Sony Unveils Bat-Tastic Limited Edition Arkham Knight PS4

Sony has revealed a new limited edition Batman-themed PS4 bundle that it will be releasing alongside Batman: Arkham Knight this June.

I'm not usually one for limited edition consoles. Some of that comes from my generally being an early adopter. When the PS4 launched I was zipping over to Best Buy literally minutes after the store texted me with an "it's back in stock" message. More than that though, I just usually can't see much point to them. They're the exact same machine with a different paint job and a higher price tag. Why in the world would I spend extra for something like that?

Leave it to Batman (and Sony) to show me the error of my ways. In an announcement today, Sony unveiled a new limited edition PS4 that it will be launching with Rocksteady's <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/140056-ESRB-Reveals-Why-Batman-Arkham-Knight-is-Rated-M>Batman: Arkham Knight this summer. Built with a snazzy "steel grey" chassis, it will feature custom Arkham Knight artwork and a matching controller. It will also come packaged with a copy of Arkham Knight itself. The whole shebang will cost $449.99. Another more standard bundle is likewise being planned with a $399.99 price tag. That bundle will just include a regular PS4 along with a copy of the game.

I'll waste no time mincing words. I want this limited edition console. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that I now have a better grasp on why people clamor to get these things when they appear. They're just freaking cool. They take something you already enjoy and make it even better. Granted, some of my appreciation is driven by the fact that it's Batman, but I can still definitely say I feel a bit more empathetic (<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138961-20th-Anniversary-PS4s-Rake-in-Thousands-on-eBay>to an extent) toward other limited edition console buyers. Now if only I could actually afford to buy one. Maybe I'll get lucky and Sony will cut the price by $450.

Both PS4 Arkham Knight bundles will release alongside the game itself <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/140189-Batman-Arkham-Knight-Delayed-Again-Gets-New-Gameplay-Video>on June 23rd.

Edit: fixed the horrid there/their combo before the grammar police hauled me away

I don't think it looks that spiffy. It doesn't look bad, and the design is neat. But, the color choice doesn't jive with me. Why is silver the dominant color (or even there) in a color scheme representing a guy know for ninja tactics. That is reminding me of the '95 Batman and Robin suits. It could be much worse, though. *cough* many limited edition xbox 360 designs *cough*

The silver also reminds me of the anniversary PS4 a little too much. I guess this would be a good buy for someone wanting a silver PS4, to match something in their room, that couldn't get an Anniversary Edition PS4.

Still, if I wanted a PS4 with the Dark Knight on it, I might just get a vinyl decal. And, if I want a half silver, half black controller, I'm sure there are places online selling silver controller shells for cheap. Voiding a controller warranty to replace a plastic housing isn't near as bad as doing it to your console.

Curse you, Sony! I already bought special edition Destiny one, because I am sick of everything being black. That's right, I bought a special console with a game I don't even care about simply over a paint job.
But this? Had I known, I may have waited. This looks awesome.

This looks damn good. I'd actually consider getting this. But as of right now, I'm holding out for the Phantom Pain PS4... who knows if that will be released in the US.

If it doesn't, I may end up getting this. That is one sexy color.

So this is how console makers start fishing for whales. Limited edition consoles for every hyped game. I am disappoint.

That controller...

I've been wanting to pick up a second one so I can play local multiplayer and I'd happily make that my new primary controller.

... they're not going to sell it outside this bundle are they? /sigh

I know right? I mean, until they release a Limited Edition PS4 console for either Persona 5 or Kingdom Hearts 3, then I don't see what the big deal is...

OT: But seriously, it looks cool enough that I would not be surprised of one of my friends buys this because he's that into the Arkham games in general...

That is why I hate limited editions and like custom faceplates/ body kits. The original 360 model was pretty neat for having replaceable faceplates. Nintendo pulled a dirty move in NA by making the New 3DS XL, without the changeable faceplates, the only model available.

If they don't release a silver controller separately soon, search for "PS4 controller shell" online. I've found several different sellers of the shells (one on Amazon [http://www.amazon.com/Vktech%C2%AE-Housing-Controller-Polished-Plating/dp/B00QRQVP5K] even is selling shiny gold and silver ones). They are not hard to replace, but probably will void the warranty. You could even make two two-tone controllers (one black on top, the other black on bottom) like the one in this Batman bundle with one shell.

It looks cool, but not as cool as a lot of other Limited Editions. It barely has Batman in it. Unless the controller has a Bat symbol somewhere, then I'm sold.
