Sony Signs Deal to Display Half-Naked Swimsuit Models in 3D

Sony is banking on the popularity of bikini-clad women to bring more attention to its 3DTV initiative.

The latest 3D content coming to the PlayStation Network isn't exactly for the hardcore gamer, but it'll likely still get lots of attention. Sony and Sports Illustrated have signed a deal to bring the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue to 3D television in February.

Sports Illustrated has been releasing an annual swimsuit issue featuring various popular models for decades. The 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit video to be released on the PlayStation Network will be the first time the series has taken to 3D.

On February 15, the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue will land in stores, and an accompanying 3D Sports Illustrated Swimsuit video will become available for sale or rent on the PlayStation Network. It'll be accessed through the PlayStation 3 and through certain network-enabled Sony Bravia televisions and Blu-ray players. If you're on the fence about whether or not a 3D video of swimsuit models appeals to you, there will be a three-minute sneak preview available for free.

As part of the partnership between Sony and Sports Illustrated, PS3 users will also be able to buy Sports Illustrated Swimsuit dynamic themes, and 2D Swimsuit video content will additionally be made available. With Sports Illustrated bragging that its Swimsuit issue has 60+ million fans worldwide, this could be a lucrative partnership for Sony, which hopes to get as many 3D televisions into public hands as possible.

Sony might technically be using boobs to popularize 3D here, but boobs are popular, so that's life. All I know is, with barely clothed ladies coming to the PS3 in 3D, it's a good time to not have a young male teenager in the house. Knock before entering.

I see what you did thar.

OT: This kind of has an aura of desperation for Sony. Like maybe people don't want 3D.

Huh.

I didn't know that Sports Illustrated still did the swimsuit issues, as they've been overtaken by easy access to the internet and therefore much bette-I MEAN-"more deplorable" materials.

Decent idea, though. Or INdecent, bam.

If this was Microsoft, people would be spewing hate.

Either way, I have no desire to buy a 3D tv.

If I wasn't already jaded by 3d porn I might find this fascinating...

I think the money spent on the TV would be better spent getting a real Girl to strip down in your living room. A real person will always be better that a 3d facsimile, and there is the added potential for SEX (and not with yourself).

Now let's get this straight, I like boobs. But 3D? Doesn't that just enhance the distance while not giving any of the feedback?

That's more torturous than a selling point.

OMG, Sony is employing a gimmick in order to sell a gimmick.

But honestly, come back and see me when they can figure out how to produce 3D without glasses for a reasonable price.

Have fun spending $150 on the glasses for something that isn't as good as what you get for free on the internet. *wink wink*

The last thing I want is to get a headache while I'm looking at boobs: It could create a serious aversion towards real boobs : >(

Is there someone who is not going to sink this low and buy 3D tv because of sexual figures?
Hell, I ain't buying...
So am I alone along with the militant feminist front who's not going to buy this TV? It went off my "possible purchases"-list now for sure...

To avoid comments where people are calling me gay or insulting me in some other way, I am Asex... Thank you very much... And I have my right to protest against use of beautiful figures only to sell an items and hell I am going to use it... Ps... There is more to womens physical appearance than only sexual context. Sorry about the rant... Just sick of the constant flooding of sex/sexuality from every possible media...

Double D's in 3D? Delightful. And yet also, depressing. I see sony's hoping to make the third dimention the desperate one. Good idea, class things up, make your name synonymous with softcore porn.

Would I stop and look at this? Yes. Would I drop a thousand bucks or more to own it? No.

Can I get a version of the 3 minute preview that lets me rent a 3DTV at no cost for 3 minutes too? Otherwise, pass. Boobs are awesome but not awesome enough to spend thousands of dollars on a new TV when I can just see lots of 3D swimsuit boobs by going to the beach.

As interesting as this is as a sign of Sony's desperation, I don't think it's going to be enough to sell 3DTVs. Too many people have only recently smacked down their dough for HDTVs, and they're not in a hurry to destroy their credit ratings just because someone in marketing is screaming that this is the technology that everyone wants to have (note that's marketing saying that, not research.)

When/if they get around to offering out-and-out pornography, that will probably be either the sign that the tech's time has come or the thing that finally gets units moving.

my favorite thing about sony? "Controversy... pfft, who cares, the worst it will mean is more publicity" not controversy for controversy's sake, but they never let it get in the way!

Considering a lot of news the new techs have been making: Kinect, Move, and 3DTV. This doesn't surprise me.
I like the swimsuit issue much as the next guy, but not sure if this is a direction I'd really want to go with it. Consider what will be put into the video to emphasize the 3D as all media does. If you want more porn to your SI Swimsuit montage, this is what you will want.

That was my thought. If the girl pictured is "half-naked", then I'm in my goddamned birthday suit...and I still have pants on.

Hmm, the cheapest 3DTVs are about £1,000. Or I could go to a local strip club and get 50 lap dances for the same money. Or I could just watch the strip shows, for which they charge each patron £1, and you only get a headache if you drink too many cocktails. Decisions, decisions . .
