TLDR: A third movie and soft reboot game might be in the works.

A couple tidbits-

Now to properly explain this next bit, way back in 2017 Ito was asked if he’d consider joining a reborn Team Silent to work on a new game, and his one stipulation was “If it’s not [a] sequel and I don’t have to use Pyramid Head or can kill him in the opening.” Fast forward to February of this year, and Ito made an inexplicable tweet out of nowhere:

We have a trusted source regarding this news, and another source has corroborated with us that Masahiro Ito (creature designer for the first four titles in the series) is indeed working on a Silent Hill game as previously speculated. These same sources name Sony as the driving force behind bringing the series back.

Keiichiro Toyama (director and writer of the original 1999 Silent Hill) and Akira Yamaoka (composer for the majority of the franchise) are also returning alongside Masahiro Ito. The trio will helm a “soft reboot” of the Silent Hill series, possibly just called Silent Hill. SIE Japan Studio, which possibly includes team members from “Project Siren,” the group behind Siren: Blood Curse for the PlayStation 3, will be behind its development in some capacity (either in full or in part). Our source states that this title has been in the works for about a year. Our second source — which has no connection to the first — was aware of Ito’s involvement in a new Silent Hill title and informed us of that information some time ago.

If true, then this would probably be the game I’ll get a PS5 for. Just thinking about what they could do with haptic feedback and Tempest audio here gives me goosebumps.

I'll believe when I see it. If Sony bought SH from Konami, I will dance with absolute joy.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Really if they just did a proper remake of the first 3 Silent Hill Games, meaning they just worked properly and would run in 4k, that would be good. At this point any new Silent Hill anything will have to prove it deserves, cause I don't think there is any place for Silent Hill anymore. You can't have endless sequels for something that is supposed to be horror and by this point Silent Hill is too well known.

I would love to see a more in depth remake of 4 too. There's a lot of really interesting things going on in that game and I feel like if someone could take a gigantic hot iron to it to get rid of the wrinkles then it could be amazing.

Also, horror sequels being less horrific only works if you understand the horror. With monster or slasher movies it's way easier to lose the horror because the killer is the continual thread between them and so they are always a known quantity. I feel like Silent Hill lends itself better since you can have any kind of monster or horror world and any characters you want and just work from there. There's a lot more room to work in.

I know Yahtzee's said it enough, but it bears repeating: Pyramid Head worked great in the context of the game he first appeared in; everything afterwards was just shoehorning in an icon where he didn't fit. I'm perfectly fine with retiring him.
At most, show the picture in the Silent Hill museum since it's why James's punishment manifested as PH. But that's where it should have ended.

If they tweaked the hell out of the escort quest that was the second half I think I would enjoy it more.

Well, Silent Hill really only works because of the original creator. The problems with the games after 4 is that they were made by teams that probably really liked the original games, but were stuck trying to mimic them and could only create pale imitations. If they got the original creator back or even someone with the clout and imagination of Kojima (I mean PT seemed pretty cool) then they could do it, if they had almost total control.

Don't really expect any out of it but it's nice if Ito is involved and even nicer if they get Yamaoka back.

Konami is swimming in money with it's pachinko and mobile schemes and are only interested in quick returns on investment so that excludes AAA games by default. They haven't released anything in 5(!) years now. MGS Survive doesn't count. Sony paying some kind of licensing fee for the SH moniker could be possible I guess. But it's basically just giving Konami a percentage of the sales and even more free money just to use the IP and I don't think SH is big enough for that. Why not just make an original horror game? Other than Pyramid Head nothing in SH is even iconic. The only consideration then would be brand recognition which, idk, outside a few hardcore nerds I don't think anyone even cares about Silent Hill anymore at this point. The series already lost momentum long ago by having nothing to show for since 2002 other than a selection of mediocre titles. SH lost it's soul with Team Silent disbanded and what followed was mostly well intended but disappointing attempts to replicate that original success.

I can agree with some of those points, but on the other hand if they do reveal this at the PS5 event next month it’ll probably be the highest trending game they show. It’s the devs that will need to make it worthwhile. If it’s at least as good as the recent RE Remakes (which shouldn’t be too difficult as those aren’t even reboots) I don’t see why it wouldn’t be.
