could be that much of an issue.

3. Why the fuck would I buy an Xbox 360 if the only game I wanted was Halo 2 instead of Halo 3? Why not spend $200 less on a model one Xbox? It's not like any of the extra features of the 360 work when playing an Xbox Originals game anyway. Oh, and for the record, the backward compatibility on the 360 is worse.

If you're going to make excuses rather than just go with something like "Meh, the PS3 doesn't interest me," or "PS3 games don't interest me," at least make some decent excuses as opposed to bullshit arguments that were obsolete at least a year ago.

Is there backwards compatability? That's all I want to know. It seems unlikely since it wasn't specifically mentioned.
Why is backwards combatibility such a big issue for every one ? When ever i want to play a PS2 game i just use my PS2 (that was until my PS2 finally took it's toll and died a surprising yet peaceful death)

and my view on the PS3 slim is that it's all slik and mean, I just wish it had that chrome trim the PS3 has.
Easily answered.
Clutter and Aesthetics.

Quite frankly, I'm trying to reduce the amount of junk lying around my home rather than live like some slovenly packrat.
My entertainment system already has enough stuff around it with my wii and 360 and Ps3 and VCR and Cable box and stereo Home theatre system... Anything that I can reduce is appreciated. I recently sold my dvd and cd players. Wanna know why?

BECAUSE EVERYTHING I OWN PLAYS DVDS AND CDS!

There simply is no reason for me to have standalone dvd players or cd players anymore when my xbox or ps3 can easily perform that function. It's the same reason I don't want or need to buy a Blu-ray player... because my PS3 already performs that function.

Why should I have a PS2 and a PS3 sitting up there taking space when one can be easily eliminated by adding it's functionality to the other?

Lucky for me I have a 60 gig ps3, so I've taken my PS2 and stowed it away. The only reason I havent sold it or trashed it is because my PS3 is not 100% compatible and unlike many gamers I still go back and play some of my older games from time to time for fun or nostalgia, for example Dragon Quest VIII which works like hot crossed shyte on the PS3.

Of course the dirty little secret is that there Sony kicked BC to the curb on purpose. Why? So that it can sell you games you already OWN as DLC content.
Why allow you to play your PS2 games on your PS3 when they can sell you "updated" versions for $10 a pop and thus bleed the stone for a few more dollars the second time round.

I'm sorry sir, thats a bold faced lie and you know it. Either that or you're fanboyism has blinded you and having a conversation with you further would be pointless.

I have a 60 gig launch PS3. I also own Odin Sphere. I'm a big fan of Atlas and Vanillaware and jrpgs. And as a lover of the playstation 2 era of RPGS (the greatest era that probably will ever be), I have to honestly and truthfully acknowledge that many of these games run like absolute ASS on the PS3. Sure, some patches seemed to have upscaled these games from truly abhorrent to mildly awful, but in all honesty I don't think Sony has any intention of making these games work flawlessly from their original medium.

Instead they will release a perfectly working, beautifully upscaled DOWNLOADABLE version sometime in the near future. Which is fine, there are still games that I think are hard to find that I'd suggest to people like Atelier Iris or AR Tonelico that are worth playing and if you can get them for $10 instead of the ridiculous prices they go for on feE Bay or scAMAZON then by all means go for it.

But to sit and tell people that all these games work and look beautiful on the PS3 when you know perfectly well that you're lying through your teeth like a used car salesmen isn't honorable.

The sad reality is, as it stands, if you want to play classic PS2 games that you know and love, either hang on to your PS2 or (Sony's preference) sell your old games now while you can for whatever pittance Game Stop will give you, put it onto a pre-paid credit card, and buy those games as they are released as DLC sometime in the future on PSN.

A. the PS3 is completely BC with the PS1
B. the PS3 doesn't SELL any PS2 games on PSN
Nothing wrong with my logic because

A. Nobody is complaining about BC with PSX games, the main beef is with PS2 games which are still close enough to the games in this generation to warrant playing. For example Odin Sphere, which is a PS2 game and still something I'd recommend EVERYONE pick up because it's so damn awesome.

and

B. The PS3 doesn't SELL any PS2 games on PSN... "YET". You forgot that word.
Xbox now sells downloadable Xbox 1 games on Live.
You seriously don't think Sony will quickly follow suit?

I do believe this is a massive waste of time, money and effort. Sony should instead be concentrating on delivering classic PS1 and PS2 titles from the PSN and maintain backwards compatibility on the original PS3.

Looks nicer than the current PS3, the fact that you cant' stack something on it is annoying since it's so bloody massive.

I really don't get it if you thought it was to expensive before fine, but if your complaining about no Backwards Compatibility (Just for PS2 not PS1 games.)now when the original model had it and dropped it to make production costs cheaper along with other(lets face it options you don't really need if they really just want you playing the current generation games on the system.) features like extra USB ports, SD card solts & etc. It seems like you are just looking for something to complain about.

Personally I remember having a NES a Sega Genisis and a Super NES at the same time back in the day and never thought why didn't Nintendo add BC or great I 3 consoles taking up all this space(space long ways no standing on thier sides for them if you wanted them to work without falling over.)

It's like what happened with the PS2/PS1 and Wii/Gamecube full BC is a Critical Deathblow to the older model and Sony my guess thought they could still make a few bucks from people who bought a Xbox360 but kept thier PS2s who could play the same games as the PS3 expect for the ones made for the PS3.

Maybe that's why 360 isn't really 100% compatible. (Or is it? Seriously no clue.)

That has to be the UGLIEST console to come out in at least a decade! I'm glad I just bought a PS3, I was going to wait for the slim but after this, no way.
For every step Sony takes forward it seems like a very small step sideways

Price drop = Yay! Finally!

Slim = Fail. I just don't see why we need it.

I'm still not planning on buying a PS3 any time soon, but when I get a huge-ass HDTV it will definitely be on my short-list of things to buy after. That price does make it more attractive.

EDIT:
Just thought of this; Can anyone imagine the irony if in a month or so we find out the thing has no wireless. Haha, and knowing Sony they'd take out the Blu Ray drive too, so as to switch to all digital distribution. Not trolling, I just think it'd be really funny.
Marketing. Selling old stuff won't be so much of a hit as selling something that is newer, thinner, weighs less. As well as the fact that the hardware has gotten smaller and cheaper so slim is an obvious answer.

Doesn't look as good, but it is far from 'cheap', from my understanding that plastic costs just as much if not more.

Either way, I'm happy, got my HDTV recently and this will go well... will have to import it tho, aussie prices ftl.

I was doubting whereither I was getting the Slim or the regular one, but even though the Slim is ugly, I think I'll buy it anyway. They apperantly only sell 80 GB versions of the PS3 here, and why not go for 40GB extra when it won't cost you extra.

Anyway, seems that Dutch retailers haven't caught up yet with the pricedrop. Haven't seen the Slim advertised anywhere as well. I hope we'll get it on the 1st of september, I can hardly wait!

They can't keep a secret at all can they?

The PS3slim will pick up sales. Especially with the Gundam game bundle in Japan. It looks nice, but since I already have a 360/Wii I still am not completely convinced. I'll wait on the UK pricing. $300 is 300 Euros, which should work out to be £250. £250 being the same price as a PSPgo! Silly pricing or what!
